Obsession builds perfection at Lexus

Posted Jul 10th 2007 9:05AM by Frank Filipponio

That "Relentless Pursuit of Perfection" thing isn't just a slogan at Lexus apparently. According to this Automotive News piece, Lexus really means it. Nowhere is it more evident than at the plant where Toyota builds its flagship Lexus LS600h L. Seeing themselves in an arms race of perfection, Lexus has taken perfection to an obsession. The workers are trained and retrained and re-retrained to focus on perfection. And we're not talking about the way a Formula 1 team might rehearse pitstops. We are talking about stuff like building finger strength with special plastic webbing trainers, arranging lip-gloss containers "to develop an eye for tints and color," developing a feel for five instead of six bolts in the hand, learning the sound of a properly torqued bolt. Amazing.

Workers have to go through extensive training, including lectures and computer simulations, in addition to the physical dexterity training. And that training gets tougher and tougher to identify different skill levels. Only 300 current workers at the plant have the highest Level 1 certification. But that doesn't guarantee anything. Every four months the workers have to go through the skills tests all over again. And no matter how good the worker's skills are, there's still that old saying about cleanliness being next to godliness to contend with. Follow the jump to hear more about the whole perfection equation at Lexus.

Signs are posted to remind workers how to dress. Hairnets might make sense in the paintshop, but Lexus even requires them in the engine-assembly plant. Air showers are even used at the engine plant, just like in a semiconductor facility. Although they don't require booties, they do want clean shoes too. Suppliers are even given guidelines that limit dirt and debris from their deliveries. That might seem like overkill in some ways, but the attention pays off apparently.

Besides the focus on workers' cleanliness and training, the finished product is also scrutinized like no other. Lexus tests every single car. When they determined that the previous generation LS deviated up to 50 cm over a 100 m path, they went to work and identified areas of unnecessary variables and streamlined the design. The new one cut that variance in half, and every single LS600 hL that leaves the line is given a white glove road test at 56 mph to see that it meets the new standard. The test driver also checks the other mechanicals and build integrity during a full shakedown run.

Lexus also employs twice as money inspectors as the typical Toyota plant, which is already among the industry leaders. The combination of the best trained workers working in a clean environment, the end product being inspected by skilled human inspectors using the latest in computerized analysis guarantees that these top-of-the-line Lexi are truly world-class. At $100,000, we expect owners of the LS will appreciate this kind of attention to perfection, even if they don't know what is happening behind the scenes along the assembly line.

Toyota slips behind GM in global sales for second quarter
Associated Press

July 20, 2007 at 7:44 AM EDT

TOKYO — Toyota slipped behind General Motors in global sales in the second quarter but retained its lead for the first half of the year, numbers showed Friday, as the two companies jostle for the title of world's biggest auto aker.

The figures — and sales growth rates — indicate that Toyota could overtake GM as the No. 1 auto maker, a title the U.S. giant has held for 76 years. Typically, rankings are determined by full-year production figures, not sales, so that distinction will have to wait until data is tallied for the entire year.

Toyota Motor Corp. said worldwide sales in the April-June quarter totalled 2.37 million vehicles, while GM said its global sales reached 2.41 million, according to preliminary numbers.

In the first quarter, Toyota sold more cars and trucks around the world than GM for the first time ever — 2.35 million vehicles to GM's 2.27 million.

But strong growth at General Motors Corp. in Latin America, Asia and other emerging markets lifted sales by 0.4 per cent in the most recent quarter, again putting it ahead of Toyota.

The Japanese manufacturer said its quarterly sales rose at a much faster rate of 7 per cent. Many analysts expect that Toyota will surpass GM in both sales and production for the full year.

Figures tallying sales for the first six months of the year give Toyota the edge, 4.72 million vehicles sold compared with the 4.67 million for GM.

“Toyota is making a solid move to the top,” said Shigeru Matsumura, an auto analyst with SMBC Friend Securities Co. in Tokyo. “The company's comprehensive strength in the fields of production, technology and sales has been made over a long spell. Its solid footing is stronger than that of GM's.”

