Sweet. With that 0.8% cost savings I could probably buy a house.

Only in the States.  ;)

I think my brain just exploded.

But it will cost a fortune. :'(

Don't worry, they might have a 1-Series version (with half the usable space, 99.5% of the weight, and 99.2% of the price).

Sweet. With that 0.8% cost savings I could probably buy a house.

I wonder how much the price premium for the diesel?

How incredible it is to see this coming (some day soon?) I'm wondering if they are starting with the power house to have fewer sales and get a grip on the diesel market first.

Personally, I want to see the smaller 325D touring come as it would service more people.

Just import one from the states and you'll save that much.

MSRP 335ci from bmw.ca & bmw.com:
USA: $40,800
CAN: $51,600

If I was a BMW executive, I'd bring the 335d first to generate all sorts of positive press for our new diesel engine, then follow with the 325d a year later.  The 335d will bring people to the showrooms; 90% would drive off with a 325d.  But when reintroducing diesel to North America, particularly with a brand like BMW, it's best to start with a "halo" engine.

^^^^I agree somewhat.  But many diesel owners buy diesels because they (the owners) are thrifty.  The appeal for many (me included) goes away quickly when the car costs $50k+

Seriously, how may "thrifty" people do you know in new BMWs?  Those people re who the Jetta TDI is for.  If BMW wants part of that thrifty people market, the answer is the Mini Clubman, not the 3-Series.

I was talking about diesel owners, not BMW.  And I have a couple of friend's that wish for something in a diesel nicer than their Jettas.  No doubt they'd be all over a BMW diesel if it wasn't $50K.....(I mean...new Jetta diesels aren't exactly real cheap either...but you get the idea..)

Just because one can afford a BMW, does not mean they are not price conscious.  Though I agree, for the most part, that the market for a diesel BMW is going to be different than that for a Golf TDI.  I'm not sure about diesel in a sporty car...  no doubt the torque would be fun, but the engine dynamics would be quite different...

They could get a Touareg R50 with 627 lb-ft of torque at 2000 rpm if it comes to this side of the Pond.

I want a BMW diesel  I have driven many different diesels in Euland and I like the way they perfom
I want the BMW "look and feel"
I want the BMW handling
If there was a 4-motion ( Torsen not Haldex) Diesel Passat or A6 offered in NA I might buy that instead or the new M-B C class sold here in diesel form BUT:
the 335D may not have a manny tranny available when it gets here and for sure A6 and Passat don't either. A 325D would ( does in Euland anyway)

Aren't all 4MOTION branded cars using Haldex?

Or are you wishing for two things (both Diesel and Torsen) here and I am misinterpreting?

Impressive indeed.  Still, as an enthusiast, I think it might take some getting used to not getting to rev out the engine in spirited driving.  All that torque sure would make rocketing out of corners fun though.

427 TQ is just for starters.  Once that car gets chipped, it will be 500TQ plus EASILY.

I think the starter in that BMW makes more TQ than the Miata's engine....  :)

Hey!  It's not a Honda!  Sheesh!  :)

500 ft lbs, eh?  What's the new Duramax diesel put out?  Oh yeah... big numbers don't necessarily mean it's sporting in its feel.... just that it can pull a large hay wagon around the field.

There used to be large tax incentives for getting a diesel company car, same in other countries in Europe, now the tax breaks are much less.  But companies still like them, especially if they pay the fuel bill too...  Even thought the initial cost is always higher than a petrol model, and the fuel is more expensive, they still save money in the long run.

50% of the cars (in the UK) are company cars, so many of the 5's and E-Classes are cheap to run for the owner, but bought by the company.

A diesel Touring edition would be sweet.
Along with an Avant TDi.... wow. Spoiled for choice.

Whoa!  That's it!?

I'll admit to never having bothered to check the price of BMW's top trim models because "they're probably way overpriced anyway", but, that's really quite affordable (never thought I'd ever say this).  Not that I can afford one though.

I mean... a S2000 is that price.  A G37 is that price.  Hell, a sport G35 is getting up there.  Even an Acura TL-S is $48k.  Geeze, the Japanese are getting expensive.  If I were shopping in the $45-50,000 range it'd take some real hard convincing to sway me from the BMW.

Keep in mind that BMWs compare with other luxury brands in base price, but BMWs tend to be very stripped compared to their competitors.  A G37 has leather seating power seats, heated seating, a great sound system, metallic paint, etc standard.  These sorts of things are frequently (pricey) options on BMWs.  When you're comparing identically-equipped Infinitis and BMWs, suddenly the BMWs don't seem so cheap after all.
