Fuel Efficient
Available 2.0L TDI® Clean Diesel offers mid-50s MPG on the highway*, yet it meets some of the strictest environmental standards on the planet. Something to think about during those long pauses between fill-ups.
*EPA estimates. Your mileage may vary

So if it is mid 50 USmpg, that is about 4.28 l/100km, and  people at the TDIclub get better the EPA ratings

Fantastic.  That's much better than I was expecting and very competitive with even cars like the Prius.

Prius is probably better for city driving, but the Jetta probably better on the Hiway

True, if cost-per-mile is all you consider.  I, personally, find the Jetta TDI the more tempting overall package (available manual transmission, more engaging driving experience, huge aftermarket with performance and handling bits), so if it's in the same overall ballpark as the Prius, I'd get the Jetta, city or highway.

I just think it's great that there's a car with great traditional looks inside and out, the capacity to handle like a GTI with only minor modifications, a six-speed stick, and gets fuel economy close to that of a Prius.

There was a blue 2008 Jetta Sportwagen 2.5 at the Ottawa Autoshow dealer's exposition.  :P  The doors were open because I sat in it and didn't even notice that it was a wagon ... and then I looked in the back.  :-X

Returning 21 miles per gallon city and 29 highway, the SportWagen's 2.5-liter five-cylinder delivers fuel economy that's on par with or better than everything but the hybrids.

???  These numbers don't even compete with similarly-powerful four-cylinder midsizers, not to mention compact cars.

Jetta i5:  21 city, 29 highway.
Camry i4: 21 city, 31 highway.
Altima i4: 23 city, 31 highway.
Accord i4: 21 city, 31 highway.

That said, if you're not focused on fuel economy or statistical reliability, I think this would be a fantastic car.

Though could be wrong, I think the article was comparing the SportWagen to compact utes. No doubt many mid-sized sedans with 4's are more efficient.

yes. Most annoying that you can't specify different trims.
I tried the passat wagon as well.  Where is the DSG gearbox?   why the f*** does one have to have the sunroof in a wagon just to get leather seats   grrrrrrrr

I know I am in a minority here but I wish VW would give up trying to sell cheap cars and sell proper middle class euro cars even if they do cost more than the domestic or Asian equivalents.  If the want to sell cheap cars then import some Skodas or SEATs

Yeah, I was pretty annoyed when I couldn't add options beyond side curtain air bags and automatic transmission.

They didn't have it available yesterday morning, because I checked. I wonder why they would only update part of the build. Silly.

On another note, I thought the 2.0T engine was going to be offered on the '09 Wagen? Where did I go wrong??? ???

US is getting 2.0T, don't think we are. Unless they do the GLI Wagen, I figure.

Yeah, is pretty lame that the configurator isn't complete - especially since it's been on sale for nearly a month now. But at least all the pricing is on the pricing page and the colours/trim in the config.

I also would prefer if VW were to firmly position themselves as a shade above the mass-market stuff. Say 2k-5k more for the equiv category vs Honda/Toyota but you get your money's worth (and please replace those 2.0 and 2.5 engines in doing so).

Subaru on the other hand...
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.

Based on VW's reliability history, I'd choose the Sube but thats just me.  I agree that V-Dub should be a notch higher than the Honyota's but why do they make side impact airbags or stability control an option?  You would think with all the marketing they do about their vehicle's safety that  they would make that standard on all of their vehicles!  I think it's a huge an oversight when vehicles like the Legacy wagon or Outback have those as standard and offer more space for about the same price.

Those are rear side airbags, not side curtains. So you could have a total of 8 airbags. But the rear side airbags tend to interfere with outboard child seats so they are an option for a good reason imo. And $450 for stability control is really no big deal. The Legacy wagon is imho significantly more expensive (not in the US mind you, but thats another story), and I somehow doubt that it is bigger inside. Legacy rear seat space is quite an embarrassment.

In conclusion:
-VW does give you 6 airbags standard, optional 8.
-VW gives you a dirt cheap ESP program. Until 2008 this was not even available on the Legacy, outside of the spec B IIRC. It certainly wasn't available with the base 2.5 engine.
-The Legacy has limited interior space, particularly in the back seats.
-The Legacy starts at $3.5k higher than the Jetta wagon. Not chump change in this category.
