How many hours does this engine go before a rebuild is required? Its a expensive hobby when the rebuild time comes around.  :)

Yup...the best technology the '40s have to offer.  3.7 liters of displacement and a whopping 100 bhp at ~ 2500 rpm.

The engines will usually go 1800 hours before they need to be totally redone...it could be 35 years of flying for me!

A rebuilt engine, done properly, in a "real" engine shop is about the same price as the airplane...$15,000 to $20,000.

On the picture you posted--is it a hangar at the Burlington airpark?  I am taking my lessons there and it looks like one of their private hangars...

It's currently at the Waterloo airport...and I'll keep it at Guelph in a T-hangar.

The new owners at Burlington wanted me to buy a $60,000 hanger + monthly fees on a land lease to house my $20,000 airplane.

I got sick and tired of Burlington's airplanes when I was doing my night rating to the point I committed to buying my own plane or not flying at all.

Do you need to put snow wings on it in winter?   ;D

Okay, I'm done with the silliness (on this thread, anyway  ;)).

What a great passion to have.  I've never been on anything other than a commercial jet, but I was always a window-seater in my frequent-flying days.  There is something magical about looking down at the world from so high up.  It looks like a living map, and I was always amused to find myself thinking, "Oh, right!  There are no actual lines between the provinces and states."

What is the highest altitude permitted for you?

9500' for 1/2 hour without supplemental oxygen on board. Things get silly after that.
BTW, 9500' is really far up in a $1.50

Do you realize that in about 30 (updated as requested) years, we'll have millions of old ladies running around with tattoos?

And you know, that makes sense.  When I visited Denver for the first time on business, I had to stay over a weekend.  I had a Bravada at my disposal (POS), so I took off into the mountains on the Saturday morning.

Once I got past 10,000 feet, I started to feel quite faint and dizzy -- not a good combo when you're driving.  NO ONE had told me that you weren't supposed to do that until you were acclimated to the already mile-high altitude in town.   >:(  I was able to drive back down slowly (hoping that a speeding transport wouldn't hit me from behind).  It was a very scary experience.

Good to know! Is your Cessna IFR certified? Saf, 4K nowadays will not cover the cost of private pilot license, consider spending close to 10K...

Strictly VFR.

Hey Railton...I'm embarrassed to say I didn't understand your shot with the ident you signed your first post to this thread with.

What's your grief with the "$1.50" Bronte neighbour and fellow RX-8 fan?

Hey TG,
Don't be embarassed. There was no "shot" intended. What's your licence start with, YZP right? mine starts with YZC, maybe your's as well. (?) an assumption I made.
Equally, no "grief" with my $1.50 Bronte neighbour and fellow RX-8 fan.
Peace man and sorry if I have offended in any way.

Actually, I believe the limit for flying without supplemental oxygen is 12,500'.

You're only allowed a half hour between 10,000' and 12,500', though. Any longer than a half hour, or any higher than 12,500', and oxygen is required.

EDIT: Oops... double checked, and the upper limit is actually 13,000'.  :-[  Lots of rules to remember...

I'm told that if I had walked up, it would have been less of an issue.  As it was, I was driving (about 40 mph), so maybe I got the reverse bends by moving up in altitude too fast?   ;D  I really don't know, but it wasn't fun.

My vote for quote of the day  :rofl2: :fiver:

Congrats TopGun. A '59-er? Whoa. Indeed ancient by model year standards but nearly appears current judging by the Cessnas I can spot in the sky. Are most I see from decades ago or the majority more current?
