Didn't see this on any other thread so here it goes.  ;D (apologies if already posted)

BMW 1-series Pricing Announced for U.S.
http://forums.motivemag.com/zerothread?id=3543212

BMW North America has been telling us, since the announcement of a U.S.-bound 1-series, that it won't be "a cheap car" — with the value of that statement hanging on our readers' definition of "cheap."

Well, BMW has announced formal base pricing for the 1-series at Los Angeles, removing all doubt. The 128i coupe, with a 3.0-liter, 230 horsepower I6, starts at $29,375, while the 135i, with the twin-turbo, 300-horsepower six, clocks in at $35,600. This is being brought to you mere minutes after the announcement, and there is no official press release yet, so stay tuned and we'll keep you updated.

BMW'S pricing doesn't seem to be well received by the americans on the board either.  :P

Well...that's the same price as the G37 Coupe 6 speed...a car that was recently hailed as good (or better) than the 335i....So yea, I see the issue...

I like being plural  ;D

And no, it isn't well-received.  I personally can't imagine getting a 1-Series when a G37 is probably still cheaper, comparably equipped (i.e., power seats and leather).

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/11/15/bmw-strike-officially-strike-accidentally-prices-135i-at-35/

Full US price list for the 135i from the LA Auto show.  Gets very pricey, this is disappointing for even the most die hard BMW fans around here (or at least me).

On the otherhand, at least they didn't completely muck up the Mini Clubman pricing http://www.autoblog.com/2007/11/15/mini-prices-clubman-from-20-600-in-the-u-s/

Well those prices actually include the destination charge.  So the listed price for the 135i is actually about $500 cheaper than a 328i Coupe in the US.  So assuming BMW keeps the relative pricing b/w it's models consistent across the border, that would put the 135i's MSRP in the $42-43k range (same as a 328i Coupe).

That's pretty much the price we were expecting all along, no?  Definitely expensive, but considering the 135i comes with lots of goodies (18" wheels, M body kit, N54 obviously), it doesn't seem crrrrazy.

Again, the A3 3.2 is $43k...so what were you expecting it to cost?

Oh, and the comment about options totaling to $50k is BS.  They added every option on that list, even though some are included as part of the ZPP and ZSP packages.

I'd take the sport package ($1k US) and be done with it.

I was thinking they would try and tuck it in just under $40k, like $39.6 or something with the 128 at $34.9k (usual $5k spread for the low to high model).

We'll have to see how these prices to convert before really knowing.  To be clear, same price as a new STI in the US.

I just don't see the fascination with this car.  There are hundreds on the roads here, and none of them look as good as Golf GTi, and a new Elise is cheaper.

Each to their own I suppose...  :)

GTI is FWD.  If you don't mind FWD, I'd say the GTI is a tempting choice (especially considering it's thousands cheaper than a 128i).  But there are some real RWD fanatics out there.  You know who you are ;)

As for the Elise, maybe it's cheaper in Europe.  In the States, at least, the 128i starts in the upper $20s, the 135i starts in the lower $30s, and the Elise starts at $46,000.

I'm very curious why as well.  Never driven a 1-series, but have driven a 3 series.  I might be ending up cross shopping a GTI and a 1-series (along with a Mini and a few others) and the FWD of the GTI is a big negative for me.  Love your thoughts, especially if you've had an opportunity to drive both.

Don't forget Bob, that our 1-series isn't the frumpy-lookin' hatch that you guys have.  It's cartoonishly-proportioned coupe.

The Elise is $60k+ to start (http://www.gentrylane.com/Lotus_Spec_Sheet.pdf) here in Canada.  I'd take a fully tarted-up 335i coupe for that kinda moolah.

A GTI over a 135i?  Geez man, I thought I knew you.

Don't forget that Europe doesn't get the same engines in their 1-Series as we do.  Most importantly, they don't get the twin-turbo 3.0L inline six (the _35i engine that's so widely loved).  Here are their engine choices:

Quote
130i: World's lightest six-cylinder production engine with VALVETRONIC and Bi-VANOS technology achieves zero to 62mph in 6.0 seconds (five-door is 6.1 seconds) and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. Output is 265bhp while peak torque is 315Nm. Combined fuel consumption is 34.0mpg and CO2 emissions are 197g/km.

120i: New four-cylinder engine with High-Precision Direct Injection and Bi-VANOS technology achieves zero to 62mph in 7.7 seconds (7.8 seconds for five-door) before going on to a top speed of 139mph. Output is 170hp (up 20hp) while peak torque is now 210Nm (up 10Nm). Combined fuel consumption is 44.1mpg (improves by 17 per cent), CO2 emissions are 152g/km (down 16 per cent).

118i: New four-cylinder engine with High-Precision Direct Injection and Bi-VANOS technology achieves zero to 62mpg in 8.7 seconds (8.8 seconds for five-door) before going on to a top speed of 130mph. Output is 143hp (up 14hp) while peak torque is now 190Nm (up 10Nm). Combined fuel consumption is 47.9mpg (improves by 24 per cent), CO2 emissions are 140g/km (down 20.5 per cent).

116i (five-door only): Four-cylinder engine with Bi-VANOS achieves zero to 62mph in 10.9 seconds and a top speed of 124mph. Output is 116hp and peak torque is 150Nm. Combined fuel consumption is 37.7mpg and CO2 emissions are 179g/km.

120d: Second generation common-rail diesel engine with aluminium crankcase achieves zero to 62mph in 7.5 seconds (7.6 seconds for five-door) before going on to a top speed of 142mph. Output is 177hp (up 14hp) while peak torque is 350Nm (up 10Nm). Combined fuel consumption is 57.6mpg (improves by 16 per cent) and CO2 emissions are 129g/km (down 15.1 per cent).

118d: Second generation common-rail diesel engine with aluminium crankcase achieves zero to 62mph in 8.9 seconds (9.0 seconds for five door) before going on to a top speed of 130mph. Output is 143hp (up 21 hp) while peak torque is 300Nm (up 20Nm). Combined fuel consumption is 60.1mpg (improves by 19 per cent) and CO2 emissions are 123g/km (down 18 per cent).

http://www.netcarshow.com/bmw/2008-1-series_3-door/

I'm assuming that the 118i and 120i, not the 130i, are priced against the GTI.  So I could see preferring the GTI over them.

I want this engine. Maybe not in a 1 Series, but in general, I want this engine.