The Toyota City-based auto maker has snatched U.S. market share away from Detroit auto makers as the surge in oil prices has increased demand for Toyota's fuel-efficient models, including the Corolla, Camry and hybrid Prius.

A decade ago, GM controlled about a third of the U.S. market while Toyota had barely 8 per cent. Today, GM's share has dwindled to 24 per cent, while Toyota's has climbed to more than 15 per cent, a market share comparable to Ford Motor Co.

But Toyota's success has triggered concern among its executives of a political backlash in the United States. Lawmakers from manufacturing states claim the Japanese government has kept the yen artificially low, giving Japanese auto makers an advantage.

Some U.S. legislators also criticize Toyota for importing nearly half the vehicles it sells in the United States. Last year, Toyota imported 46 per cent of its U.S. sales.

To deflect criticism, Toyota has steadily expanded production capacity in the U.S., in April breaking ground in Tupelo, Mississippi, for its eighth vehicle assembly plant in North America, the fourth in five years. The factory is set to begin production in 2010.

A series of recent recalls has also raised some doubts whether Toyota can maintain quality standards as its global sales expand rapidly. Toyota executives have repeatedly expressed concerns about sliding quality and have promised to strengthen quality controls.

GM, meanwhile, is seeing its biggest sales grow outside the United States. Its sales in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East grew 19.7 per cent during the quarter, while sales in Asia rose 8.2 per cent. Sales in Europe rose 4.7 per cent, while sales in North American fell 7 per cent, the company said.

In the first quarter, Toyota's group global production totalled 2.37 million vehicles, slightly more than GM's 2.34 million. Toyota is set to release second quarter output numbers later this month.

In 2006, Toyota's global production was about 9 million vehicles, while GM and its affiliates produced 9.18 million vehicles worldwide.

Toyota shares rose 20 yen, or 0.27 per cent, to close Friday at 7,560 yen. GM shares fell 62 cents (U.S.), or 1.7 per cent, to $35.38 Thursday.

The year end will define who's the top dog. Quarterly reports are sensational though.

This is an elephant race.

Toyota to resume partial output

Automotive News
July 23, 2007 - 6:30 am

TOKYO (Reuters) -- Toyota Motor Corp. said it would resume work at two-thirds of its car assembly lines in Japan on Tuesday after an earthquake cut off supplies of key components to its factories, and it kept its global sales targets unchanged for 2007.

Auto production at Japanese carmakers has virtually ground to a halt after the country's top supplier of piston rings, Riken Corp., was hit by an earthquake on July 16.

Speaking at its annual mid-year news conference, Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe said today that the automaker would lose about 55,000 units of vehicle output after a complete stoppage at all domestic plants through Monday and at 11 of the 31 assembly lines at its 12 group-wide car factories on Tuesday.

Plans for Wednesday and beyond would be decided on Tuesday.

But Watanabe stressed that shutting down factory production was not alarming under the circumstances, and defended Toyota's famed lean manufacturing method as one of its competitive strengths.

"We will gauge how to make up for the lost production in due time," Watanabe said. "What's important is being able to figure out how swiftly we can fix the problem and return to normal."

Car sales in Japan have declined across the board, but Toyota's domestic factories have been working at full speed to satisfy demand overseas. Toyota exports 60 percent of its Japan-made vehicles.

Watanabe conceded that the domestic market remained tough -- Toyota's sales fell 10 percent in the first half of the year to 826,000 units -- but said he was counting on new car launches and the Tokyo Motor Show in the latter half to jump-start sales.

"We realise that our domestic sales target of 1.72 million units (for 2007) is very challenging, but we've seen some improvement in July and we're not changing our global targets," he said.

Toyota in December set a parent-only sales goal of 8.4 million vehicles for 2007 and 9.34 million units for the group, including Daihatsu Motor Co. and Hino Motors Ltd. Both figures represent a 6 percent rise from 2006.

