I had a 1993 Sunbird with the 3.1L V-6 (my first car really) and it was actually not too bad. It had great power being a V-6 in such a small car and was pretty reliable for me. The only reason I flipped it was that I had a company vehicle and didn't see the need for having a second car. Definately not a Civic, Corolla, Protege though.

Some people do not have the disposable income to buy or lease anything more expensive. The car has had some issues but it has served its targeted market. They are disposable cars and they work.

Oh everyone would love to have a honda or toyota but for those who can't afford them the sun/cav are a great deal. Having driven both I can tell you the ride is terrbile but you can't beat the value which makes it all worth while.

One of my friend got a cavalier 2000 model with 8.8 km at the price of CA$6200, including a one-year warranty. Is that a bad deal or not?

8.8 km ?  ??? Perhaps you should try that information again. Few NEW cars come with that little on their clocks.  :o

I had the misfortune of getting a 2004 Sunfire as a rental for a whole month after the wife crashed Neon. Horrible little crap-box. Really made me miss the Neon! For a similar budget price the 2000+ Neons are much better put together.

Ouch that says a lot about the Sunfire!

Having driven in a 2005 Focus recently, I have to say that it is now an excellent vehicle compared to any Neon or Cavalier/Sunfire I have ever sat in. If I was looking at a cheap used domestic compact, a recent Focus would be it. If I was looking at a cheap used compact, no matter where it comes from, the Elantra would be my pick. In any case, the Cavalier/Sunfire would be at the very bottom of my list. They wouldn't be on my list actually.

What about the new Cobalt and Pursuit. Anyone compared its dynamics, quality etc to the previous gen Cavalier/Sunfire. With the GM depreciation that goes on they might make a great used car purchase.

seemed like a solid but boring car. A little mini-Buick almost.

 :'(  Pretty harsh comments, lol.

I take no offense though, I know what my car is and I never pretend it's something else.

Like I've mentioned elsewhere, this is my 3rd cavalier.  My first 2 were an '84 and an '87.  All 4 cyl. All Auto.  I also grew up with these cars, my mom, stepdad, dad, brother and uncle have all owned one at one point or another.

My main gripe with these cars is the cheap interior.  The squeeking and rattling really gets on your nerves after a while.  The brakes need to be changed annually (although paying 12$ pwer rotor is pretty nice).  The seats are horribly uncomfortable.

None the less...I really like these cars.  Call me crazy, but they're fun to drive (of course, my suspension is slightly modified, lol).  I bought mine brand new.  My payments will be done in May of 2006.  After that, I'm looking forward to 2-3 years payment free, cheap repairs/maintenance and cheap insurance rates.  Not to mention, the technology they're built on is so primitive and outdated that they're really easy to work on (I do all my own maintenance).

My mother owns a '95 Cavalier Coupe that she bought brand new (This despite my warnings that it was the first MY of the redesign, but she never listens to me anyways ::))

Aside from issues with the torque converter in the AT (Which GM refused to pay to fix, claiming that my mother abused thr car... to date the thing has a mere 60,000km on it and only had 30,000 on it when the converter failed at year 5, yeah real abuse there General :-\) she's been happy with it.  I've always hated riding in it, too low to the ground and it never felt solid to me.

Lol @ "too low to the ground".  I lowered mine 1.5" and my GF lowered hers 2".  Along with strut bars, sway bars, subframe braces and Nice sticky tires, it handles pretty well for a FWD tin can.

The 91-94 Cavs are low.  If they were any lower, you'd get road rash on your arse.  >:(

Heh, I should have prefaced that comment by explaining that I have a torn up knee from an auto accident and require a knee brace to prevent lateral movement of the knee.  The Cavy coupe is therefore one of my not so fun to get into/out of rides.

Not like my Focus, on 16" rubber the thing has a 4x4 like entry/exit.  That car could benefit from being lowered an inch or so...

Ever tried to get in and out of the new Celica?  lol.  Talk about Low to the ground.  You got seat/floor board, lol.  Your knees are practically not even bent sitting in that thing.

I didn't find the Celica that bad for getting in and out. Granted I only test drove one once years and years ago. The only car I've found a PITA to get in and out of was my old Reliant Scimitar - big honking steering + seats that don't move back and forth = very ungraceful entry/exit.

Tried the seating on an '04 Ford Mustang while waiting to pick up the Focus after I bought it this past April... I thought I was gonna need a crane to get out of that thing, so I'm sure the Celica would be the same...

That reminds me, I did happen to sit in a '04 Cavy sedan while I was car shopping this year, not as bad as the coupe was, but still lower than I would like to deal with on a day in/day out basis :-\
