And more: http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/coupes/112_0806_2008_bmw_135i_test

"While BMW claims the 135i sprints to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, our test machine consistently ripped off 4.7-second runs, easily besting the factory estimate, and buzzed through the quarter mile in 13.3 seconds at 105.6 mph. Under braking, the 135i's six-piston front brakes, and wide, sticky tires haul it to rest from 60 mph in an impressive 102 feet, and the 1's average lateral acceleration checked in at 0.94 g."

Pretty impressive numbers.

Car and Driver claimed 114 feet from 60mph.  That's a big difference.  What gives?

So I couldn't resist.  As I drove past Budds' BMW in Oakville yesterday, the siren song was too strong and I had to stop in.  A pair of 1-series cabrios were doing seemingly constant test-drive duty... a red 135i with M-sport pkg sat right out front of the main doors.  "Funny..." I thought, "those rear tires look to show a bit of wear on them... especially considering it's only been out for a week or two."  A black 128i sat just inside the doors.  I crawled into the backseat of the 128.  Yikes... it's a bit of a contortionist's act getting in and out of that thing.

I took a few minutes of the salesperson's time and we ran some lease numbers.  39mo. lease.  24k/yr kms.  $0 downpayment.  135i with no options -- not even metallic paint.  Its list price is $41k and change.  By comparison, we also ran the numbers on a 328i sedan w/ sport pkg and USB integration (nearly $44k msrp).  Same lease details.  The difference was a 6.9% lease rate on the 1 series versus a 3.9% on the 3-series.  The 1 series came out MUCH costlier despite a pretty close residual (57% for 3 series, 56% for 1 series).

Test drives were offered, but I declined... no time yesterday (and the dealership was busy with people much more likely to buy sooner than me).  A 1-series is not in my future any time soon.  If the rates come down on the '09s, maybe I'll give it a further consideration.

Oh, and about that red 135i out front?  I was told it had already received some Dinan upgrades.  I believe the figures he gave me were 368 hp.  415 ft/lb torque.  No wonder the tires were showing wear already!  Yeeehaw!

***

Just up the street is the local Infiniti dealership.  Despite two strikes against these guys in the past for ignoring me when I've gone in to look at various products, I thought I'd stop in again.  I really want to like the G35.  Strike 3 yesterday.  A number of sales staff present, chatting amongst one another; reception desk staffed by two young ladies; other misc employees about.... NOBODY paid any attention to me as I played in the cars in the showroom, stood around looking forelorn, etc.  Thanks, but no thanks Infiniti.  Once you get your dealerships up to par, maybe I'll consider a G again.  (incidentally, as soon as I entered the BMW dealership, a stunning blonde woman greeted me, asked what I was in for and promptly got me a professional, courteous and knowledgable salesperson).

So how was the leg/head room in the back?  I didn't spend anytime in the back of the 135i I saw as it's not really a concern of mine (I'll be in the driver seat)...but I'm just curious.

Once I was back there it wasn't bad at all.  The seats are deeply scooped, so it's not too bad.  However, I was wearing a hat and found that in the FRONT and rear seat, it kept hitting the roof -- even after I lowered the front seat all the way.  The sunroof on that one really cut into headroom dramatically.

It is really easy to get into the back if the top is down ;D
Can you drop the top by using the key in the door?

The 128 I crawled into wasn't a cabrio... it was a coupe.  Sorry, I should've been more clear.

I'm glad I didn't get the sunroof.  It's optional in Canada, standard in the US.  The 135i I sat in didn't have the sunroof and I didn't have a problem...even without the seats all the way down.
Good to know that the backseat is at least usable (in short stints).  Marley will be pleased  ;)

what I don't understand about the '1' is it's canadian pricing.  The cab in Canada is $6k more than in the US.... our dollar is up.  Do we get more in our base model?

cheers

I'm not sure about the cabrios...but I know we don't get anymore on the 135i coupe.  Our M sport package is a little better compared to the US model (includes anthracite headliner, ///M entry sills, etc.) and we get heated seats included (US gets sunroof instead).

BMW Canada website: "BMW Group Canada is committed to delivering the Ultimate Customer Experience to Canadians through exceptional products and services. As part of this commitment, we ensure that all of our vehicles are equipped and priced to compete directly with other models in the Canadian market. As a result, we are able to maintain exceptionally high residual values and ensure that our customers are protected by the best possible lease rates and resale values for their current and future automobiles."

Basically, they're sticking it to us.   :P

If anyone is interested, I got invited to one in St. Catharines on April 15th....I was going to go solo...but was invited to take a guest.

I'm not sure how intimate this is going to be (with the car silly!)...I thought I heard the sales guy say they were expecting 200 people?!

What time is the event on the 15th?  I live only 15-20 minutes from that dealership and might be interested...

These things usually the car or a couple of them are sitting in the show room and they give you wine and cheese and stuff and you can sit in the car and shmooze.
