I wonder if there is a difference in suspension tuning between the base and sport model. Seems more like a luxo package as opposed to a sport package.

I pretty sure its the same, but I agree with you.

I have both in 2006 wagon models and I notice a difference in grip, roll, and stiffness.

I'm sure there's still a difference in suspension tuning between the WRX and 2.5i models (as with your '06s), but I believe they're curious about whether there's a difference in suspension setups between 2.5i base and 2.5i Sport.  I'd bet not.

The mash grill on the Australian WRX hatch seems to make a big difference, in a positive way, on the exterior looks.

Regarding the manual transmission (shifter, clutch), how does the quality feel like in this generation?

"But feature-for-feature the 2008 Subaru Impreza more than holds its own with its combination of standard all-wheel drive, side impact and side curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, air conditioning, power group, interior roominess, 16-inch wheels, 170 horsepower engine and impressive fit and finish. And its new look, while understated and somewhat generic, will please most buyers."

One area it wouldn't hold its own is on the fuel economy front, this will be a baby guzzler with a 2.5 liter engine and AWD.  I also get a kick out of our erstwhile reviewer's statement as it relates to its understated and somewhat generic styling.  I'd say that's code for boring so whether it will please most buyers remains to be seen but then we are Canadians!

Not necessarily directly applicable, but from what I recall, the Legacy shifter has been referred to as "agricultural".
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.

Yeah, that's why I'm wondering. I saw a video of the (now previous generation) WRX STI's shifter going through the gears. It sounded kinda unrefined, so I was wondering....

Are we considering a swap into a manual car? :)

I'd like one, yes.  ;D  But, as I don't want to give up the TSX, it will have to wait until other financial priorities are met.  :)

What about you? Ever interest you?

I have wondered about it, actually. A relatively cheap, compact car with good handling. Something I would still have positive equity against with the TSX. Impreza and Mazda 3 would top my list if I went that route.

Basically whatever I swap the TSX for must have some kind of tangible advantage...ie: manual, hatchback, AWD in the scoob.

EDIT:
1. Not really a serious consideration though.
2. A 328i/xi Coupe has plenty of advantages against the TSX, but certainly not positive equity. Patience...

Hmm...... I think, in your case, something like the 328i/xi is definitely the one to wait for. Your patience will pay off. Would you get the manual?

Hard to say for sure right now...if BMW offers M-DCT on the vanilla 3-Series by the time I'm financially able to snag what I want, I will probably go that route. Its a happy medium. My knees aren't in typical 21-year-old shape in the cold, unfortunately.

Also, as an engineer, I appreciate the power transfer efficiency of a clutch more than most, I think. It makes up a fairly large portion of the attractiveness of a non-traditional-automatic. Electronic clutch is just as good as far as that goes. :)

Keep in mind Subarus tend to have more body lean than their competitors, as well as wooden steering.  And if you think your TSX rattles are unbearable, I'd strongly recommend driving a five-year-old Impreza before buying yourself a new one.  Subarus may not rattle when new, but they pick up rattles quickly.

No engine-coolant gauge in the regular Imperezas?

Wow!

I have a 5 year old impeza which I drive the crap out of; the only thing that rattles is my change that I store in the center console cupholder.  Be a while before I drive the crap out of my Legacy's.

My Forester was totally rattle free after two years, and I did a lot of very rough forestry road driving - at speed. It did have a hatch-latch rattle early on, but once repaired there was NO unwanted noise.

really? That seems moronic. I suppose it has an idiot light instead. Of course most modern coolant guages are more like idiot guages with only three or four positions instead of giving an accurate reading.

The 2 Subarus I test drove (Legacy GT and Outback 2.5i) both rattled. Anyways, I guess it's like Acuras/Hondas, you never know when it's going to hit a particular car.

Both of these are in the class I will be considering next year.  Neither will make the shortlist, now that I've seen the pictures.  At least the older models had personality.

I just don't get it.  They have a shot at redesigning a car that, for all intents and purposes, is a fantastic one (albeit a bit homely), and they come up with what looks like a Kia knockoff?  Wow.
