the BlueMotion three cylinder 1.4 liter direct injection turbodiesel. Polo BlueMotion has the ability to achieve 72.4 mpg and is said to be cleaner than a Toyota Prius.

Nice!

If you want the maxim MPG. You have to have them barebones. How many people can live without air con.:)

1.4 TDI Bluemotion Blue Motion 1
VW has played with the gear ratios in the 79bhp 1.4-litre TDI version. This, combined with weight-saving measures and improved aerodynamics, give a car capable of 72.4mpg.

Looks like they make one with air that still does pretty well:

....I chose a Bluemotion2 because of the air-con, and at 104 g CO2 it's still an incredibly 'eco friendly' car. I've driven it for a couple of weeks now, and I absolutely love it - it's so much fun trying to squeeze a few extra MPG out of the trip computer, and my best so far - on a 35 mile mostly motorway run - has been 75 mpg. You might think that you'd have to drive like a saint or a sunday driver to achieve this, but I've been doing 60-70mph and it still performs. If this is the future, then I'm all for it. The car looks different from the usual run of the mill Polo, the silvery mirrors and trims go very well with the grey anthracite colour of mine, and the wheels look great - it's so nice not driving on low profile tyres, I seem to be the only car on the road without them! It positively slips through the air, has a lovely big boot, and is going to save me a fortune. What's not to love about it?

One nice thing about Volkswagens big ambitions about beating Toyota in world wide sales is they'll have to be aggressive at selling all their models over here, not just settle for selling us a few Rabbits and Passats.

More competition for the Fit and Yaris.  Still bigger than a 1980s Civic though.

Actually, the Polo is as big (if not bigger now) than the Golf Mk2 models

The Lupo in the other hand is still tiny for the NA market

Did he say that most time he is in 5 th gear by the time he is at 50 km/hr but the Polo has to be in 3rd?
Aren't you usually in 2nd or 3rd when you are going 50 km/hr ???

I would not think you would be ever higher then 3rd in the city, (under 60km/hr)

I think this polo would bug me too much. I would rather have the normal 1.9 TDi that does 60 odd to the galllon which is perfectly fine, and I wouldn't have to put up with the weird quirks to put it politely. :)

As far as sub-compacts go, the polo is a great little option for sure.

Another one I would love to see coming to North America is the new Fiat 500. Car Magazine gave it their car of the year award. Not too shabby at all.

A "normal"  TDI diesel Polo would be a pleasant 2nd car .... but if Honda put a small turbodiesel into the Fit, keeping the same performance...

It is such a pity that we cannot get any of those cars here except the Prius. A nice simple diesel beats a mobile laptop battery any day IMHO.
