Anyone Bought a 2006 Subaru Imprezza Lately?
« on: October 28, 2005, 06:59:29 pm »
My old aunt wants to sell her '95 Subaru Legacy wagon and get a 2006 Impreza 2.5i Sport Wagon.   She wants me to do the negociating for her, as the dealers are praying on a lady who's never bought new herself before....

Any suggestions on how far I can work them down?  I know the 2006's are hot off the lot, but I also know Subbie has been cursed with slower sales, so I am hoping one of the 3 dealers around here will bemotivated to move on the price

any advice on dealer with subbie dealers?

I thought you were going to buy one in the US because you can save so much money?

My diesel car self-identifies as an electric vehicle.

I am waiting for mine to come in - 2 more weeks and counting! There is a big price difference on the WRX, not so on thr baser model wagon,  In teh US I simply went online and found, for FREE, the US invoice cost, split the difference with the dealer, and done.

CDN market is much less competitive, so the dealers seem to play more games.

In the US you should pay Invoice or LESS.  Splitting the difference means you got hosed :(

There are other incentives etc etc besides that invoice price.

I split the difference  excluding incentives, of course  ::)  so the total cost was $23,300USD.

I reiterate my question, any special tactics for negociating at a Canadian dealer?  They give quite the run around!

Best thing to do is go to www.apa.ca or www.carcostcanada  pay the fee (around $40) and get the invoice price.

I don't think markup on the Subbies is alot, so don't expect a great discount, specially when a Subaru is priced very competively for a 4wd car IMO ($23k)
Viva el coche!

Bought the 06 WRX wagon.

I got dealer invoice from APA and worked out a deal at cars4u.com.

2% over invoice
Air Tax  $100
Freight & PDI  $1295
Ontario Fuel Tax  $75

Good luck with your car purchase.

sorry...forgot to introduce myself.

I've been reading the forum for the past 6 months.  Doing research for the new car.

We tend to keep our cars for a long time.  Last time was in 1994, Honda Accord.

I must say I always find it amusing when a federal government employee buys products from outside the country...it speaks volumes.

Hey, the government stops the economy from working efficiently..  The market will allow countries to produce that which they are most efficient at producing, getting them lower prices...  Tarrifs, taxes and quota hurt the economy in the name of protectionism.

JD, what has to be done to a 2006 US WRX, when brought into Canada?  What extra cost will you have to pay, not including GST & PST?  Also, what about warranty work?
When one factors in the exchange rate the STI and WRX are much cheaper in the US.
WRX  US car in Canadian funds   $29,004
WRX Canadian car                     $35,495
STI US car in Canadian funds      $39,607
STI Canadian car                       $48,995
Why so much more?  $6500 for the WRX and $9388 for the STI :P
Yes, there are changes made to meet Canadian standards, but other manufactures sell their Canadian models at close to the same price as their US counterparts.

Back in 2001-2003, the situation was reversed - Subarus were significantly CHEAPER in Canada than in the US, and a number of people on Edmunds talked about importing Canadian cars. Seems like no adjustment has been made for the change in currency rates. If prices had been adjusted to reflect US-Canadian exchange rates, Subies would be a real steal!  ;D

Actually if they adjust the prices they will do so based on the american dollar, I would suspect no change to the canadian pricing but the US pricing should go up based on their weak dollar.

84im,

You will have to pay an extra 6% duty due to teh car being from Japan, but some of that will be offset by the $700 you'll save in GST.  There is about $200 worth of modifications needed - Have the DRL's turned on (computer-controlled) and child latch installed.  The dash is in MPH, but has the usual KPH below it, like we have here but reveresed, so it's allowed.  I would, however, poney up a few more hundred $$$ to get a KPH dash put in, then there would be no difference between then two.

So, it looks like a savings of over $5,000 everything in on a WRX.  It's even better because YOU get the Limited Package down there, you get leather and a moonroof!

Worth it for a day's trip IMHO !

An STi would be an even greater bargain!

That's why I worded it the way I did - to reflect the US-Canadian, not the Canadian-Japanese exchange rates. US stays about the same, we pay relative to the dollar-dollar rate.  ;D ;D ;D

Again, no modification to DRLs will be necessary. Subarus in the US also have DRLs standard.

The only thing the US Limited package adds that we can't get is leather, but the price is still a lot better there.
