Spied: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI - Car News
Subie’s top-deck rally rocket gets ready to take off.

BY ERIK JOHNSON, PHOTOGRAPHY BY KGP PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE MANUFACTURER

After all the hullabaloo and hoopla surrounding the latest Subaru WRX’s styling, we were beginning to worry about the aesthetic fate of the hottest version, the STI, but it appears our fears were mostly unfounded. In fact, we kind of like the all-matte-black look this tester has—can we get that as an option, Subaru?

These spy shots, captured at and around the Nürburgring, show that the STI will keep its muscular fender flares as it transitions to a hatchback-only model.

The quad exhaust tips; the aggressive, more-tasteful rear wing perched above the rear glass; and the deep front lip all point to the STI’s retaining its rally-bred high-po character as well. This is especially welcome given early indications that the regular WRX has lost some of its hard-core edge.

We expect the 2.5-liter turbocharged-and-intercooled boxer four-cylinder engine to make the jump to at least 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque for this iteration. (The current car already makes 293 horsepower and 290 pound-feet, so it wouldn’t seem to be too lofty a goal.) The STI will hit streets sometime late this year.

Doesn't have that BadAss appearance ... probably a better car all around than the current one, but still prefer its look being more edgy and aggressive. Guess the suits can drive it and doesn't look out of place now.  :)

Quad exhaust pipes on a four cylinder seems like overkill to me.  Can't wait to see how it performs though, especially against the Evo X.

Full Test: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI.  :)

Read: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=123768

From www.edmunds.com/insideline/

2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI 4dr Wagon AWD w/VDC, Nav, Silver BBS (2.5L 4cyl Turbo 6M)
MSRP of Test Vehicle: $39,440 Price It!!

What Works:
Slightly faster and better handling than the old STI; interior space and packaging much more accommodating; wide-track body suits the five-door well.

What Needs Work:
Tuned to run best on hard-to-find 93-octane supreme; diff settings too complicated; despite AWD, you'll want other tires in snow country.

Bottom Line:
Significant changes to the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI have simultaneously given it more performance and more practicality.

From the Edmunds article:

Quote
At least the brakes are more than a match for the acceleration. The only major change to the Brembo system is a 0.3-inch increase in the diameter of the vented front and rear rotors, yet stopping distance improves significantly from the 115 feet we recorded on a 2006 STI to a remarkable 106 feet for this one.

60-0mph in 106 feet is some serious stopping power  :o

New ad campaign - Sunoco94, official gasoline of the STi.

I agree with the comment from C&D - I think it would look awesome in that matte black.

Looks like worth replacement of my STi. The 72mph slalom is great! Faster than Evo IX! And considering that (according to MT comparison test) Evo IX is faster than X, that new STi should be a new king of the rally-inspired compacts.

I don't like the BBS wheels though, it looks way too busy down there.

:iagree: And I'm not really fond of those tailights either. I wish they were red. On a white or silver car you don't see them at all.

Those downsides are really not so bad at all.
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.

Now if it had 'I drive' ;D. It's all about learning and adapting.

In the Wheels section yesterday LeBlanc was lamenting about the CTS not having a sport seat option. Funny thing is he didn't say there was anything wrong with the seats that are there, but in his mind he figures they (sport seats) would be better, but no reason as to why!

Sometimes people condition themselves and make judgements in haste. Gee, I can't think of anyone who would do that here, can you? ;D :o

Yeah, whatever. Its still a rocket with 91, and I am sure you can find 93 or 94 at Sunoco stations, correct?

diff settings too complicated

Read the manual. Most people probably won't touch this feature.

Alot of people put snow tires on anyway. The previous STI needed snow tires too.

You only need to see them when they light up, and I am sure they light up just fine    ;D

I just do not like these types of lights period, it is an ugly phase of automotive design that I hope will go away soon.  My opinion, yours may vary   ;)

That's the stupidest "con" I've ever heard.  If you try and drive a car, AWD or not, in the winter on performance summer radials, you deserve to smash into a telephone pole...  AWD is not a replacement for proper tires, ever.

^ might as well list "winter washer fluid needed for snow country."  ::)

Uhm.... something Subaru needs to work on is the ultra tacky steering wheel.  :P
That front 3/4rd shot seems to make the car look jacked up.

For sure the STI is faster (and IMHO better looking), but 0.8% faster is hardly a great victory.  These are clearly very evenly matched cars that will be wonderful to have available in the CDN market.
