Toyota builds a Smart, the iQ is going into production
« on: February 13, 2008, 03:45:45 pm »
A Smart-sized car built and serviced by Toyota. This is more like it.

Quote
Toyota is finally getting smart by getting Smart. The Toyota iQ Concept from Frankfurt will show up at the Geneva Motor Show as a fully capable production vehicle that will be a "break-through in compact urban transportation." And by a break-through they mean a Japanese version of the Smart (see the name). The last rumor we heard was that the iQ will be powered by Yamaha motorcycle engine, but powertrain and pricing details are scarce.

Going into production in late 2008.

I thought the Aygo was supposed to serve the same purpose. This is smaller?

By a foot or more, from what I understand.

Love the name.     Love the look even more.  Not a fan of the Smart's styling, but the iQ looks about as classy as you can get from a microcar, if you ask me.  Toyota has really taken a leap in the right direction with their styling lately...

Wow that is hot and the car looks good also!!!

Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach the man to fish and he wakes you up at 5 in the morning.

Let's see...

A "Smart" that...

Won't break every other day.
Looks pretty good.
Was never sold in giant vending machines in Europe.  (http://gadgetopia.com/post/3140 in case you don't know the story)

But...

Will be 30% more expensive in Canada than the US.
Will be equipped with a special Canadian cold weather package consisting of $5000 of nothing really other than $150 block heater.
Will be sold by the only dealers more arrogant than MB dealers.

I have seen many with burnt out bulbs. Does that count as electrical?  ???

Smarts have chronic turbo failures and AC trouble.  Far from Toyota build quality.

It says that it's going to have a Yamaha motorcycle engine in that article. Air cooled? Prolly not, but still don't read anything about bringing it to NA. If that is the case (pun) I guess we won't have the right IQ!

The 600cc unit in my Yam FZ6 puts out 100hp at the crank and red lines at ~14000rpm. The 1000cc in the R1 is somewhere around 160hp or so now. ;D

Of course Canadians will never see it, as we're just poor unarmed Americans with healthcare, and really prefer trucks.

The days of air-cooled motorcycle engines is pretty much over. With a few exceptions, most modern bike engines are liquid cooled.

Once Toyota jumps in, can the rest of them be far behind? This should be an interesting competition in a segment that's long overdue on this continent.

Smarts have chronic turbo failures and AC trouble.  Far from Toyota build quality.

The turbo problems shouldn't crop up in the newer ones as they have 1 liter Mitsu gas engines.
