For a modern diesel....yea.....

Though the Jetta is quite a few rungs up on the "niceness" factor...

And on the weight scale ...

From the TDI forum
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showpost.php?p=1995616&postcount=1082
Here's a quote from a letter I got from my salesman at VW. Take it for what its worth, but this gent is a professional and he hasn't lied to me yet:

Hi Paul, hope you have had a good week. Mr. B just got back from the Dealer meeting with some updates for us. We are getting 5 new models before year end. Of the Jetta wagon, TDi specifically: August is still the target date and testing has all gone well. VW is claiming the only all state "clean diesel" that will also get a real 55mpg. Mercedes and others do not have an approved 50 state legal car as yet. The delays have been caused by the Germans demand for perfection with this new TDi, and it appears that it worked. There is an update "face -lift" for the Jetta coming, but it will probably not be on this one .
I hope all is well,
J

Again, for what its worth....

Completely false.  The Touareg will use the Audi 3.0 TDI.

And regarding to the 2009 Jetta refreshing mentioned in an article.
My guess is a new front and back light casing and a power bump to the 2.0T (+220HP), expecting that in the new A4 as well.

That's what happened in 2002, 3 years after the 1999 launch, the 1.8T was bumped from 150HP to 180HP.

Looking at a Jetta 2.5 AT highline ~ $30,000
Add $2000 for the TDI engine and $1500 for the wagon ~ $33,500

AT already.
6AT to DSG at most a $300 bump.
