Count me in on the PRO ABS side. I was coming home from Simcoe a few Aprils ago and got stuck in an ice rain storm. I was going up highay 24 towards Brantford and after coming over a hill there were several cars stopped in the middle of the rroad. ABS plus my dirver's training saved me from an expensive crash as the ABS was able to slow me enough to get two tires onto the shoulder where there was some gravel to give me more grip. I wonder what percentage of drivers have the skill and knowledge to be able to brake better without ABS? Car and Driver has commented on cars taking longer to stop in comparisons without ABS (think previous Vipers).

I am definately on the pro ABS side. A few weeks ago, in a car loaded with 4 tires in the trunk/rear compartment, in a heavy rainstorm, I stamped on the brakes at 70kmh just before a traffice light. The ABS kicked in immediately and the car stopped well clear of the line.. I know that I would not have been able to react and start pumping my brakes fast enough to avoid wheel lock up in such a case.  Not only that, but the human body can't pump the brakes as fast as ABS does it.

Although I didn't like the ABS on my Forester in a couple of winter situations (e.g. downhill slope with ice and thin coating of snow), overall I am highly in favour of ABS, especially since I live in a temperate rain forest. I would be reluctant to buy a car without it.

I haven't used the ABS system in my car many times, but when I have, I was glad to have had it there.  Just the other day a nut-job pulled out from a side-street stop sign right in front of me.  I hammered the brake pedal and the BAS (Brake Assist) took the car into full ABS braking.  I cranked the wheel and swung the car hard left as there was no way to stop in time.  Thanks to the maximum braking the car was slowed quite a bit and I was able to steer under full braking around the moron, avoiding a collision.

One problem with ABS is that most people have no idea of how to use it.  Years ago I had to "teach" my wife how to use the ABS system.  She had spent so much time releasing the pedal under lock-up to seek the threshold, that she would release the pedal when the ABS pulsed.  I suspect many folks do just that, negating the benefit of ABS and actually making things worse.  Once she got used to just mashing the pedal and letting the computer do the work, she was fine.

I agree that not all systems are created equal.  Both the Subaru and MB systems seem to work very well, with high pulse rates (meaning lots of pulses per second for effective braking) and good pedal feel.

One thing that people need to understand is that ABS, ESP, and so on cannot create traction where there is none.  Good tires are still the real key to safe driving.  (and good skills too...)

Big ABS fan (good, 4 sensor, 3/4 channel ABS).  Did the BMW skid pad driving for emergency manouvers with and without ABS and the other goodies.  Turn off the goodies, ABS in particular, and the course is near impossible.  The instructor could do it, but not one of the $500 paying, BMW driving, car enthusiasts (me included) could.

The 3 instructors all said that ABS is the same level of control as a trained professional driver having a good day.  They all drive cars with ABS and do not deactivate it.

Count me as a PRO ABS fan.  Have had it on all cars and trucks (4 wheel ABS, some p/u's had 2 wheel going back into the late 80's, they don't count) that I have owned/leased since 1996.

I know some people say that non-ABS is better in snow and gravel but from my experience driving logging roads, I would rather have the ABS and live with the slightly longer stopping distances so that I can have much better directional control.  Steer to avoid rather than hope you can stop in time.

As the original poster implied, all of these electronic 'aids' are great, until they break down.  Then, they become very expensive.  The question is, are they worth the high repair cost on a used vehicle?   I have 4 wheel ABS on my 2000 Ford Ranger, and I like it.  I don't have ABS on my 1990 V8 Miata, and I'm not very concerned about it.  If I had the choice of installing ABS or a big brake kit on my Miata, I'd go with the big brake kit.  Funny thing is, I've been driving for over 20 years without ABS, and managed to survive.

The simple basic kinds of ABS hit and release the brakes up to 80 times a sec, that was in the early days about 10 to 15 years ago . They have come a long ways as Ovr has pointed out and are much more efficeint then they ever were. That goes for all makes and models who have them. Bosch Alone has built at least 3 different models over the years for many diffferent Vehicle Manufacturers including GM. The higher level of the vehicle dictates which system you get. I would rather have it and NOT Need it then NOT have it and Need it.  :)

It helped me, the first 3-4 days i drove here for the first time the ABS was invoked almost 3-4 times in my 40km daily drive...

But then again i was driving a 37bhp, 800cc car in india for 8 years and then directly moved to a 115bhp, 2.2l car WITH excellent road quality so i was a little heavy on the throttle..just was being used to a different type of car....
Back home any car that makes more than 85bhp is considered a fast car...

Anyway the instances of ABS being activated in my car are decreasing and it hasn't been activated on Friday and my drive to office so far....

I think if i wouldnt have had ABS then i might have ended up near the middle of the intersection on red a few times now...

I thank GM for putting this option in a entry level car...

You need to change the way you drive before you get into an accident.

Its just getting used to driving here...

I was driving cars in India for 8 years and Motorcycles (bikes) for 4 years in India without any accidents.
The only accident i had was brush against a wall while backing up and taking a tight 90deg left
I believe driving here is much more systematic so just so much easier...i just have to get used to the weather conditions and the traffic system...

I just hope i remain accident free till then...driving here is easier....just that i have to get used to it....