MARGIN GOAL

Toyota has been boosting its sales volume and profits steadily driven by its popular, fuel-efficient models such as the Camry and Prius sedans.

Management has set a goal of a 10 percent operating profit margin, up from 9.3 percent in the business year ended March 31, and Watanabe said the automaker would keep that target for the mid to longer terms despite intensifying competition, the growing popularity of smaller, cheaper cars and the need to step up spending on developing environmental and safety technologies.

"I think it's a good target that (also) works for the mid to long term," he said.

Toyota already has the highest profit margin among the world's mass-volume carmakers. Domestic rivals Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. had margins of 7.7 percent and 7.4 percent, respectively, last year.

As part of its safety activities, Toyota announced today it would include side airbags and curtain shield airbags as standard equipment on all new passenger cars in future.

Correction to my earlier post (7/18)… The modified plug-in Prius Toyota is going to test drive on public roads will be equipped with the nickel metal hydride battery rather than lithium ion battery as I mentioned.  The test vehicles’ battery pack has the battery-only range of about 13km (vs current Prius’ 8km).  I think the “test” is more a publicity stunt than purely scientific study, since the performance of the automotive use nickel metal hydride battery has been proven in the past 10 years by the Prius.  If the test vehicles are to run on the lithium ion batteries, the situation would be much different.  It looks like even the Toyota/Matsushita (Panasonic) alliance is still not ready for publicly testing this new breed of battery, which is still very expensive and difficult to manage safe recharging.

Since Toyota and Matsushita jointly announced that they would develop automotive use lithium ion batteries, eventually Toyota’s plug-in hybrid automobiles will be running on the li-ion, possibly by the end of 2010.

Charging automotive batteries by household electricity is, I think, makes sense as an “interim” measure to reduce emission of carbon trapped in the fossil fuels.  But in a long run this is not the answer.  You see, much more energy is lost in the process from the well to tire propulsion in electric cars than gas or diesel motivated vehicles.  While you can get 30 to 40 percent of the latent energy of gas or diesel actually converted to mechanical energy, the efficiency of the electric power system from the power plant to, transmission and to stored energy in batteries to the driving motor is pathetic 14 to 20 percent.  You do not want to go back to the age of steam locomotive.   Therefore, the time when the majority of automobiles are running on batteries will not come, besides if, say, 10 million cars in Canada are to be electrified you need many, many more power plants to meet the demand.

For the time being, however, charging automotive batteries during off-peak hours makes sense. The maximum capacity of power plants on the grid is determined to meet the peak demand.  Other times, a good amount of the excess electricity is wasted into the ground to keep the grid system functioning.  You see, the big turbine or hydro generators must be rotating at a precise speed so that they can maintain the frequency and voltage constant.  But, those heavy machineries cannot respond quickly to ever-varying demand.  Therefore, hydro companies discharges a good amount of electricity into the ground to stabilize demand (load). If this wasted energy is used to charge batteries, you are actually saving energy.

By the way, this waste of electricity means hydro companies are actually paying to those micro generator operators (wind, solar, stream etc.) for the energy they throw away into the ground most of the time.  Their energy is used for good cause only when the demand exceed the capacity of the big power plants.

Signs are posted to remind workers how to dress. Hairnets might make sense in the paintshop, but Lexus even requires them in the engine-assembly plant. My next door neighbour, who works for Toyota, said that when he was assigned to build Lexus cars at the plant, it was 10 times harder than building the Toyotas he used to. He says it's very tough, because they expect "perfection." Every single mm is scrutinized.

When I was at the Lexus dealer, I noticed how everything seemed perfect fitted. I apparently have laser eyes, according to some people who know me (one of the reasons I was on the road to becoming a radiologist before I switched specialities - but that's another matter - anyways, I love to scrutinize those things. Law Firm of Sheldon J. Schlesinger, P.A. Announces Class Action Lawsuit Against Lexus U.S.A. Inc., Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc., and Others, Claiming Lexus Front Passenger Airbags Are Defective
The Suit Claims Lexus Has Refused to Correct Problems with Airbag Sensor beneath Front Passenger Seats in 2007 ES350 Automobiles

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The law firm of Sheldon J. Schlesinger, P.A. has filed a class action suit against Lexus U.S.A. Inc., Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc., and others, claiming that Lexus failed to correct problems with the front passenger air bag system in thousands of 2007 Lexus ES350 automobiles.

