WOW.  Now those are interesting pics!  This is probably the most "off roading" most people will do with such a vehicle.

Intersting that the Santa Fe has a diff. lock button.  While I don't mind slip and grip AWD systems, to not have a diff lock button removes a lot of the benefit of having AWD.

EZgo,

Since you're coming from an AWD Highlander I have a few questions if you don't mind.  Do you find any differences in traction since your SF is only FWD (have you driven it in the snow?)  How about cargo hold, can you cram in about the same amount of stuff in there as your Toyota.  How about fuel economy, similar? Thanks in advance.
Personally I don’t really need AWD and only had it with the Highlander because I wanted the leather package which only came with AWD.  I’ve only had the Santa Fe for a couple of weeks now and it has not snowed much around here, so no real test.  FWD with a good set of winter tires is plenty good and plan on purchasing some for next winter.

The cargo capacity is 3.2 cu. ft. less but last fall I brought home a demo to see if I could fit a couple of mountain bikes upright with front wheels removed like I transported in my Highlander.  It was a little tighter but no problem.  Basically the loss is at the upper rear where the roof line is more slanted in the Santa Fe.

As far a gas mileage goes it’s a new engine being broken in and the weather has been bitterly cold for the last few weeks so I imagine it’s not really great mileage.  To be honest I never bother calculating mileage but it seems to be on par with the Highlander.

I've got the 3.3L with FWD and the stock all season's on it.  Where I am now (Midland, ON), we've got 3 feet of snow and all the roads are snow covered.  I have had zero problems getting around - it feels like I have AWD.  The traction control, ABS, and stability control have all kept it firmly planted and moving right along.  ;D  I may opt for winter tires next year when the All Season's have worn down a little (only 8000km on them now).  As for mileage the best I've gotten is 11L/100km.

I must give credit to Hyundai for keeping the manual option.  It seems the shiftless are winning over the market  :(.  The current XTrail lost the manual option in the interim to the Rogue (no manual), so CUVs / compact SUVs with sticks are scarce.  Jeeps still have it, the Kia Sorrento, Nissan XTerra, base Escape / Tribute, Forester and that's just about it.  The new Vue loses the stick option, as does the Outlander.  Heck, even the new manly-man new GM full size trucks are slushbox-only.  :shake:

The presence of the stick-shift option is enough to make me consider the Sante Fe.  Is that a 180° or what ?  ;)

The more I see the Santa Fe (and I'm seeing them every day) the more I really like the looks of this vehicle.  I parked beside one the other day and the wheel design looked remarkably similar to the Lexus RX.  I don't think that was a coincidence.
Internal combustion thrust I trust

Have you seen the Veracruz yet? It's a real RX wannabe - and just may well be the full-size SUV that the market has been looking for lately with price points rising, and don't forget the new gas-guzzler tax which raises the purchase price even more.

Yeah, the Veracruz is very interesting.   Also, I recently saw pics of the next years full size car offering from Hyundai, it's quite something.    I think Hyundai is on the cusp of real greatness.
