Battery Life
« on: December 07, 2007, 02:04:52 pm »
Just replaced the battery on the Pathfinder, for the second time.  The first one (the OEM I think) lasted 3 years, the second not quite.  On the Mystique, the OEM battery was replaced under warranty, so less than 3 years for that one.

Hopefully this one will be better:

How long do your batteries last (vehicle batteries, not other electronic/personal pleasure devices)?  And I know that there are different factors that impact battery life but I am just wondering.

I have that same Eliminator SpiralCell battery in a 34R size - lasted 19 months and replaced under warranty three weeks ago.  I run a laptop in my car though so it probably sees a bit of deep cycle usage.

I did notice that the alternator strain of charging a bad battery does have a noticeable impact on the engine feel.

bmw battery is going strong ( touch wood) after 4 3/4 years. Nowadays it doesn't get driven every day and I have a BatteryTender (tm) to keep it up.   BMWs have about 3-5 weeks life on a charged battery before the computer, remote control receiver etc etc. drains it. depending on temperature etc etc.

Trainman, I voted 4 years, but it varies.

The bigger problem for batteries where we live is not the cold, but is the heat in the summer. Batteries in the Okanagan generally need to be replaced more than average due to the heat.

I replaced mine last winter on the B2000 at 9 years old, just for preventive maintenance. My experience with my full-sized pickup and my motorcycles have been similar. Always had good luck with batteries, through bitter experience growing up on a farm.

There we replaced batteries all the time. Lousy battery connections, charging systems issues, lights left on, etc meant we did a lot of boosting. I found out later that when a conventional battery goes flat it loses around half it's capacity, so half of a half of a half means it doesn't take long before there is not a lot of battery left.

So on my stuff I keep the battery/ground/starter connections cleaned and greased, put a volt gauge in the dash to make sure charging is ok and install a beeper so I can't forget my headlights on. The batteries last a long time.

For people who can't avoid battery drain the answer seems to be marine/deep cycle batteries. Somewhat more expensive, usually bigger, not quite as powerful if everything goes right but last far longer under adverse conditions.

Around 3 years for a square Crappy Tire Alimon Aluminator. The fackers kept half my money and gave me a new one which I'm still using. If it lasts just over 3 years again then I wont bother with money back and get smth japanese.

My first VW battery lasted 3 years, the second one lasted 6 years.

I had a Panasonic in my Nissan.  It died at year 10 when the alternator blew.

I've only had to replace one battery so far.  The car was my Windstar.  The battery lasted 4 years before dying in grocery store parking lot on the coldest day of the year.  I put in a Motomaster Eliminator series battery, the biggest they could shoehorn in the sucker.

My Sorento's battery is 4 years old and going strong; I had the dealer check it last oil change as it had reached the 4 year mark.  It passed with flying colours and all is well.

My battery is now 5 1/2 years old and I've noticed that it's more sluggish than usual when cold starting.  I'm gonna replace it next oil change as preventative maintenance.  Nobody likes being stranded in -30 weather.

I wonder if that is also part of the issue over here, as when I lived on the coast the batteries seemed to last as long as the car/truck.

Also the Pathfinder battery gets banged around somewhat as well due to the bush driving.

As I expected, all over the map for life.

Neither I nor the previous owner have replaced the battery in my Civic, so it's been going strong for 5 years at least.  I think it's actually the original battery, so depending on build date 7-8 years.  We'll see if that's still true come summer when I go to start it, though...  ;)

It's survived a few decharges, so it's a pretty resilient little bugger, though.  :)