The attorney who filed the lawsuit, Scott P. Schlesinger, said today he filed the suit in Broward County Circuit Court last week on behalf of Arnold Rosen of Boca Raton and a number of other Lexus ES350 owners. The suit claims that the sensor under the front passenger seat of all ES350s does not work properly in some situations, and may fail to trigger the right front airbag in the event of a collision.

The suit further alleges that Lexus has refused to correct the problem. “The defendants have indicated that they do not have a solution for the defect,” the suit said.

“By equipping their vehicles with the defective airbag occupant classification sensor systems, defendants have breached their expressed and implied warranties in violation of Florida law,” Schlesinger said in his suit. “The defendants continue to sell and lease the defective vehicles despite their awareness of the defect and the dangers posed by that defect.”

Involved are “tens of thousands of vehicles manufactured by the defendants, which are leased and sold throughout Florida and come equipped with dangerous and defective airbag systems,” the suit claims.

At issue is the ES350’s airbag system, and specifically the systems’ airbag occupant classification sensor.

“All of the defective vehicles are equipped with a weight sensor system beneath the front passenger seat,” according to the suit. “The purpose of the sensor is to gauge the weight of the person in that seat.”

When the sensor detects the presence of a passenger, the suit claims, it arms the passenger airbag. But the suit alleges the ES350’s sensors are defective and often do not detect the presence of a passenger.

Arnold Rosen, the suit’s class representative, leases two of the 2007 ES350s, and both contain airbag systems that do not register the presence of passengers, according to the suit. At one point, Rosen’s Lexus dealer took one of his cars in for service and inspection, and gave him another ES350 to drive. That car, too, had an airbag system that failed to recognize the presence of right front passengers.

The suit also claims that ES350 owners from around the country have complained about the airbag system, and some of them have filed complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A number of those complaints were included as exhibits in the suit.

The suit wants Lexus to re-call and re-purchase the ES350s at their full cost; wants full refunds for those people who have leased their vehicles; wants the cars re-fitted with functioning airbag systems; and also asked for compensatory damages for all costs and loss of value.

Besides Lexus and Toyota, defendants include J.M. Auto Inc., doing business as J.M. Lexus; Southeast Toyota Distributors LLC; and J.M. Family Enterprises.

Toyota's quarter profit jumps record 32 percent

Yuri Kageyama / Associated Press

TOKYO -- Toyota, on track to overtake General Motors as the world's biggest automaker this year, said Friday its April-June profit jumped 32.3 percent to a record high for a quarter, lifted by strong overseas sales and a weaker yen.

Surging gas prices have proved a big plus for the Japanese automaker, as drivers flock to Toyota's fuel-efficient models, including the Camry, the best-selling model in the U.S., and the Prius gas-electric hybrid.

"The results are fantastic," said Tsuyoshi Mochimaru, auto analyst with Lehman Brothers in Japan.

Foreign sales are going strong, and the weak yen, which raises the value of overseas earnings when converted into yen, is making rosy earnings even rosier as Toyota's exports grow, Mochimaru said.

Group net profit at Toyota, which also makes the Lexus luxury model and compact Corolla, totaled 491.54 billion yen ($4.1 billion) for the quarter through June, up from 371.50 billion yen the same period the previous year.

Quarterly sales rose 15.7 percent on year to a record 6.523 trillion yen, or $54.7 billion. At current exchange rates, that's more than General Motors Corp.'s record quarterly sales of $54.5 billion, which the Detroit automaker marked in the second quarter of 2006.

