Used Z4 3.0?
« on: December 18, 2005, 08:58:25 pm »
Hello,
A friend of mine is considering trading in his 350z for a used Z4. I dunno what to say as I have very little knowledge on these Z3 replacements. Any thoughts? Reliability wise? not that the Nissan was a poster child for reliability....  ::)

The Z4 is on my Summer of 2007 Roadster list along with the Boxster S and S2000. I have started to research all 3 models. From what I have found the Z4 is reliable but there have been some power equipment and body hardware issues. Not as nimble as the S2000 or Boxster in the handling department. The research continues…

Just go with a Corvette C6 Snowy....it's faster and probably more affordable.  That's what you keep telling me.  ;)

If it were me, I'd go with a new 987 Boxster.  No comparision.

I have no info to add about the Z4...aside from the fact they look funny to me.  I think Bob_defly had one prior to the orange machine.

I don't see a whole lot of 'em around. The styling is quite unique I guess. I think the new Boxsters are out of his price range right now. I figured, the engine is from the e46 3-series, so the general powertrain issues should've been figured out by now. Interesting car indeed... heard the M version is coming out.

I wasn't telling your buddy to go for the Boxster.....that would be my car of choice if I had Snowy's money.

  :nono: I am looking to get a used Z4, Boxster S, or S2000 in the spring of 2007 for below $35k. I do not think a C6 will be in that range by then. :'(

For under $35K?  No.  Doubtful the C6 would be near that price...but possibly under $40K....now that's bang for buck if you take a look at the performance vs. price.  The C6 will eat the other cars for brunch.   ;)

Ghost, by what I've heard (which, admittedly isn't much about used Z4s), you're probably right in thinking that the majority of bugs have been worked out with the drivetrain.  It's the electrical gremlins in BMWs that concern me.  However, if it's well maintained and low-mileage and fairly new, it's probably got a few good years of useful, cost-effective and fun life left in it.

I've always found the few Z3's I drove to be buckets of fun, great sounding and sexy to look at.  The Z4 (especially the 3L) just take all that to the next level.  I'd love to have one.  In that darker-grey colour please with the big sport pkg wheels.  Sexy.  If he's a 350Z driver, he's obviously not worried about the most visceral, nimble and tossable car available and the Z4 will provide a nice, rare machine with a good sport / touring compromise.

I would prefer the Boxster or S2K over the Z4...  but those both sound like more dedicated sports cars than the Z4...  if he's driving a 350Z now, the Z4 is probably a better match?  Plus, he can still call it a Z car.  ;)

Tell your friend to drive all three.  A slightly used Boxster (or a more used Boxster S), a Honda S2000, and the Z4. My choice would be a 2001 Boxster S. (because I couldn't afford anything newer).

The maintaince part has always scared me in the Boxster - I mean you can't even see the engine never mind how it gets worked on. I assume for anything more than a oil change the whole engine has to be dropped. Sounds like big money to me - at least the Z4 or S2000 have inline engines at the front to make servicing easier (and your bill less).

Nah, I am quite sure he doesn't want a used Boxster. For the trade-in value, he can get a regular Boxster which has like 200hp. Also he's not really into the S2k as after driving a 3.5l V6 engine with lots of tq, the S2k screamer is not his cup of tea. <shrug> I think the Z4 is a good bet as the only thing to worry about are electrical gremlins as with most german cars. Arthur makes a good case about maintenance cost of a boxster too.

I still have a soft spot for the"original" M3-Roadster.  Sure, it's 240hp is nothing special now, but the wider arches and other touches really made the Z3 for me.

Unless you can manage to find one of the few rare '02 models with 315 hp.  Giddyup!

A buddy of mine has a beautiful red M roadster...I've put in my offer multiple times to purchase it from them...but to no avail.

For me is the unloved M Coupe. There's one in autotrader right now. If I am still in Ontario, I'd buy it straight up.  :(

Yes the Z3 is a much better looking car than the Z4. An M Roadster would be an extremely nice find.

yeah the chassis that the Z3 uses dates back to the e90 with some kinda semi-trailing arm design. Not very good for handling purposes. The reinforced M Coupe is better for handling.
