deep breath rrocket....you're struggling there...stay with us...Nissan had a recall today you should overjoyed...no?

No...why should I?  Likely a recall based in part from the fear of having a Toyota-esque witch hunt.  As I said...from now on, every car manufacturer is going to do a recall no matter how trivial.

Why...do yo think I dislike Nissan or something??
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

A bigger question is why you have such a chip on your shoulder about Toyota.

Toyota Motor Corp. GM bought back cars from drivers who reported sudden acceleration defects, but the company didn't tell federal regulators about the problem, according to court documents filed in the sprawling litigation against the automaker.

Plaintiffs' lawyers contend the Japanese company American company compelled the owners to sign confidentiality agreements that prevented them from speaking publicly about the issues they encountered.

In some cases dating back to 2006, Toyota's GM's own technicians experienced the vehicles speeding up without pressing the gas pedal, according to the documents filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court.

"The deeper we dig into the facts that surround ToyotaGM, the more damning the evidence that Toyota GM was aware of the issue and failed to act responsibly," plaintiffs' attorney Steve Berman said. "The revelation that they bought up the cars in question and prevented the owners from talking about their experience is curious at best, nefarious at worst."

Toyota A GM spokesperson man Mike Michels denied the allegations, saying company technicians weren't able to duplicate the sudden acceleration claimed by drivers in two instances.

I've been hoping something like this would happen soon!

Toyota readying motors that don't require rare earths

Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda stands next to the Prius V hybrid wagon during its unveiling at the Detroit auto show this week. Toyota engineers are working on a so-called inductive motor that's lighter and more efficient than the magnet-type motor now used in its Prius.

LOS ANGELES (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp., the world's largest seller of hybrid cars and light trucks, is developing an alternative motor for future hybrid and electric cars that doesn't need rare-earth minerals at risk of supply disruptions.

Toyota engineers in Japan and the United States are working on a so-called inductive motor that's lighter and more efficient than the magnet-type motor now used in its Prius, said John Hanson, a company spokesman. Research is at an “advanced stage,” he said, without saying when vehicles with the motors may be sold.

“It's a long-term approach,” said Hanson, who is based at Toyota's U.S. unit in Torrance, Calif. “When you're looking at a geopolitical issue like rare-earth supply, that can lead to developments that create very good solutions.”

The motor could help cut Toyota's dependency on rare-earth materials from China, which controls more than 90 percent of the global market for the metals. China's government cut export quotas for the first half of 2011 by 35 percent last month. That follows a 72 percent reduction in the second half of 2010, causing the price of some of the metals to more than double.

In addition to the Prius, rare-earth minerals such as neodymium and dysprosium are used in motor magnets in Nissan Motor Co.'s all-electric Leaf car, General Motors Co.'s plug-in Volt and Honda Motor Co.'s Insight hybrid, as well as in mobile phones and rechargeable batteries. Toyota confirmed last year it has a task force to find rare-earth supplies outside China.

Battery-powered RAV4

In 2012, Toyota will sell a battery-powered RAV4 compact sport-utility vehicle with an inductive motor supplied by Tesla Motors Inc. that uses no rare-earth minerals. Tesla's all- electric Roadster sports car and future Model S sedan use a similar motor, also without rare-earth materials.

The RAV4 EV motor is separate from Toyota's next-generation electric motor project, Hanson said.

Toyota is developing efficient, cheaper, lighter motors, along with advanced batteries and power electronics, as electric propulsion is essential for next-generation autos, Takeshi Uchiyamada, Toyota's executive vice president for research and product development, said in an interview this week in Detroit. The company is making progress in all three areas, he said, without elaborating.

The automaker revealed this week it's also working on a magnesium-sulfur battery capable of holding twice the energy of lithium-ion cells. Under ideal conditions, such a battery can store 4,000 watt hours/liter of electricity, said Jeffrey Makarewicz, a Toyota battery engineer.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier today that Toyota is developing motors that don't use rare earth minerals.

Toyota recalls 1.7m vehicles globally over 'fuel leak'

Toyota has recalled about 12 million vehicles since September 2009
Japanese car manufacturer Toyota is to recall nearly 1.7 million vehicles worldwide over concerns about a possible fuel leakage.

About 1.2 million models are being recalled in Japan and 421,000 overseas, including 15,500 Avensis and 3,100 Lexus models in the UK.

