06 WRXs are shaming STi
« on: October 15, 2005, 10:57:06 pm »
Not sure if any one is interested except for some Subi-nuts, but i came across a few threads in Nasioc that the 06 WRXs are putting monster numbers at the dynos! 13.6 1/4s are achieved by these WRXs. whoa! at this rate and for the price, the 2.5 WRXs are good buys over the STis too.

Hmmm.... lookin' good.  I've yet to see any '06 Imprezas on the road yet which sort of surprises me.  Older WRXs are everywhere around here.  Too bad the lease rates are so crummy on 'em.

you're right... I'm not attracted to nose jobs.   Especially nose jobs gone horribly wrong.  I would like to keep an eye out for '04-'05 used STi's though, too bad they are uncommon.

WRXs are better buys over STis only if hp count is a main reason behind buying STi. I do like 300hp, but more important (for me) are more advandced drivetrain, bullet-proof 6-speed transmission, brembo breaks, inverted shocks, etc., etc.  STi is in a different than WRX league in terms of handling (I used to have both).  Well, some folks do buy STi for its power, but even for them launching in WRX is a bit riskier business than in STi.

I will agree on the brakes, the WRX is week in that area. The DCD is not a big deal from what I have read. The six speeds would be nice, but I only use 4 gears up though to 200 kph. That one less shift below 100 kph is nice. My MT5 have lasted 97K with no issues with 350 hp. ;D

For the extra $10k plus. I have trouble. The STi should be priced in the $40-$42 range….not $47.

Now that the 06 WRX has the 4 pot fronts and 2pots rear plus larger disks, I am sure the brakes are about the same. Throw in some Williams pad and u're good to go. Only thing left are the sorry ass RE92s. But for over 10k price lower than an STi, you can get a truck load of S03s or whatever tires you fancy.
Anyways this is not to take away what the STi is...just to highlight how Subaru is under-rating the new WRXs to keep the STi sales up.

Well, I think it is; WRX feels like FWD and STi feels like RWD in either full open DCCD or in auto. The difference is quite noticeable at the race track and on a high-speed highway cruising. Also, the front and rear diffs works wonders in the winter - car feels much more stable than WRX. The best way to compare two cars is to drive both; even my reasonably moded WRX (f/r sway bars, f/r strut braces, prodrive springs, KYB shocks, BBS 17x7 wheels) never felt as stable and responsive as my still stock STi.

I'd like to drive a 2.5L WRX.  I found the 2.0 suffering terrible turbo lag and the STi certainly has no lag if your're comparing the two.  Driving the STi I wondered why the 6-cogger as it's got lots of torque and good low-rpm boost, but the 6-speeds do make it a bit easier to keep the boost up, but that's only when you're really cooking.  Really cooking in an STi means that you'll go to jail if someone with a badge is a witness.

I think the 06 WRX is now a better value at $36K now that it has the 2.5L.

There are used STi's out there, and if you're willing to part with cash, you can find them.  They're not bargains, but since the STi customer is usually (the ones I met, anyway) quite well-heeled, the cars are well cared-for.  $38-40K will get you into a sweet STi.  It's not that far from the new price, but when you consider that a new STi will run well into the $50K's with taxes, PDI, etc. $40K isn't that bad for a low km example.

Wondering if they could fit any 'ol 2006 Impreza...

...as I think the 06 Impreza "base" would be a winner with stand alone options of HID and heated seats.

I drove an Sti albeit for a short period and did not notice that much of a difference. Then again I am not a professional driver on a nice racetrack.

“WRX feels like FWD”   ??? ??? WTF..

I completely disagree with this statement….never.

I blame the wrx's handling woes on the RE92s. All it needs is a good set of street tires. My 92x (pseudo WRX wagon) shod with factory summer RE010s handles really well. I've taken her to some turns and velocity that would embarass many sportier cars. In fact I managed to outrun a 3-series up by the Forks on the Credit twisties.

snowy, my first impression of STi was not that great - it drives pretty rough and gets this annoying bobbing tendency on bad roads. When you start to push it, you see the difference! I am not a pro-driver and my track experience is quite limited (3-4 track days and 2-3 auto-xs a year), but when both STi and WRX pushed to their limits, WRX understeers more, behaving like a FWD. Even with suspension mods the underseering behavior of WRX remained (sometimes I would get snap-oversteer - not good...). STi almost neutral at the limits, it is much easier to induce power oversteer and it is freaking easy to control drifting with the throttle. I attribute these characteristics to difference in the drivetrain.  You should make a trip to Bowmanville coming spring for a track day at the Mosport - I will gladly give you drive my car for a few laps.

PS I am bit obsessed with handling, so even STi is a bit porky in my view compare to Miata or S2K, but these two are summer-only roadsters while STi can be enjoyed all year around. I hope FHI will bring Spec C at the time I need a new drive, or Mitsu will bring Evo to Canada.  Or, due to Toyota's share in the FHI, how about Yaris AWD STi Spec C?  ;)

Interesting……my WRX never understeered….even with my junk RE-92’s. I have no suspension mods….just 17” OZ’s and TOYO T1R’s.

I have pushed my car to the limit and beyond and have always experienced an understeering condition to the point of drifting around corners. I am confused ???

I will gladly give you drive my car for a few laps.
.... :)  OKAY!
