I agree with you on the Jeep GC. Your description would equally desribe the Toyota 4Runner.  :o

I don't love the new 4Runner either. That centre stack with oddly shaped HVAC controls bugs me, but it looks a tad better than GC and at least there's a bit more room in it.

The Pathfinder is much more appealing to me in execution.

I think the Fit really takes the cake for me. Really nicely executed. I realize it has a much smaller engine, but I'd rather have small (smartly packaged I can actually fit into) and well-done than a larger piece of gar-bage. No doubt in my mind these will sell well though.

Looks rather promising to me. Not big on the looks but its by not means aweful. The base version seems like a heck of a deal. I'd be wary of the CVT though ... not that I'd go with anything other than a manual if I were to buy.

It certainly looks like at least one domestic is listening.  Is that possible?

I would wait it out a year or two to see if the CVT holds up, but were I in the market, I could see myself in this car, which is a lot more than I could say for about 95% of domestics.

The base 1.8L is manual-only. I get the feeling this engine won't be around long if that's the case.

So most will be 2.0L CVT's around $18,700. Not bad for most people, as you're not even at the base price of a Vibe yet ($19,900). Mind you, there'll be an all-new Vibe/Matrix soon.

Maybe we should start another topic for GC/4runner/Path... so we wouldn't disgress too much from the subject of this topic. I had a '98GC, have a '02 GC (Overland) and will not touch the new GC mainly because of the subpar interior and lack of interior space which is a step down from my '02. 4Runner has much better materials but its 2nd row is actually way worse than GC. Path interior materials are no better than GC and no V8 so thumb down.

Back to the Caliber, the rear design shows what the Malibu Maxx could have been and should have been. Chrysler designers did a much better job. Lets not forget this vehicle is replacing the NEON and what an improvement it is. Its unique characteristics will appeal to many new customers. It is a fresh new vehicle.

But tuning a R/T with a CVT trans is a big no-no. So yes Chrysler is obviously not pursuing this crowd, for now anyway. Who knows, maybe one day we'll see a SRT Caliber?

Well rumour has it I'll get to toss one of these in AWD variant around like a rag doll come Saturday.  I'll let you know how I feel about it ;)
You won't be tossing it to much. The AWD version is a slug off the line. Once up to speed it is not to bad. The one I drove was a pre production model,so hopefully they step it up a bit. I have not had the chance to drive a 2WD version. I'm hoping the AWD version is like the AWD aerio and matrix, both are dogs. But with the HP the 2.4l is suppost to be pushing,it should have been better. The CVT2 with autostick was slick though.
Enjoying the Alberta advantage

The SRT-4 Neon was a pretty popular ride, no?  With that in mind, we may well see the Caliber trying to take on the Civic Si in the next few years.  If they could do AWD and good performance, it would compete well too, imho.

Calibre SRT4 is confirmed.  It's going with the same powerplant as the Neon SRT4: 2.4L turbo, but with more power stock.  It's also going to have AWD.   Dodge is entering the WRC in an effort to promote its entry into the Euro market.

AWD will definitely make the SRT Caliber a more attractive package - there's only so much power you can channel through the front tires.  An EVO and STi competitor for those on a budget would be a great car.

Have you got anything to back that up. Talking to the Chrysler guys at the ride and drive, they had nothing but wishful rumors about an SRT. I would highly doubt it would use the OLD 2.4L.

Interesting that they say that they expect that they say the CVT will be there most
poopular model. If I recall almost all manufacturers dropped CVT from their lineup expect for nissan.
My understanding was that they were too unreliable and  whole replacement was the only
path to repair.
But then again for a dealership this would be a goldmine.
Kinda like those 2.7L engines. Aparently 200k is lifetime for a chrysler engineer.
Next thing ya know they will have a drive thru window for fast service.

To the best of my knowledge, saturn is the only maker that dropped a CVT from a current model. Nissan uses it,ford uses it in two models,I believe the prius has one. There are some more,I'm sure. Chrysler DID NOT design this CVT. It is made by jatco, which also supplys tranny to nissan.
