How big is the disk in the Macbook Air?  tiny and slow, only one platter
And importantly, how big is the battery and how long on a charge.  non removable

No ethernet, no optical drive, only one usb

may as well use a Blackberry and do ones real work at home

It's way better than a blackberry come on.  For non-power users this thing is excellent if you travel a lot.

I use my macbook pro as my main machine.  I've only used the dvd drive a handful of times and could have an external for home use (I've never used it on the road).  Only killer is the missing ethernet port but for $30 you can get a USB ethernet car from Apple so that's not a huge thing, at home I always use wireless but on the road I have had to use ethernet cables.

Battery is incredible, 5 hours with Wifi and Bluetooth?  My Pro lasts me 5 hours but that's no wifi or bluetooth with those on it's about 3 - 3.5 hours.

And the harddrive may be slow at 4200 rpm but heck my full sized compaq laptop came standard with a 4200rpm harddrive (which I upgraded once it died off) believe it or not many laptops come with 4200rpm drives, it does save on battery as well.

I think the air is great for the avid traveler, I'd consider if I travelled more.  I find my pro to be perfect though, small enough for travel and powerful enough to be my every day machine.

If it is nonremovable as tpl says, it kind of kicks the "always on the go" person right in the nuts.

Then again its unlikely that this would catch on with serious business users.

Durability is another thing, plus how does the keyboard feel, etc. I wasn't super impressed with the kb on the macbooks I've seen at Futureshop, etc. but I only typed on it for like 10 sec.

And that time capsule thing better double as a NAS. No way am I dedicating 500GB to cover for "oops I deleted the wrong thing!". If it has decent NAS features then its not a bad idea, nice and compact.

I can get 7 hours with Wifi on my tablet.  Pentium M 1.5 GHz, 80 GB 5400 RPM HDD, 1.25 GB of RAM.  It's got everything a normal laptop has except a CD drive, which I never use anyways.

With Wifi off, brightness set to the lowest, and the CPU clocked to a max of 1.0 GHz, I can get 10 hours out of it.

Yeah seriously I've never heard of a laptop that could go 10 hours -- is it a brick? 10lbs?

That's pretty slow though 1.0ghz I struggle with 2.2ghz core 2 duo :P

Its very useful for a person travelling all the time and showing presentations. Looks very nice.  ;D

4200RPM drives are not the norm these days (those do exist in the ultramobile laptops though). You can get one of those SSD equipped laptops even.

Very neat concept though.

And there I was thinking a sub notebook would cost less than a notebook.. Good old Apple ;-)

A sub-notebook is always significantly more expensive than a comparably spec'ed notebook.  It's not an Apple thing.  Making something as small and light as possible required more design work and more expensive components and that doesn't lend itself to selling it for less than the generic version.

I think it looks awesome.  :) Does it run Windows?  ;D

14'1 screen isn't a sub-notebook, usually sub-notebooks are have 12" screens, and good ones cost over $1500 still.

The Time Capsule sounds like just the ticket.   I'll certainly consider it as long as its wireless side will not conflict with my soon to arrive DSL/wireless router from Bell.

I've decided that I want to eliminate as much paper as possible, starting with my newspapers.  I want to buy an "e-ink" device at some point.  These devices can get their data via WiFi.  I currently have electronic and paper subscriptions, electronic for the Gazette and paper for the Globe and Mail.

Having a wireless router as well as backup for my iMac and/or e-reader will be a very useful thing.

The Time Capsule is a wireless router.....

Just plug your DSL modem into the WAN port and it willl work guaranteed :)

My point exactly.  I did this with my old wireless router but it was a dedicated device with no overlap in function with the DSL modem.  In the new scenario with the Time Capsule, I will have two wireless routers.

I need to make sure that the wireless portion of my soon to arrive router will not cause problems.  I'm not at all convinced that I can trust the assurances of the Bell salesman who handled the call who was definite that I can configure the modem from my Mac and be able to turn off various aspects of it.
