I think the design looks wrong, it looks like it's been cobbled together... Not cohesive IMHO.

I think part of why it looks odd are the very horizontal lines and large windows...pretty rare in a modern coupe (which tend to have lines running from higher backs to lower fronts, higher beltlines, and smaller windows).  At first I thought it was just a bit jarring and perhaps dowdy, but after having seen an old 2002 on the way to work, I'm wondering if it's a deliberate nod to that compact two-door Bimmer.

The one line that really doesn't work on the new 1-series is the curved bottom to the door.  Besides that, I'd have to disagree with you--I think it works well together.

If "should" means "whatever would sell best," it should be a hatch in Canada and a coupe in the United States.

The proportions of the coupe are not aesthetically pleasing IMHO. The guy driving the car appears to be 5’-1” tall…freakish.

I agree... as long as it doesn't look anything like that monstrosity they sell across the pond.  :P

The coupe isn't exactly a looker, but at least it's not painful on the eyes. If it drives like a small BMW should, I think I could probably get past the appearance and consider putting one in my driveway.

I'm not holding my breath, though, as from what I've read, the driving dynamics of the European 130i with the M Package are somewhat sub-par.

I will continue to wait for the 3xxD in 2008/9 and if it  doesn't materialize than a 335xi should last me for a few years.  I agree that the 1-series hatch is no looker but I personally just dont see the point of a 2/3 scale 3 series in NA with its big people... the 3 series is not exactly roomy inside. How long will it be before someone discovers that a modern car seat wont fit in it  :o  ;D

Now that a base 3-series weighs, what, 3500 lbs  :o, I can see the appeal of a smaller, lighter, driver's car. Even then, what does the 1-series weigh? Still probably on the wrong side of 3,000 lbs.  :nono:

I'd love to see a 2002 replacement for the 21st century, but not sure if the 1-series is really meant to be that car. Too bad.

Well, it DOES have six-cylinders, four seats, and rear-wheel-drive.  It's not going to compete with a Civic Si in weight.

Let's see.  It might, it might not.  But I've heard much discussion on various blogs about BMW trying to get back to the 2002 with this car.

I don't know what was under the hoods of the BMW's that were racing last Friday night at Sparta race track but they were rather slow in comparison to almost every other vehicle there. I am sure there was at least 3-4 of them and to be such a fine driving machine was disappointing to see how slow they actually were.  :)

The lights are taped off and the trunk look like it has a plastic prosthesis on it.  BMW informants have said that the trunk would have a lip like the M3 ... maybe they're hiding something with all that plastic.

I still think the coupe line is wrong, they have extended the roof too far back for rear headroom.

Also as someone else said, is this really gonna fit the average NA sized buyer?

That's why BMW has the 3, 5 and 7 Series - to fit the bigger NA buyer..... ;D ;D ;D

I would reserve judgement on looks until seen in the flesh.  ;)

Your typical 40-50-year-old Bimmer owner?  No.  But it would fit a 20-something who is considering a 350Z, RX-8, or WRX and could instead get them hooked on Bimmers.  I see it as a gateway drug meant for young, upper-middle-class buyers, and I think it's the right size for that purpose.