But Toyota kept what some analysts say is a conservative forecast for the full fiscal year through March 2008, projecting net profit to inch up just 0.4 percent to 1.65 trillion yen ($13.85 billion) on sales of 25 trillion yen ($209.78 billion).

It also kept its vehicle sales target for the full fiscal year the same at 8.89 million vehicles.

"We posted substantial increases in both revenue and profit, our highest ever quarterly results," said Toyota Senior Managing Director Takeshi Suzuki.

Toyota has already surpassed General Motors in global vehicle sales for the first half of the calendar year, selling 4.72 million vehicle to GM's 4.67 million. Many analysts believe Toyota will likely beat GM for the full year in both sales and production.

The title of world's biggest automaker -- which GM has held for 76 years -- typically is determined by annual global vehicle production numbers. For the first six months of the year, Toyota and its group companies made 4.71 million vehicles worldwide, while GM estimates that it made 4.75 million vehicles during the period.

For the calendar year, Toyota is projecting global sales of 9.34 million vehicles. GM does not give full-year projections, but sold about 9.1 million vehicles in 2006.

GM, meanwhile, has been battling back from losing money in recent years.

Earlier this week, the Detroit-based company reported its third straight quarter of black ink, earning $891 million on the back of strenuous restructuring efforts.

Toyota said sluggish domestic vehicle sales were offset by greater demand in North America, Europe and the rest of Asia.

But even in Japan, operating profit improved because of solid demand for the Lexus, a model that brings in more profit per car than cheaper models, it said.

In North America, a market that's proving tough recently, Toyota sold 762,000 vehicles in the April-June period, an increase of 15,000 vehicles from the same period the previous year, on the successful launch of the Tundra truck and Lexus LS.

The yen's relative weakness against the dollar added 100 billion yen ($839.1 million) to Toyota's bottom line.

Cost reduction efforts offset the damage from higher costs of raw materials, the company said.

Like other Japanese automakers, Toyota was hurt by a temporary closure of a key parts maker in northwestern Japan, which was hit by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake that killed 11 people last month. But Toyota says it can make up for the production loss by the end of the year.

Toyota shares inched up 0.1 percent to 7,080 yen ($59.41). The results were announced shortly before the market closed.

Toyota first quarter jumps on sales rise, yen; keeps forecast

Reuters |
August 3, 2007

TOKYO (Reuters) -- Toyota Motor Corp.'s quarterly operating profit rose by a better-than-expected 32 percent as brisk European and North American sales combined with a softer yen to make up for chronic weakness in domestic demand.

Toyota, the world's biggest and most profitable automaker, left its cautious annual forecasts unchanged as expected.

The Japanese firm, valued at $215 billion -- more than 10 times the market capitalization of U.S. rival General Motors -- is on its way to a seventh straight year of record earnings, powered by a rapid expansion into developing markets such as China and Russia.

It is also cranking up market share in mature regions such as North America and Europe with the Prius hybrid, RAV4 crossover and other fuel-efficient cars.

The carmaker said forex gains contributed 100 billion yen to its quarterly profit growth.

"The weak yen seems to have made a considerable boost to its earnings. The outlook is a bit uncertain given that the yen is on an uptrend and car sales in the United States are being impacted by high gasoline prices," said Kiyoshi Yamanaka, portfolio manager at T&D Asset Management.

Its sales drive helped the Toyota group, which includes Daihatsu Motor Co. and truck maker Hino Motors Ltd., end GM's 75-year reign as the world's biggest automaker in 2006. It outsold the struggling Detroit behemoth by 128,000 units last year, according to Automotive News Data Center.

Toyota's lean operations and cost-cutting savvy have enabled it to absorb a stubborn rise in commodity prices.

Although it spends heavily to develop next-generation environmental and safety technologies, Toyota has the highest operating margin in the global auto industry at nearly 10 percent of sales.

Toyota's operating profit for the April-June first quarter was 675.43 billion yen ($5.67 billion), up 32 percent and ahead of a consensus estimate of 612.4 billion yen in a poll of six brokerages by Reuters Estimates.

