Why can't Nissan drop the Maxima, and revive the Infiniti I35 and make it successful in their line-up?

OR why don't they stop growing the Altima and stepping on their own product's toes.

This generation Altima (2007+) is actually a bit smaller than the last generation (2002-2006).

Thoughts?

Looks awesome!, way better than anything else in this category.  No ressemblance to anything else in the Nissan line, unique and different.  Job well done IMO.

I think the rest of the Nissan line will start to resemble the Maxima soon. Rumours have it that the next 350Z will have the same headlights.

I thought Nissan was going to up-size the Maxima and make it an Avalon competitior.

Seems like they actually shrinked the dimensions, so it is now a more upscale Altima but without the Infiniti badge.

That's exactly what they did:

The new Maxima isn't much different in size than the current generation Altima and is even on the same "D" platform.

I agree that this should have been given an Infiniti badge... but I guess the "Maxima" name is part of Nissan's legacy.

Methinks it'll take some growing on me -- the design at first glance looks almost Infiniti-esque, but then as I look at it more and more I see a real hodge-podge of design. The nose looks like it came from Volvo, the front lights from a design reject on the new Accord and the tail lights simply look like an after-thought. Granted, the interior looks good, but then Nissan had nowhere to go but up in that department, imo. I think, given what this vehicle represents, I'd gravitate more to the Infiniti G or EX for just a bit more cash. That way I could have a true sports-inspired vehicle with rwd.

With the gas prices rising even more, maybe we'll all end up with Smart Cars pulling bicycle trailers.  :o

Front of a truck, tail of a Yaris, steering wheel that looks vaguely Mini-esque.

Saw a new Maxima on Third Line last night. Didn't know they were being sold already. Looked good...the car that is.
The driver?  A 60 year old Grandma.

Had a fully loaded 2002 model. Good car overall but left a bitter taste due do:
1- Depreciation cost is awful. For a car that costs roughly 40K in canada, 4 years later and 80K kms and perfect condition would barely get you 10 to 13k as a trade in....
2- Major rust problem (muffler and gas connector). The only metallic piece being part of the muffler ensemble rusted and caused me to replace an otherwise perfectly OK muffler ($1100). The gas tube (where you hook up the gaz nozzle) rusted and started causing vapor leaks showing up on the main dash board as a check engine code. Dealer wanted to replace the whole thing for $600...Did not do it but was very unhappy with the whole thing. No more Maxima for me.
I do like the outside appearance but Nissan is cutting too many corners...

Maybe on you particular model in 02, I would add the Altima of that year as well.  I will very confidently add that it is no longer the case in 08, Nissan has responded very well to the criticism.  On that note I had the chance to ride in 2 famous brands this week, both 07's, the 2 had some mileage in the 20k.  I was appalled at how badly these cars aged, rattles, squeaks, loose panels.  Nissan has reversed the trend while others are slacking off!

My late MY 07 Camry(the current gen) V6 LE logged 32k miles in its first year and to this day(~38k miles) has nary a squeak or rattle. Then again that's just my car so it might not reflect the current quality level of Camrys in general...
