EVO and STI CDN Pricing
« on: January 18, 2008, 02:54:53 am »
Doubt if it's a repost, but the pricing on these competitors is out on their manufacturers' web sites:

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution:
GSR................$41,498
MR.................$47,498
MR Premium......$51,498

Subaru Impreza WRX STI:
One Trim..........$44,995

Neither one is a 'deal' over the other.  The MR Premium is a tad high though in my opinion.  The mitsu should have started from sub 40 I think to a max of 47/48.   I can't link to the web sites because of the silly first 10 post limit but subaru.ca and lancerevolution.ca.

??? This is not what I expected from Mitsu for pricing and find it hard to believe they would price the MR and MR Premium well above a fully loaded STi.

Evo in GSR trim (meaning, equipped with the five-speed manual) for $32,990 US

OH well

I think given Mitsu's tenuous presence in Canada they missed a golden opportunity here. They didn't have to match the US price. That's not the point. They could have put the GSR at 39,999 (still 7K more than US) and been a sub 40k "supercar" compared to a 45K STi. What a bargain that would look like.

Judging by the numbers it appears the STi is hands down the better buy.  The GSR for a few grand less does not have Navi, BBS rims, heated seats or HIDs.  Looks like STi will out sell the EVO.  I believe the STi will also have better resale since people will believe the Subaru is a more reliable car.  For the price I'd go with the STi.

Disappointed with Mitsu pricing. I guess they are trying to capitalize on the hype. Does anyone know exactlly what MR versus MR Premium is? Navi and Rockford Fosgate for 4K is crazy.

I'm guessing Mitsu's theory was that people have been waiting so long for the EVO that they'll pay anything to get one.  Big mistake, imo.  If they had priced it not far from the US pricing, they would have had an awesome opportunity to sell tonnes of EVOs (it would be competing with the WRX, not the STI), and to be "the first carmaker to recognize the Canadian/US price difference".  Would have been the ad company's wet dream...

Man, that's too bad.  I was hoping for better value.  It'd be nice if the MR came in at the GSR price of $41k.

An MSRP in the high 40s matches up with G37 Coupe Sport with 6-sp manual.  Different cars obviously, but i see a LOT more value in the G.

Looks like the STi will win this round with the Evo in Canada...too bad b/c the Evo sure is a lot prettier.

One theory I developed this morning after seeing the Evo prices is that Mitsu did not anticipate that the Subaru would drop the price by 4K while including the Navi and BBS and they thought that the STi will be around the same price as the outgoing model. This would somehow justify the Evo pricing.

Things may not be that bad for the GSR since optioned with Navi, HID and Rockford Fosgate (if made available in Canada), the price could land in the same ballpark with the STi and they are equivalent with the manual tranny save for the BBS on the STi and Recaro seats on the Evo. Performance wise, the GSR seems to be enough to take on the STi (and beat it according with the car magazines) without needing the suspension/breakes/wheels/tranny upgrades in the MR.

On the other hand, the MR/MR Premium prices are hard to justify.

Certainly, it will be interesting to watch the sales war between the two. As far as I'm concerned, no other car plays a role in this game. Perhaps next model year, after getting hammered over this year pricing and potentially low sales, Mitsu would make the necessary price adjustments.

The Canadian vs. US specs don't match: 295 hp (CA) vs. 291 hp (US). ??? ::).
The Canadian site lists "leather-trimmed seating surfaces" on both GSR and MR. From the interior pictures I've seen (US models) it didn't seem to be leather. Does it come with leather in Canada and not in the US?

Maybe the pricing is wrong too?  ;D What if Mitsu comes back and say "Sorry, it was a typo on our new web site, therefore the correct prices are as follows:
Evo GSR ............... $38,998
Evo MR ................ $44,998
Evo MR Premium ..... $47,998"

I dunno if it comes with leather but it surely has a lager windshield washer reservoir, thicker winterized door seals for Canada to account for the price difference right?  ;D

After a few years of 50k STi's, and many years 50k S2000's, an EVO for $42,000 seems very very reasonable.

When you set the initial price too high, you can give rebates and discounts to attract more sales.
If you set the initial price to low, it will be very hard to charge more during the same model year.

Judging form Mitsus huge +50% increase in sales for 2007, mostly due to Lancer and Outlander.
Mitsu Canada believes the EVO will sellout at this price.

Disappointed with Mitsu pricing. I guess they are trying to capitalize on the hype. Does anyone know exactlly what MR versus MR Premium is? Navi and Rockford Fosgate for 4K is crazy.

Navi/big stereo/sunroof and I think that's it.  Can't remember if you need the premium to get bluetooth and the fast key thing.

$47.5k for the MR is disappointing, but on the flip side, almost exactly the same price as an Audi 3.2 (which you need to buy to get Quattro).  Remember the SST gearbox in the MR is probably a $1500+ item on it's own.

Going by the US spec sheet, the MR Premium should be the MR with the Tech Package, which adds the RF, Navi and Fast key. The BT is standard on the US MR and not available on the GSR  ???. It should’ve been an option at least or part of the package (Sight, Sound and Spoiler). They also left the remote audio controls out of the GSR feature list, which I find it wrong as well.

Sure, if you compare the Evo prices to other performance cars, luxo models though, the price may be acceptable, but the Evo really only competes with the STi and like I said, IMO it's not priced well.
A 2.5K-3K premium for the MR Premium over the STi would've been in order, but $6500 is way too much.

The Outlander sold because it was very, very well priced related to its competition, meaning few thousands less for similar or more features. For 2008MY, Mitsu raised the price by $600-$800, but it's still a very good value.
The Lancer on the other hand, is priced at par with its competition, which I think it's a risky place for Mitsu to be in today.
Now with the Evo price controversy, I don't know...
Only time and sales numbers will tell if Mitsu's strategy to ride the Evo hype wave was good or bad.

If this video is any indication, the EVO X is just a contender instead of a champ.

BTW: In the US, the Evo GSR still undercuts the similarly equipped STI, by about $2K.