Net profit also soared 32 percent to 491.54 billion yen while revenue grew 15.7 percent to 6.52 trillion yen.

Toyota said foreign exchange gains contributed 100 billion yen to operating profits in the quarter. It kept its assumptions for the yen at 115 per dollar and 150 per euro.

Toyota kept its operating and net forecasts at 2.25 trillion yen and 1.65 trillion yen, respectively, for the year to end-March 2008. Consensus forecasts are for 2.45 trillion yen and 1.77 trillion yen.

Analysts also say Toyota is taking steps to spread out its source of earnings to rely less on North America through rapid growth in Europe and Asia.

That's important as sales growth in the United States inevitably slows down from the heady rate of the past few years. Last month, Toyota's U.S. sales fell for the first time in almost three years, mainly due to a high base the year before.

"A lot depends on the U.S. economy. Right now there are problems in the housing market, and we're hearing about an economic decline," said Shigemi Nonaka, special adviser at Polestar Investment Management. "But in terms of the stock price, Toyota looks cheap right now."

Domestic rival Honda Motor Co. last week also reported a sharp rise in quarterly profits fuelled by better sales, and lifted its full-year forecasts to reflect a softer-than-expected yen.

Japan's third-ranked Nissan Motor Co., meanwhile, had a worse-than-expected drop in profits as sales of bigger vehicles tanked in the United States due to high pump prices.

In the three months to June 30, Toyota shares gained 3.3 percent to 7,800 yen, trailing Tokyo's transport sector subindex, which rose 5.8 percent. They have since lost another 9 percent, again underperforming the sector.

Prior to the earnings announcement, Toyota shares closed up 0.1 percent at 7,080 yen, just 2 percent above a year-to-date low of 6,950 yen hit in the previous session.

I see some signs of a mature product line effect coming with only the Highlander being new for 08. In the Globe yesterday they confirmed that there is nothing else for Toyota this coming year other than the new Lexus SUV.

Sure the Camry is still fresh and the Yaris is fine, but how long can they possible expect to stretch the Corolla or even the Matrix. They both need changes. Even the top end Avalon and Solaras are getting on in age. The Corolla will be three years behind both Honda and Mazda before they do something. Not good methinks.

The US got two new Scions this year; that helps put some freshness into Toyota's lineup besides just the big vehicles.  I say "freshness," not "youth," because the new xB and the xD have moved away from Scion's import tuner roots, and are now practical-but-bland urban transportation (albeit still odd-looking, inside and out).

The xB gained something like 500 lbs.  Need I say more?

Toyota sales strategy: Get greener, younger
David Barkholz
Automotive News
August 8, 2007 - 9:57 am EST

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — Toyota Motor Corp. is eying a three-pronged North American sales offensive by focusing on young people, green technology and improved showroom service, says executive Jim Lentz.

With four million potential new drivers entering the market each year, Toyota estimates that North American vehicle sales will reach about 18 units by 2010 from about 16.3 million this year, said Lentz, executive vice president of Toyota Motor Sales USA.

Staying up with young people tastes for computer gadgets and personalizing their rides is top of mind at Toyota, Lentz told a conference audience here this morning.

Toyota’s Scion brand, which lets customers accessorize their cars to a large extent, is “a listening post and lab for learning the needs of youth customers,” he said.

Today, Scion vehicles allow buyers to choose from 150 accessories from about 40 when the brand was rolled out. Accessories range from subwoofers and multiple video monitors to performance clutches, he said.

The 148 million Americans 35 years old and under have $2.3 trillion in buying power. They’ll inherit another $17 trillion in the future or three times the current national debt, he said.

Toyota also is concerned about the car-buying experience, Lentz says. Research shows that car buyers want to spend no more than two hours buying a vehicle. Yet, it can take 5-7 hours. With young people accustomed to instant messaging and immediate communication, they’ll have even less patience when car buying, he said.

“We have to improve, streamline and put fun back into the retail experience,” Lentz said.

