Eliminator Solar Panels, 1.8 Watt from C.Tire
« on: March 30, 2006, 04:58:55 pm »
Since we have many smart people here….Does anybody know how good these things are?  My intended use is simple - charging of batteries (using a battery charger of course) or cell phone.

How long would it take to charge something, if it could?

This would be used in the places where we camp but have no power to charge batteries.

Edit: fixed the link to the correct model.

They are on sale for $9.99

In Port Alberni, it takes until June 17th to charge a battery as that is the only day of the year that we normally get any sun!!  :o Seriously, I have no idea how much sun is required before they are efficient in converting light into usable power. A solar powered calculator needs little ambient light, but then the power requirements are tiny as well. It's a good question. I hope someone has a good answer.  ;D

My brother uses them to charge the family cottage batteries, were talking automotive. I’m not sure on the wattage but they are charging all week until someone goes out the next weekend.

1.8 watts.    so to charge a car battery you need about 13v to get over the internal resistance of the battery   watts = volts* amps so assuming the device can actually put out 13 v  thats  138 Milliamps  the Can tire thing suggests 125 so I''l believe that.

A very long time to charge a car battery even if it is just at 3/4 charge already...

but if you can leave them on alll week   say 5 * 12 hour days...

I have the 5W model.  I use it to recharge my kids battery powered R/C car.   The 1.8W would take a long time to charge up a depleted car battery.  It is intended to keep the battery topped up when you don't use your car for a long time.  If you have central remote locks, etc., your car is always on.  You also can use it to charge small recharge electronic devices.

The 1.8W panel is intended to act as a trickle charger...  if you want to charge batteries, you should have picked up the bigger panel when it was on sale a couple weeks back for half price.  :)

I guess the good thing is that if it was on sale at Cdn Tire it will be on sale again at Cdn Tire.  I missed a sale on something else there and two months later is was on sale again.  I missed that one and now it is on sale again this week.  Hopefully I will make it this time.

Only if your vibe uses rechargable batteries.   Don't attempt to recharge regular alkalines.  You'll get more than a buzz.

My local CT restocked their shelves and I was able to pick up a 1.8W unit for $9.95.  Time to think up some science projects for the kids.
