House is an appreciating asset, new car is a fast depreciating asset.  Bite the bullet and wait for the car IMHO.

I agree....get into a home before anything else.

That's what I'll do, I'm sure.  In the end in life, I always tend to take the most conservative, safe, practical route, even if I talk otherwise.  Ever wonder how I ended up in a Legacy wagon to begin with? ;)

Safe, practical route?  So you're looking at a sports sedan eh?  Dude....you're getting an Camry.  ;)

P.S. Is the legacy suspension really that bad?  I was considering one in the long-term future...

I'm really not impressed with it.  It tends to pogo after minor ripples in the road (which I don't remember it doing when it was new), and there's a lot of body lean (more than I remember when it was new).  I remember the Legacy GT I test-drove as being much better, though.  The Legacy 2.5i looks the same, but it must be missing some structural reinforcements, anti-roll bars, etc, and the suspension must be cheaper.  I wish we had a Subie dealer/mechanic around here to confirm these things, but that's my suspicion.

However, it may have also taken a beating it wasn't meant to take.  For about 9 months I lived up a washboard dirt road.  Several interior trim pieces worked themselves loose due to that road; maybe it also caused some wear to suspension components.

;D  I draw the line at a Camry.  I nearly bought an Accord instead of the Legacy, but I have a thing against Camries the way ovr50 has a thing against Audis.  Don't try talking me into it; I'm as stubborn as a brick wall when it comes to that car.

A Camry could do 0-60 in 2 seconds and cure cancer while it's doing so, and I'd still be asking myself "Accord, Passat, or Altima?"  ;)

Car payments cut into the mortgage affordability.

Order of importance to me, food on table, roof over the head, clothes on back, ... wheels of desire.  :)

Okay okay I get it, it's going to be 15 years before I get another car, and between student loans and mortgage payments, I'll be in debt until I'm bald.  Jeez, I have that reality in my face for enough of my life, let me indulge in my Jay Leno's garage fantasies while I'm on this forum, k? ;)

Next week I'm going to trade in my Legacy for a C63 AMG.  Seriously  ;D

Just finished a survey for BMW, about 1 series
128I cost will be $32,500 to $38,000
135I cost will be $38,000 to $43,000
and they may bring the cab over

Canadian prices, airb?

Was talking to local BMW store mgr today, and he figures (guessing only as he does not know yet) that a top flight 135i will be into 3 Series price territory.

The survy was with BMW Canada & Ipsos Reid, so I would think it is $CDN.

Guess what I'm trying to say is there will certainly be overlap of prices between the 135i and the # Series generally. The price range on the 3 Series is quite large, from about $36k for a base model 323i to the upper ended 335xi coupes/sedans at a base price over $50k plus extras you will want to have. A FULLY loaded 335 can top $65K.

I think you will see a fully equipped 135i topping $50k in Canada.

IMO there might be a slightly different market segment that BMW is after with the 1 Series - ie. trying to relive their 2002 model glory days and get back the harder-core customer.

I agree with Ovr50 (as usual ;)).  I think $43k for a nicely equipped 135i is a little optimistic.  I mean that's not much more than a loaded mustang GT!  And I know what I'd rather drive by a mile (sorry baby).

But I hope you're right somehow. :D

And Mitlov, I face a similar dilemma to you.  I live in a loft condo right now, but my current plan is to try and get into a house AND new wheels in 2 years time.  Approx. spring '09.  So it's pretty hard to justify taking money away from the mortgage to put towards a car.  But life is short remember.

C'mon BMW Canada, gimme that $43k 135i! Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease  :rofl2:

I think you will see the pricing in line with the information I was given unless there is a big change in the $
I do not think you will see many option on the 1, auto, leather, sport package maybe sunroof

I thought you hated FWD? Or is that my imagination amplifying your distaste...

Maybe the Legacy's suspension is only in your head. Posting on this forum can cause you to think in strange ways.

I went through a period of distaste for it, then I test-drove a Mazda3 and I remembered that suspension and chassis, not the drive wheels, makes the biggest difference in handling in real-world (i.e., not track) driving.  That Mazda3 could run circles around my Legacy.

While a Bimmer or Infiniti is likely out of the question for quite a while, I have from time to time considered trading the Legacy for a slightly-used Mazda3.  It's a cheaper car overall, but it's such a better driver's car than the Legacy it's not even funny.  A slightly-used 2008 Lancer GTS in a couple years is another affordable option.

Sorry for hijacking this thread.

The tangent about my Legacy and possible alternatives/modifications should be directed to this thread:

Now let's go back to talking about the BMW 1-Series.

Get both.  The G8 as the family car, the 135i as the toy.

...what?  Since when are family cars not allowed to be 400hp V8s?   ;D

IMO, no, not much. I didn't open all threads, so can't do an executive summary. Dog days of summer already!!