He said one-fourth of customers leave a dealership without buying because of the treatment they received. That hurts credibility as the industry fights in Congress over policies and potential legislation, he said.

And legislation demanding better fuel economy and lower emissions is on the horizon. A proposal gaining steam would raise fleet fuel economy from 27 miles per gallon to 35 miles per gallon.

Lentz said Toyota last month launched a program to road test plug-in hybrid vehicles with the University of California. That’s part of a flood of new hybrid vehicles coming into the market.

Toyota is a leader in hybrids with the Prius along with hybrid options on its Camry sedans and Highlander among. There are 11 million hybrids on the road in the world today, Lentz said. Altogether, there are 60 hybrids and alternative fuel vehicles on sale in the United States with another 19 models in development, he said.

And all automakers are working on zero-emission, hydrogen and fuel-cell vehicles.

“It’s time to transform our image from an industry that drags its feet to one that runs on innovation,” he said.

Toyota courts Tundra buyers with accessories
Richard Truett
Automotive News
August 7, 2007 - 2:32 pm EST

Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. is counting on a line of dealer-installed performance and appearance accessories to boost sales of the full-sized Tundra pickup.

Mike O'Brien, Toyota's manager for corporate planning, says dealers' ability to close the deal can increase by as much as 25 percent when buyers can choose from such things as bigger wheels, bed liners, interior trim upgrades and other accessories.

O'Brien spoke today during a panel discussion on vehicle customizing at the Management Briefing Seminars.

Toyota worked hard to understand how buyers would use the new Tundra and then created a line of accessories that dealers could sell, O'Brien says. Some of the parts are made by Toyota, while others are built by suppliers that receive technical data from Toyota.

O'Brien said Toyota designers and engineers went to ranches, mining camps, construction sites, ski resorts and farms and observed how trucks were being used. They quizzed snowplow drivers, for instance, and made sure the Tundra's frame could accommodate a plow. "What we learned was we needed to build in strong capabilities. That had to be the foundation," O'Brien said.

Buyers are looking for one-stop shopping when it comes to customizing vehicles, said John Waraniak, vice president of vehicle technology for the Specialty Equipment Market Association. They like the convenience of customizing vehicles with factory-approved parts, having dealers install the items and then rolling the cost into the vehicle loan.

According to SEMA, the pickup segment accounts for about $11.5 billion a year of the $36.5 billion consumers spend yearly to personalize their vehicles.

Feds step-up investigation on self-accelerating Lexus ES350 sedans
http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/16/feds-step-up-investigation-on-self-accelerating-lexus-es350-seda/

An all-weather floor mat available in the Lexus ES350 sedan that can jam the throttle and cause the car to accelerate on its own is being investigated by the NHTSA following 40 separate incidents of the frightening event occurring. Of the 40 drivers that experienced unintended acceleration, eight ended up crashing the vehicle with 12 injuries recorded overall.

Toyota told officials that it had mailed out a letter earlier in the year warning owners that the problem was caused by the mats not being secured properly, but the NHTSA is continuing its investigation to determine if Toyota's response was adequate. One outcome from the NHTSA's latest investigation could see Toyota conducting a recall, though this seems unlikely.

If this sounds familiar, you'd be right. Just yesterday we posted a story about runaway Toyota Prius hybrid cars. Officials cited the same faulty floor-mats as the reason for the problems, but most owners believe a defect in the car itself is the main reason.

Lexus is also facing a potential lawsuit over the airbag system in the ES350.

A buddy of mine had the same problem with his old BMW 323i.  The Canadian Tire carpets were hitting the gas pedal (the bottom is fixed to the floor).  He never replaced the carpets ... too expensive he said.  Idiot! :rofl2:

I assume we are talking about aftermarket floor mats here?

Make sure your car accessories work properly with your car. Toyota shouldn't be held responsible for this one, imo.

but most owners believe a defect in the car itself is the main reason.

Just like the Audis that accelerate by themselves.
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.

I read the article as being about an official Lexus accessory.
