Golf Clubs
« on: March 10, 2008, 02:13:06 pm »
I am looking at a new set of clubs and was wondering how much negotiating room there is in a set and whether anyone has had luck in getting Golf Town or Nevada Bob's down in price.

I have spent the last two weekends looking at clubs and trying them at Nevada Bob's.

I am going to go for a set of Ping G10 irons 4 thru wedge, a G10 driver, G10 24 degree hybrid, G10 3 wood and a new Ping Pioneer bag. Nevada Bob's has quoted me $1,858 taxes in, that's' probably about $150 of their published list.

What do you think, know any better places in the GTA for price?

Holy crap that's a lot of money for clubs!  No offence.

I'm a big fan of used clubs.  They tend to be cheaper and usually have minimal wear.

Allen's probably a crappy player.   :D ;D

Allen, if you are considering a used set, have you thought of eBay, Craigslist, or kijiji?  Might be worth checking out.  I got my Lady Cobra 7-wood (used) through eBay.  Paid $30 instead of $130 new retail.

You won't get the new club smell with used clubs.  :)

I still have my original Persimmon Woods which I enjoy hitting quite a bit. My old irons I have had for years and will probably last me forever. I have had about 6 new sets of clubs over the years but my level of playing willnever be good enough to justify another new set. Brigitte is correct in having a 7 wood as they are a great club to hit, they have been nicknamed the Heaven wood actually as they can really help you out for the shorter distance hits. I would let my fingers do the walking for prices as there is a big  mark up on clubs and you certainly should be able to find them cheaper elsewhere. Whatever you buy just make sure the shaft is not too stiff for your style of play as you will have trouble hitting them if they are. They will be hit low and tail off to the right if the shafts are too stiff for your game.  :)

Yes that includes the custom club fitting (i.e. wrist to floor, handsize, longest finger measurements, etc) Spent about 5 hours swinging clubs with different shafts, grip sizes and lies on the computer and have them all mapped out... just trying to find a better price at this time, as I really like the clubs over the Calloways I have now..

Personally, I would reward the shop that spent 5 hours fitting you for the clubs instead of shopping around for the best price.

A parallel can be drawn when buying  ski boots.  The last pair I bought took about 3 hours start to finish to make sure I was getting the right pair.  Seeing as comfortable feet will make or break a day, and that ski boots tend to last a while I figured it was worth the effort.  After it was all said and done I bought them at the shop because I felt they were owed something for their time.  That could be just me though.

:iagree: , if the best I can do is only a $100 or so off I will go with Nevada Bob's becuse of the time and effort they put in... also if I find a more significant discount (which I currenlty have a line on) I will give them an opportunity to match it or get within the $100 or so price...  I just don't want to be leaving too much money on the table.. kinda sounds like car negotiating  :)

Allen,

That sounds like a reasonable approach.

And to paraphrase wise words I once heard:

Allen:

Good approach and I agree. I support the local Discount Golf store and this year will match Golf Town pricing. I bought my Wilson Staff clubs there for $500 and added a putter and some specialty clubs over the summer.

I was going to buy anew set as I am completely addicted after my first year this past summer but decided to spend a few hundred on private lessons to break 90 rather than on a new set of clubs. When a set of clubs comes with a 5 stroke saving guarantee…….. I will be all over them. :)

I finally made a decision after many weeks of research and purchased a Cobra L4V F at Discount Gold during lunch.

Do you realize that in about 30 (updated as requested) years, we'll have millions of old ladies running around with tattoos?

PINGS….very nice. I think I will play with my Wilson Pro Staff irons one more year before I take the plunge. I picked up a Titlest 585-H 19 degrees as my rescue utility club last year and it has served me well. Next on the list would be a good set of fairway woods…a Scotty Cameron Red X3 putter…..shoes……new bag……….etc.........etc............. :)
