Question for Aviation Buffs
« on: July 05, 2007, 12:40:43 am »
Have a look at my flickr site and try to identify the planes in the picture labeled "Gimli Dragway @ 5 am, Pic 5".  I have no idea what they are.   ???

The silver one in profile is most likely a Boeing DC-3.

Check out this site for a picture:  http://www.boeing.com/history/mdc/dc-3.htm

The other could be a DC-3 from the rear but it looks too slim for one.  Not sure.

I also am thinking a older DC-3 on the Silver one but not sure on the white one.  :)

The nose looks wrong for a DC3, as does the fuselage but hard to tell from the smallesh photo.  Can you post up a bigger one?

Tough to tell about the one from the rear, can not really see enough of it.

The one in profile is definitely not a DC3  look at the shape of the vertical stabilizer...... Douglas made the DC3  Douglas Commercial 3  Boeing did not own Douglas then

Just looking at the left hand plane I thought it had a look of an early post war airliner with that pinched in fuselage and the stabilizer looks familiar. I looked through a whole pile of pictures with no success

Yup, you're right.  The nose is definitely wrong for a DC-3.  However, it took the blown up photo for me to see that.  On the DC-3, the cockpit windshield is notched while the plane in your photo has a windshield that is completely smooth and flush with the nose itself.

Back to the drawing board. sigh.

Maybe a older Convair or Corsair perhaps? Looks a little small to me but its a possibility I believe.   :)

The one in profile could be a Curtiss C46 Commando.

Sheeet!   The gallery I looked at did not have that aircraft, only a couple of Curtis military machines
The second pic is titled "C-46 C-GIBX from First Nations Transportation, c. 2006" so I wonder if it is the actual a/c

Thanks for the help, folks.  I think I'll head over to the airport the next time I'm at the track and get some close-up shots.

I was about to consult one of my WWII aircraft books, but Curtiss C-46 sounds right to me!  Good work, guys!

A plane that size would make a nice get-a-way camper for sure.  :)

Never had to sleep in an aircraft when it's raining now have ya? Let's just say the rain falling softly on thin aluminum skin did not lull me to sleep...

On the Monday morning of the long weekend, we were treated to the spectacle of the Curtiss taking flight.  What a glorious sight and sound.  If what I've read is true, this is one of, maybe, a half dozen left of these planes.
