Classic Canadian Rock Songs
« on: April 11, 2008, 12:59:15 am »
I was feeling nostalgic at work after a colleague commented that there had only been "six really good Canadian bands."

A quick round of brainstorming certainly resulted in more than six good bands, nevermind classic songs.

I figured this would be a fun thread to add to. Try to only post one band and their best song at a time. Explanations are optional.  ;D

To start, I'll break my own rule and throw out these nuggets:

Neil Young - Decade, especially "Cinnamon Girl"
Trooper - Hot Shots, particularly "We're Here For A Good Time (Not A Long Time)"

Red Rider - White Hot

Cast out from the jungle
With no rations or canteen
For selling faulty rifles
To the thieves in tanzania

Adventures and misfortune
Nothing wagered, nothing gained
I have wandered through the desert
Found the ocean not the rain

I can remember the nights by the strand in tripoli
We were so much cooler then
I had you and my poetry to protect me
We were so much younger then
I need rain

Dorin wins - two of my favorite songs are Home For a Rest and Summer of '69.

Tom Chochrane - Life Is a Highway.
Steppenwolf - Born to be Wild.
Kim Mitchell - Rockland Wonderland.

And while they might not be "classic" rock yet, I adore Our Lady Peace, Matthew Good, The Arcade Fire, Stars...

At least 2/3 of the original "Oh What a Feeling" Juno awards collection.

In addition to the songs already mentioned:

Kim Mitchell      -    Patio Lanterns
Chilliwack      -   Fly at Night
B.T.O.         -   Takin' Care of Business
The Guess Who      -   American Woman
Burton Cummings      -   Stand Tall
The Payolas      -   Eyes of a Stranger
Crash Test Dummies   -   Superman's Song
Bruce Cockburn      -   If I had a Rocket Launcher
Five Man Electrical Band    -     Signs
Crowbar         -   Oh, What a Feeling (what a rush)

...

And on the list goes.

My uncle has a country place, that no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm, before the motor law
And on sundays I elude the eyes and hop the turbine freight
To far outside the wire, where my white-haired uncle waits.

Jump to the ground
As the turbo slows to cross the borderline
Run like the wind,
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me, an old machine ---
For fifty-odd years
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream

I strip away the old debris, that hides a shining car
A brilliant red barchetta, from a better, vanished time
I fire up the willing engine, responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel, I commit my weekly crime...

Wind in my hair ---
Shifting and drifting ---
Mechanical music ---
Adrenalin surge ---

Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware

Suddenly, ahead of me, across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air-car shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires, to run the deadly race
Go screaming through the valley as another joins the chase

Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man
Laughing out loud
With fear and hope, Ive got a desperate plan

At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded
At the riverside
Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle
At the fireside...

jeez you guys are young; classic rock is the '70"s, not 80's, '90's and above.

45 is young? Thanks!  ;D

You can't put a time limit on classic rock.

Ahem...
Except for Steppenwolf, Rush and maybe Kim Mitchell (within Max Webster, ok), the rest of the bands mentioned don't qualify as classic canadian rock in any way whatsoever, jeez you guys are young; classic rock is the '70"s, not 80's, '90's and above.

::)  That might have been true in 1990, but it's 2008 and the definition of "classic rock" has changed.

Quote
A specific timeline for the classic rock era is debatable. Although some label 1964-1975 the original one (as this was the timeline in which hard rock was dominant on the charts), most, if not all, classic rock stations go well into the early eighties. There is also debate if music beyond the early eighties should be included as some classic rock stations have begun to play music from the early nineties alternative era.

Indeed.  I would consider Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" classic rock.

Spirit of the West - Save This House - Home for a Rest
Great song! Although I prefer "The Crawl" to it. I love early SOTW.

I didn't necessarily mean "classic" in the technical term, so I think any great Canadian song that has or will stand the test of time works.

Gino Vanelli? Someone must be from Montreal... ;)

I had the pleasure of interviewing the late Doug Bennett almost 25 years ago.  He was an absolute pleasure to deal with.

"Real Enough" is my favourite Slugs tune.
