There's always going to be the arguement from the two camps....the cocoon types vs the 'purist' types.....

Roads are a lot more crowded today than they were 50 years ago, so passive safety (strong frames and airbags) is a whole lot more important than is used to be.  Even for sports cars.  All the agility in the world won't save you when some bloke yapping on a cell phone blindsides you with his 5-Series.

I hear what you're saying but what if it's a 7 series, or a Hummer, where do you draw the line?

I have a friend who's Elise was totalled by an SUV, luckily it hit the passenger side and there was no pasenger.  If it had hit the other side he would probably have been a gonner, but does he regret driving a lightweight car just in case he might have a crash, no.

It's horses for courses in this debate, too subjective for everyone to agree, personally I just think the 1 series could be a bit lighter.  The 135i should be for the masses, but they should do a stripped out version for the enthusiasts, like Renault do, and actually charge less for it 'cos it's got less in it! (like renault do)  :)

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

I draw the line at "typical vehicle at typical speeds."  I expect a car meant to be a sporty daily driver (as opposed to a dedicated track toy) to take a side-impact from a midsize sedan or crossover, going, say, 40mph, without mangling the driver who got hit.  That's just a ballpark, but that's what I'm thinking of, because that's the sort of accident you see a lot of in intersections.  Obviously you can't expect every vehicle on the road to be able to absorb the shock of an H2 going 90 mph.  But if a Yaris hits you at 25 mph and your pelvis fractures, there's a problem.

Those who don't care at all, and take a "damn the torpedoes" approach, can always seek out Lotuses, Ariels, or motorcycles.  But most people do care, at least a bit.

So many people I know want a brazillion airbags and traction/stability control on their SUV to be "safe", yet drive around on their Harleys with a beanie helmet, shorts, wife-beater/tank-tops and trainers. (these are DINKs, so the "won't someone please think of the children" line doesn't wash. )

I've come to the conclusion that people are, present company excluded, retarded intelectually challenged.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Back to the topic at hand, here's the UK brochure for the 1 coupe:

http://web.mac.com/ronanw/iWeb/Site%203/BMW%201%20SERIES%20COUPE.html

Of course, the standard equipment/option packages will be quite different hear.  Supposedly, the 135i will come stock with not only the M exterior body kit, 6-piston brakes, etc but also with interior details: short throw shifter, sport wheel, blah, blah..

Did you see the gas mileage of the 123d

Urban 6.5 L/100
Extra Urban 4.4 L/100

Same amount of tq as the 135i

Now only if I had room (and money) for a second car.

I'm disappointed.  I was in Germany for the official launch of the 1 Series, drove the car and thought it was fantastic (120d) hatch.  I wait all this time (3 years) for the 1 Series to come to North America only to find out that its going to be priced out of my reach.

Oh well, stick to Honda's.

At what price did you think it would come to Canada?  $22-28G?  :shake:

Yeah but with this sort of thinking, the "typical" North American vehicle is probably slowly getting bigger all the time.

Also a Lotus has a very dependable crash structure, much more so than most compact cars as it contains a full roll cage.
 :)

Anyway, how many people do you see going through intersections on red at 40mph, I can honestly say I've never seen it?
