I heard a story (True or not I do not know) that Mazda had 2 teams designing the speed 3.  One team did FWD with all the computers the other did AWD.  The FWD version ended up faster so they went that way.... no idea if this is true but plausible.

FYI, took out my Mazda today even 160hp is too much for the front wheels.

I have a speed3, and all those here speculating about the torque steer need to go drive one.   I have had no situations in the car where "the wheel is nearly ripped from my hands", in fact this car has less torque steer issues then my old Infiniti G20 with 140hp had.  Before getting this car I had not owned a FWD car for 4 years, and still own a RWD wagon in the form of a BMW 540 touring.  If I have a choice of which car to drive I pick Mazda everytime, it is more fun and is guaranteed to put a smile on my face on every drive.

For the price this car is an amazing performance bargin, there is nothing else in the market that offers as much for so little.

G'day folks

Hi Snowman!! Wow- this forum is great. Yes, it is I, the youngin who lives down the highway from you. Hows RutRo? (or its replacement)?

Sudbury is not the automotive central of ontario no, but I call it home and it's good enough for me.

To respond to that last comment- I think possibly the person posting lives in an area with smoother roads than up North here. Because we have a lot of rough spots, in fact, all of the roads are in poor shape, and that didnt help the torque steer one bit.

Right... but I think what Tortoise is saying is that the V50 (also based loosely on the same platform, no?) can manage a turbo 5 cyl AND AWD in roughly the same size pkg... so why can't Mazda cram the 4 banger and AWD?

Thanks Mr. Dwarf

Wonderful car except for the two show stopping bullets:

:iagree:

FWD makes sense for performance cars like a Civic Si or a Mini Cooper S, but the MS3 simply has too much engine for FWD.

In a way I look at the MS3 as modern day Japenese car similar to what the 1989 Mustang GT Cobra was back then.   Relatively cheap, and way too much HP for the car...    The sh!t we used to do in a buddys GT.   Too bad it ended up like half of them out there, wrapped around a lamp post  :o

I live in downtown Toronto, so it is a mixture, some roads are nice and smooth some are crap.  I won't argue that there are not pulls at the wheel while accelerating on rough roads, but will point out that those pulls are not particularily severe or difficult to control, and that they don't take away from the generally enjoyable driving experience.

And as a Mustang owner yourself you know how good it feels to be bad in that car...giddy up.
