* Personally I don't think people cross shop these two cars

I wouldn't think so If you want a BMW and can afford one you get a BMW.

You might be surprised how many people cross-shop STi and BMW... One of the longest tread on iwsti.com dedicated to 08STi/135 cross shoping:

http://www.iwsti.com/forums/2008-sti-discussion/94845-2008-sti-bmw-135-1-series-pricing-sponsored-www-1series-com.html

Personally, I am considering both 08 STi & S-line A3 (maybe S3 if it gets here) as a replacement to my STi.

Same here.  I'm cross shopping the Evo X/new Ralliart (depending on what it turns out to be) with the A3 3.2 and the 135.  I need auto (bah, getting old sucks some times), want fast, and kinda like the AWD options.  Prefer the STi to the new EVO (hatch, subaru, etc.) but need the whiz-bang new gearbox.

vz - surprised you'd look at an A3, it is definitely much softer.  To me it is luxury with some serious driving compromises (Audi) vs all out sports car econo-box (Evo/Sti) vs middle ground that has no AWD and old slushbox (135).  I'm leaning to the Ralliart to save some dough and get a great car with the core features of the new gearbox, decent power, and AWD.

The Evo X is the obvious competitor, I don't know enough about the upcoming S3 to consider it but I do find the 135 surprising since I'm not really a big fan of the 135. It looks really small and awkward, although I'm sure it will be wicked fast with a really nice interior. Also it seems like people either like hatchbacks or hate them so if you like the hatch get the STI if not get the Evo or 135.
I would understand people cross shopping in Europe where they have the hatchback 1 series which I like since it seems to look better balanced then the coupe.
In reality people can cross shop any cars they want.
In a world where the dead are returning to life, the word "trouble" loses much of its meaning.

S3 is AWD and so is A3 S-line; I know, I know, A3 doesn't have a "true" AWD system, but it will do for me. Ideally, I would get AWD A3/S3 with TDI. Hopefully, Audi will bring their diesel models to NA soon (wishful thinking).  Maybe I am getting old, or maybe I am looking forward to getting a pilot license...

If you are prepared to install the Pre-X mods for the Haldex, you can get it funneling power to the rear wheels pretty much all the time.  Even with AWD, the A3 3.2 is the softest car in this bunch.  Not bad at all (possibly what I pick) just a big step down (sport wise) from an STI.  I'd be very surprised if we see an S3, let alone a big TDI A3 in North America in the near future.

Good to know I'm not alone in my crazy list!  ;)

Exactly. For my next car I will indeed cross shop the 135i, STi, and EVO

I just took a look at the new STI on Subaru Canada's website, and couldn't believe what I saw listed as standard equipment: "DVD Player: Front dash integrated with 7" tilt adjustable screen."

WTF!?!  ???

I can sort of see the appeal of a DVD player in your minivan, or maybe in your riced-out Civic wanna-be show car, but who the hell needs or wants one in what's supposed to be a focused, hard core road weapon like the STI?

It would be bad enough if the thing was optional, but to make it standard:P

Is it really a DVD player or just a Navigation unit?

Perhaps there's a typo...?  Can anyone confirm?

Seems real to me. Here's the blurb on the website:

"As entertaining as the drive is in the WRX STI, a front dash integrated DVD entertainment system with 7" tilt adjustable screen and digital sound technologies provides an equally entertaining break when needed."

That's crazy!

But i bet it doesn't work if the car is in any gear, other than neutral.

Secondly, if one buys this type of car, then buy to drive it.  Not to watch Finding Nemo!

Under $40G + GST for a STi will be an awesome price. On par with the U$ pricing.

Clarkson's take on the STi and the Subaru sub-culture. Pretty funny.
