Used Car Review:
Lexus ES300/330, 2002-2006

2005 Lexus ES330Like the Camry upon which it is based, the third generation Lexus ES is known for excellent reliability, says Chris Chase. "The one well-known issue is erratic shifting from the five-speed automatic transmission. Lexus has issued a fix, however," he says.     More...

An aquaintance of mine had a ES 300 and had 0 problems with it. Only had to do regular oil changes etc. He was so happy with the car that he traded it in for the new ES that's out now and loves it even more. They seem to hold their value quite well.

I suppose that if one absolutely has to have a Camry then the Lexus is the ultimate expression
The most radical revolutionary will become a conservative the day after the revolution.

My Dad drives one of these, he seems to really enjoy it. I think it's boring as hell, but that's just me.  He's had no problems with it at all over the 3 years.

Looks like GM carbon copied that dash design for nearly all of their vehicles now  :rofl2:

The outgoing generation ES is painful to look at, but really pleasant to drive and spend time in.

I used to think, "THAT's my next car." because I loved the Camry so much.

I still think it looks really elegant.....

The new ES 350 is much improved in the looks department over the old IMO. The front end of the old was just weird looking.

I know reliability and interior quality are fantastic, but if you asked me to name one car that I thought of when I heard the word "boring," the ES would be it.

A family member had a ES300. After a few years, he couldn't wait to get rid of it because it was so boring to drive (he had Preludes and Mazdas before). The car (well maintained) with 48,000 KM had a few front suspension noises. Nothing that couldn't be fixed but still surprising considering the Lexus reputation. After all, shXX happens, even to a Lexus...

He replaced it with a new IS. He wouldn't buy anyting else than Lexus because of the service. To give you an idea, he traded in his car while it was 500 KM away from his dealer (because of a work assignment) during a trip back home. Dealer made arrangements to go pick it up the car and bring it back. He drove back in his new IS... as a happy camper as one can be.

How does he find the IS compared to the ES300? Any fun to drive this time?

I haven't driven the new IS but the previous IS and the ES (like the one pictured) are miles apart.  One is a lazy yacht....the other a small speedboat.

I drove the IS250 between a E90 330 and a G35.....while both the Bimmer and the G felt much more immediate than the TSX, the Lexus drove like more of the same, with a bit more oomph and a much better turning circle.

On the other hand, the IS was wearing winter tires, so this probably isn't a good comparison.

Wow, this thread of 1 year is revived by a guest saying he has visited our site 985 times!  ???

I don't mind the post revival, good to hear more opinions. I am just wondering what the guest's post was about.

This is a one-year old thread! That's why some of my tastes may have changed, haha!!

Actually, that foretelling may come true. My sweet husband is letting me pick his next car..... so, guess what I'm going to pick?............. Yup, that's right, *his* favorite car.......... That almost guarantees that it's going to be another Camry or Lexus ES...... (I think he planned this on purpose )

and depending on how long the Camry holds up, I could be waiting a long, long time to pick his next car..... :( for me, but good for our bank account.

Actually, I still have lots of appreciation for the car. We took it recently on a 6-hour drive to Ottawa where we had to pack some stuff and it was very comfortable.

Such is the greatness of the Camry...it happily does what its designed to do, all day, every day, without fail and without costing a fortune.

Seriously, because (so far), it causes no problems and it's cheap to drive/maintain, it has a really good chance of staying in our stable for a looooong time...... :(  ;D

Hey, come to think of it, I think Ovr's Highlander may be one of the car's he's kept the longest!

It's another type of satisfaction.

You never know when a heavy tree branch can fall on even the most reliable car.  It happens.
