VOLKSWAGEN ANNOUNCES MSRP REDUCTIONS ON MOST OF ITS 2008 MODELS

AJAX, ON— Volkswagen Canada announced today a reduction of its Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price on most of its 2008 models, ranging from the 2008 Rabbit (up to $700 reduction) to the 2008 Touareg 2 (up to $5,800 reduction). The new prices take effect on Friday, February 15, coinciding with the opening of the 2008 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto.

Price decreases were also announced on some upcoming 2009 models. The 2009 Jetta TDI, which was introduced at the 2008 Montreal Auto Show, last month, benefits from an MSRP that has dropped by $1,200, to $24,275 for the Sedan and $25,675 for the Wagon. The 2009 Jetta Wagon 2.5’s starting price will now be $23,475, which represents $1,500 less than the price announced in Montreal.

“We have been taking great strides to provide Canadian consumers with affordable German-engineered vehicles”, noted John White, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group Canada Inc. “These very significant pricing actions not only demonstrate our commitment to the Canadian market by recognizing the sustained strength of the Canadian dollar, but also continue to reinforce Volkswagen’s message of affordability. We are a brand that, more than ever, offers great value to the Canadian consumer.”

Regardless of whether the price reductions are enough or not, any time they come into play, it's a good thing, imo.

LoLz, my prediction was 1 week after Toyota, it turned out to be 2 weeks.  :)

The real shocker is the reduction on the 2009 TDI models, that are not even here yet.
I doubt if VW would lower the Tiguan prices.

He he, the price reduction on the Rabbit coincidently equals the price increase from MY2007 to MY2008.  ;D

Hey, SAM you sold your GTI at the right timing.

The website is still showing the old prices in the "build your VW" section. I assume this reduction wasn't just spur of the moment. You'd think they'd have their act together better than that and have an update ready to go when the press release went out. ???
Old Jag convertible...one itch I won't have to scratch again.

That's a pretty good price drop on the Tourag 2 V6, very aggresive pricing IMO

The pricing doesn't take effect until Friday, so check later to see more details.
I think the price reduction is only for the vehicles, the packages should stay at previous prices.  :-\

The 3-door GTI is very attractive at $28k...  good to see another automaker taking some action.

If the 0.9% finance stay with the reduced MSRP, it will be time to buy :)

The interest rates shouldn't change for the 2008 models.
When the 2009 models come, they won't be using the same low rates.

I know the Cities are only for Canada, not US but having a stronger currency why not drop a few hundred instead of raising it further?

Price Ratio/Model / New CAD MSRP / US price
(1.29) Rabbit 3-door / $19,975 / $15,490
(1.20) Rabbit 5-door /$20,975 / $17,485
(1.27) New Beetle / $21,975 / $17,365
(1.17) New Beetle Convertible / $26,975 / $23,125
(1.29) Jetta A5 Sedan / $21,975 / $16,990
(1.24) Jetta GLI / $29,975 / $24,230
(1.23) GTI 3-door / $27,975 / $22,730
(1.25) GTI 5-door / $28,975 / $23,230
(1.24) Eos / $35,975 / $28,915
(1.15) Passat Sedan 2.0T / $27,475 / $23, 915
(1.13) Passat Sedan 3.6 4Motion / $42,975 / $37,940
(1.15) Passat Wagon 2.0T / $28,975 / $25,115
(1.14) Passat Wagon 3.6 4Motion / $44,675 / $39,140
(1.14) Touareg 2 V6 / $44,975 / $39,320
(1.22) Touareg 2 V8 / $58,975 / $48,320

The "nominal" difference for the high end vehicles might be high, but the relative ratio is not.

I think they will use the Cities placement in the lineup to keep the prices of the other models elevated. That's what I would do.... oh and I'd also fill my jacuzzi with the extra money.;D
