Sneaky SPAM E-mail
« on: November 16, 2006, 11:00:25 pm »
I have had this a few times now: go to delete a SPAM e-mail and I get a pop-up window saying that the sender wants a notification that the e-mail has been deleted or read, send yes/no.

I of course never send as all it would do is confirm my e-mail address as being valid.

What I was interested in letting people know is to check your default setting in your e-mail program to make sure it is not automatically sending such notices without your knowledge.  Just another way to protect your e-mail address.  I am sure I had to set this in Outlook as the default was to just send them.

Some coworkers have received e-mails supposedly from retailers such as Circuit City and Walmart.  These e-mails look like a confirmation for a purchased made by credit card.  The e-mails look official to the point that some people contacted their credit card companies to check if this purchase had been made fraudulently.  Of course, the whole thing is bogus...probably 'phishing' for credit card numbers.   >:(

We get this from our customers a lot, also from spammers. Despite constant education about the ramifications some of our people kept responding to these. I blocked it altogether on the server.

Outlook sends a message saying "the recipient has deleted your message"?  What possible benefit can that have for anyone...?

Confirms that your e-mail address is valid, very useful (and potentially profitable) to the spamer.

Thanks for the advice.  Btw,  how much money is involved in spamming?