Japan's transport ministry said slight cracks could appear in fuel pipes which could cause leakages if untreated.

No accidents have been reported because of the flaw, said Toyota.

"Slight cracks may appear on the engine fuel pipes. If [the car] continues to be used, the crack may be widened and there may be risks of fuel leakage," the ministry said in a statement.

There have been 140 reports in Japan of the problem.

Toyota said that some Lexus models would be included in the recall.

Toyota US said it would conduct voluntary recalls of about 245,000 Lexus models. These include GS300/350 models made in 2006 and 2007, IS250s models made between 2006 and early 2009, and Lexus IS350 models produced between 2006 and early 2008.

Toyota recall highlights supply chain issues, says institute chief  (search on logisticsmanager.com)

Toyota’s latest car recalls highlight the difficulties and risks faced by global companies with long and complex supply chains, according to David Noble, chief executive officer at the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply.

The manufacturer is recalling some 19,000 Avensis and Lexus models in the UK  to carry out modifications to their fuel systems. The move is part of a wider international recall campaign for this problem.

Noble said: “As the company’s procurement teams chase round to trace all the affected products and address quality control, they will also be looking to rapidly replace stocks and, in the worst case scenario, look for new suppliers if they can't resolve these issues quickly.

“We very rarely seem to hear about shareholders and analysts interrogating companies about how robustly their supply chains are managed, yet this is one of the most important functions and biggest areas of risk a business has. Toyota’s latest recall should at the very least start to prompt some searching questions and ask why quality is still in question.”

TOKYO - Toyota remains Japan's No. 1 global brand, but its value has fallen by nearly a fifth because of the recent massive recalls that dented consumer trust in the quality of its cars, according to an international consultant.

Seriously, I cannot believe this.  I will be the first to agree that the whole 'unintended acceleration' was blown WAY out of proportion by the media and lacked a lot solid proof behind it, but all of these other recalls and issues have really done a lot of damage to thier rep (and credability).

3 years ago Toyota was in position to become the #1 automaker in the world (which it did).  It had a solid reputation for great quality and reliable cars, albiet boring ones.  Now?  People are almost afraid of them  ???

Have you ever seen a companies public perception do a 180 so fast (Enron excluded?)

5 years ago you would be laughed at if you tried to mention Ford or Hyundais build quality in the same breath as Toyota.  Now they are being mentioned as better quite often.

I honestly believe Hyundai has cracked the nut, but I don't think Ford is anywhere near Toyota.  I bought a 2010 Escape XLT from Enterprise with 23K km on it and it is one crappy vehicle.  Still for sale and I'm willing to deal.  :)

PPL like you MIKE, who have no actual experience with used cars just repeat what you read.  Everybody in the business knows that used Toyotas leave the lot faster than any other brand at a premium.  Today, if Toyota even suspects a problem no matter how small, unrelated to safety, they recall the cars.  The domestics still play the same game as they did before; they wait until they are forced into a recall and only if it relates to safety.  If it's on the mechanical side unrelated to safety they ignore it.

Ford forced into this recall.  Goes unreported because media knows it doesn't play to the "nationalists".  :)

January 27, 2011 - 12:01 am ET

(Reuters) -- Ford Motor Co. is recalling about 525,000 older model Windstar minivans in cold-weather areas because corrosion could cause a separation of parts under the vans that might reduce steering control, company and federal government officials said on Wednesday.

About 425,000 of the Windstars are registered in the United States, about 100,000 in Canada, and fewer than 750 in other countries, Ford said.

"Even with all of its recall troubles, Toyota managed to maintain its second-place brand residual standing behind top brand Subaru for 2011."

Alright, BIG EDIT

I am going to take the high road here, I have scaled back my post.  All I was saying Steve (which you kinda agreed with me in) is that people who only read (which you unjustafiably lumped me into) about cars are very easily swayed by the media.  I can't beleive how quickly the media brought the perception of Toyota for the average Joe from 'the golden child' to the 'evil Acclerating Bastard'.  In the states it was worse, but then again there is some nation pride when your industry almost disappears.  You brought up used cars to refute my new car discussion which confused me a bit, but on further inspection makes sense.  Toyota's cars from 5 years ago (hell, the past 20 years for that matter) are higher quality then most other makes and should fetch a better residual.  Will they still fetch higher residuals in 5 years?  I think so regardless of quality.  Even though many companies have improved thier quality of their vehicles in the past few years, the used car market doesn't U-turn on residuals quickly (unless you put out a real turd then the resale drops like a rock).

