Tires for Mazda 2004 MPV GT
« on: October 27, 2005, 10:45:54 am »
I am buying a 2004 Mazda MPV GT.  It has 30,000km.  Everything's good, except I was surprised to find the tire tread kind of low for 30,000km.  It's 215/60/17.

Some of the reviews I've heard for the OEM tire Dunlop SP 4000D (H speed) don't appear very good.  Has anyone had experience with these Dunlop tires, do they wear out really fast?

I might need to replace these tires soon, and found Goodyear Assurance Triple Tred in this size ( H speed).

Can you comment on the Goodyear and/or othern tires as replacement for this passenger van.  We drive in Toronto for family leisure purpose. Even though there will be winter snows, we'll mostly be on the major road.

Thanks a lot.

You might also consider running a 225/55R17. It is close to the same overall diameter, but you will find more tire options.

Hmmm.

215 * 60% gives 129
225 * 55% gives 123.75
whereas
235 * 55% gives 129.25

Just curious, wouldn't   the 235/55/17 be a closer fit?

I have OEM tire Dunlops on my 2002 MPV.  The Dunlops have about 52,000 kms on them, and they need to be replaced.  The winter tires will go on in a few weeks, and the Dunlops will be replaced before Spring.  I posted on this forum recently about replacements, and a reply included this link:

Your van should probably the same, but with larger (16"?) wheels.  Change the number at the end of the url to the correct wheel diameter, and you get a big selection.

The recommendation from this group was BFG Traction TA, Bridgestone Turanza LSH, Kumho Ecsta ASX, Toyo Proxes TPT, Yokohama Avid H4S

So Jonl, you had winter tires, and the OEM all season Dunlop still need to be replaced at 52,000km?!?   That's not very good treadwear for the Dunlop.

My rim is 17", with OEM 215/60/17.   There are fewer tires made in 17", that's why I was asking about alternates to 215/60/17.

I deducted the winter kilometers.  The van has 62,000 on it, approx 10,000 of them on the winter tires.

3 of the 4 OEM Dunlops seem ok, but one shows a bit of uneven wear.  I could probably safely get another season from them, but these (like most OEM tires) are not what I would have chosen, so I prefer to replace as soon as I can justify the expense.

The 235/55/17 will be closer in OD, but concerned that the tire will be too wide for the original equipment wheels.
