Yes more details would be nice.  Lots of choice at that price range.

TSX, CTS, G35, or Mazda 3 or 6 even.

01-02 Volvo S60 is within spitting distance of that range.
Safe, (air bags all over) luxurious, powered stuff (ps, pb, pdl, proof, pseats), leather, etc.

Keep in mind those G35's eat brakes by the truckload.  A colleague of mine has an '03 and can't wait to dump it -- probably to go back to Lexus.

For that price range, I'd start working on an '02-03 BMW 325i from a BMW dealership (Certified Series Used) that's well maintained, and optioned up the way you want it.  There are tons available.  Check them out in the pre-owned search function here: www.bmw.ca

Best of luck!

I don't know if BMW certified anything and sell for underk 30k.  :)
At that price, I'm thinking a slightly used Miata. hehehe... something fun.

I hate to say it, but I'd stick with the Japanese.  All of the Euros are prone to electrical faults.
I'd rather be car-poor than house-poor...

And most Japanese are prone to be boring to drive. So it depends what you want.

That’s a laugh. List the cars under $40k from Germany and Japan that are exciting.

Pretty much only BMWs come to mind in that price range.

There's a reason why everyone says Japanese sports sedans lack soul... it's because it's true.

Most on that list are indeed soulless... unless the car is specifically made for exciting driving experience, japanese vehicles are boring. You can't honestly tell me an Altima or Camry is as fun as a BMW to drive... And I didn't find anything special about the Mazda3 or 6 when I drove them. Stiff suspension doesn't make a car exciting to drive, it just makes it less comfortable. Engine and transmission are at least as important as the suspension IMO, and nothing beats BMW for their powertrain, but again, that's my opinion.

G35, TSX, RX-8, WRX and LGT are about the only ones in your list that have some "soul"... but the rest, bah... Cars like the Camry/ES and Avalon are about as pedestrian as you can find anywhere.

But that's just my opinion.

The guy wants something with a bit of luxury, safe and fun to drive. I don't see many other options than a nice BMW that fit better his requirements. Maybe the G35, but no doubt that a BMW is a better overall package than the G35.

Mazda's suspensions are great, they are soft when you want them to be soft yet firm when you want sporty.  I really love the mazda suspension on the 3 6 and 8.