Although I obviously don't have the experience you do in the industry, I have been in it and working for it for the past 8 years and know how the basics work.  I also am around the average consumer a lot (who aren't in my dealership looking at my cars) and hear some of the craziest things....but you know the old saying....perception is reality for a lot of people.

And I have rented a few, the 2010 Escape is a turd, but in fairness to Ford, it is also in it's 11th year as a model and a relic from the 'old Ford'.

.....

I don`t dispute that at all AS.  I also think this has a big thing to do with perception as Mike suggested.  Lots of regular consumers just look for Toyotas and Hondas due to their reputation...that drives prices.

Supply must have some to do with that as well.  Gosh, there are lots of Chrysler mini-vans around...not as many Siennas and Odysseys.  Maybe the Toyonda`s are just kept longer.

When I used to be on the dealer's lots day in and day out.... you wouldn't beleive how many times I would here the comment 'Do you have any used Hondas/Toyota's'?   It didn't matter which OEM manufacturer I was at either.  If the salesperson said no, then the customer would just leave (unless the salesperson was really good of course)  :D

Recall when the Secretary of Transportation went on the tube and told Americans to "STOP DRIVING THEIR TOYOTAS" immediately.  Think about that for a second.  Just pure attack politics American style which we all know lowers the bar EVERYWHERE.  Was there another car company that could have withstood that and the subsequent political and media attacks that never let up?  I think not.

From my view point I think Canadian Toyota dealers have been hit harder than American dealers because Toyota Motor USA really came to the rescue with incentives and still are.  Toyota Canada not so much and currently, and probably forever, incentives sell cars.

DI:  Notice the Japanese have not really jumped on the DI wagon?  True, DI motors create more HP/per liter of fuel, but does anyone consider how much these high pressure fuel systems cost when they screw up out of warranty?  Good used vehicles are all about reliability out of warranty and low cost repair for the remaining years of the vehicle.  Fortunately, there are a ton of misguided ppl that buy used cars and guess what they get?  Ironically, the gross in a used domestic is much superior than a Japanese unit by a country mile and I haven't seen any change in this.  The downside is you have so many more duds to deal with and so many sad tales.

" Oh so that used CTS didn't work out so well?  $800. bucks for a fuel pump?  That's outrageous.  Oh and they had trouble taking the tank out and you needed all sorts of other stuff @ 100 bucks an hour because fasteners and lines got torn out in the process.  That's a really tuff break."  ::)

GM said fleet sales dropped 7 percent last month to 39,767 units, with sales to rental fleets down 11 percent during the same period. Sales to commercial customers rose 7 percent for the month, the tenth consecutive month of commercial fleet sales gains.Fleet sales accounted for 22 percent of all GM sales during the month.

Toyota's recall woes take toll on corporate value
05:38 AM

By Chris Woodyard, USA TODAY

Toyota has paid a dear price for its recalls and safety slipups, a new report says.

Toyota has lost value as a result of its problems, says the report from Interbrand, as reported by the Associated Press.Interbrand specializes in ranking brands based on value.

Toyota is the third best-selling automaker in the U.S., not far behind Ford Motor in January, and is Japan's No.1 global brand. But the report says Toyota is now valued at $25.7 billion, down 16% in the past year when its safety trouble was only starting. Toyota's Lexus luxury brand, which placed seventh in 2010, dropped to eighth:

Lexus alone lost 19% of its value, Interbrand said.

Toyota ordered 17 recalls in the U.S. affected millions of cars. The most prominent revolved around trying to keep accelerator pedals from sticking in a way that caused cars to become runaways.

The most prominent revolved around trying to keep accelerator pedals from sticking in a way that caused cars to become runaways.

See how the myth keeps perpetuating itself.  The pedals never caused cars to become runaways.  The drivers did.

BTW edwi, trying reading the page before you repeat the same info.

TOKYO - Toyota remains Japan's No. 1 global brand, but its value has fallen by nearly a fifth because of the recent massive recalls that dented consumer trust in the quality of its cars, according to an international consultant.
