Houses in the older parts of Guelph seem to be sold in a week as well...

Hey, you know my philosophy on spending money on cars (AKA modding my leased cobalt, money I'll NEVER get back). So, yeah, I've spend about $1500 on 2.3 years of enjoying 45 extra wheel horsepower (vain?)

The market might be shakey, but the housing market here in Waterloo is not. Money in a house right now is a fantastic investement (talk to Mr. urban planner Dave about NO more land). Also, having family in the industry gives me some decent insight. BUT....

This is a car-enthusiast forum and talking about housing investments here is almost as bad as the endless quibble about trunk space and interior plasic quality....... :rofl2:

Well yes I agree. The housing market is still strong in Waterloo (and Guelph tpl).  It actually seems to follow the trends of the larger markets like Toronto and Vancouver...but on a smaller relative scale.  90% of this is obviously based on the relatively strong economy and growing companies absorbing more and more workers (aka. RIM).  But...Waterloo is in a much shakier situation than those larger markets.  If for example RIM falls on harder times (which is not entirely unconcievable given their gaining competitors and the sensitive user base), this city would feel some bigtime pain.  Already we're losing all of our manufacturing jobs.  RIM's goal has always been to keep most of their manufacturing based on this side of the Pacific.  But as that Cdn Dollar rises....I would bet they change their tune.

But WTF are we talking about.  The title of this thread is "BMW 1 Series" not "Paul & Mike's simplistic and relatively uneducated discussion on markets they know little about"

If I could show this to your wife and watch you be damned into driving a minivan (I hear mazda 5s are a REAL hoot  :D) I would do it in a second.....

Backsplashes, diapers, and fuel economy......full steam ahead (chooooo-choooooo)....

muhahahahahahahahahaha

Hahaha, "backsplashes"....hilarious.

She wants me to get the 3 coupe because it's bigger and sexier.  Backseat space, practicality, and styling be damned!
Mark my word, there will NEVER be a minivan in my driveway as long as there are fun "cross-overs" with 3 rows of seats (a la Mazda CX-9).

Want a family vehicle?  I hear Audi RS4 Avants have good safety ratings and plenty of room for strollers in the back  ;D

The really good trick is to get the Home equity credit line at prime + 0.   Working for one of the big banks for a couple of decades helps.

That really should not be a trick. Anyone with >20% equity should be able to get it. If not, you are getting ripped-off.

Road and Track's full review:

http://www.roadandtrack.com/article.asp?section_id=3&article_id=6590

Highlights:
-"The 135i revs freely to redline, and in testing it hit 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds. The quarter mile was covered in 13.4 sec. at a speed of 104.0 mph."
- "While not in the same league as the M3, this hotted-up version of the 1 Series is best described as an "M2.5." The reduced weight and muscular powertrain deliver at least two-thirds the excitement of the 414-bhp V-8-powered M3 Coupe. So in this respect, the 1 Series does live up to its expectation as a sort of entry-level vehicle into the world of M."
- "The large tires and taut suspension give tremendous grip, enabling the car to pull 0.91g on the skidpad. And in braking, the posted stopping distances are 204 ft. from 80 mph and 114 ft. from 60."
- "The 135i is a driver's car, a "gotta have" car. The question, though, is at what price. The Euro has not been so kind to the dollar and that's reflected in the 135i's base price of $34,900. Throw on a premium package that includes the glove-soft Boston leather and you're in the neighborhood of $39,000. Add navigation and you've zoomed past 40 large, which puts it solidly in the larger and more comfortable 3 Series territory. So the question is — do you want comfort and size, or do you want to drive?"

Stopped by the local BMW shop for a few secs today and saw the first 1Series I have seen in the "real". It was a 135i in that coppery-red color, and had all the bells & whistles, was a coupe and stickered at $48 and change.

Also they had a new Alpine White M3 coupe, which is also the first I have actually seen. No sticker on it. Very sharp and aggressive looking.

Nice..... :) :)

Which one? The 1 Series is for sure smaller than an E46, but the M3 looked about the same size. Not sure I understand your query?

Sorry,
Saw some pictures and the E46 almost look smaller then the 1 series
E46 appeared to sit lower to the ground, but maybe the E46 was lowered already ???

Think I saw the same pix on "1Addicts" site..!!?? And, in those pix, it did appear that the 1 is about the size of the E46, and definitely the 1 sits higher/looks taller. I think the E46 had been lowered, not sure. Definitely, of the two cars I saw, the 1 is smaller than the new M3.

Rates on 1-Series will come down as well, tho probably not to the same extent as the 3er.

The 3 is gorgeous, but something about the 1 gets me. Seems more masculine too  :stick:

The 1 series is roughly 4" shorter in wheel base and 8" shorter in total compared to the e92 M3.  It's a little taller and pretty close in width.  The 1 series is definitely closer to the size on an e46.

I sat in a nice Alpine White 135i last Saturday...o baby...it fits me like a glove.   :)
The interior is equal to that of an e92 in terms of fit and finish, just a little narrower and shorter in the boot.  Rear legroom is pretty minimal...but better than my RSX since the rear seats in the 135i are so deep.

Unfortunately they didn't let me drive it because it was already sold...I'll have to wait for mine  :D

hey aqua    how many pages will it take for you to buy one of these??   :-*

Too small/not versatile enough for me to own, but love them anyway. I'll be envious every time I see one.

Winding Road comparison of the G37 vs 135i: http://magazine.windingroad.com/windingroad/200805web/?folio=66

Interesting comparison. These are US-spec models, and the relative pricing of the 135i (vs 335i/G37) is actually better in Canada.  So the G37 M6 Coupe is acutally a few $k more, even with sport package and leather thrown on top of the 135i base MSRP $41,600.

Summary of their review:  G37 is a "rawer sportscar", whereas the 135i is a little more civilized in the day-to-day driving.

However the 135i is faster.

Can't go wrong with either I'd imagine.
