Hyundai Tucson??? HELP
« on: October 12, 2005, 09:27:15 pm »
I am looking at the Hyundai Tucson '06
I was quoted $440.00/month lease for 5 years.
This was on a AWD, 5 speed, 4 cylinder model.
I have no money down.
I have been reading some of the threads and am completely lost regarding MRSP prices, getting them to knock off PDI... and so on.
I believe the base price is 24,095.
Could someone please tell me if the monthly payments are reasonable or not.
What should I go in "armed" with?
Thanks!

Vehicle Price excludes freight, licence, P.D.I. (Pre Delivery Inspection), administration fees and applicable taxes. Lease monthly payments include freight and P.D.I. for Accent, Elantra and Tiburon only; freight and P.D.I. are extra for Sonata, XG350, Tucson and Santa Fe; $350 lease acquisition fee, licence, and applicable taxes are extra on all vehicles. Purchase monthly payments exclude freight, licence, P.D.I., administration fees and applicable taxes. Please confirm pricing with your local Hyundai Dealership.

Keep this in mind with your negotiating.  Invoice freight included on a metallic colour is about $23800, compared to the MSRP obviously there is little margin here.  About $1100.

I'm not the best expert but that seems high to me.  Did you mean to type five (5) years or did you mean four (4)?

Don't bargain based on monthly cost.  The residual is fixed.  The interest rate is fixed.  Bargain on the purchase price plus fees and taxes, then amortize the difference over the duration of the lease.

Five years is a long lease, usually with higher interest rate.  At least with Hyundai, you're under warranty (or extend the kilometres if that's an issue).  Consider 3 or 4 years, or financing a outright purchase.

To see where that payment sits, here's a comparable model.  Based on MSRP and inc. Freight/PDI, a 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara JA 5spd with a/c would be $342.74+tax=$393.30 on a 5 year lease. The MSRP is $25495+995 F&PDI.  The rate is 3.9%.  Now I have no idea if your trading in a car and burying negative equity but $40 more a month is pretty heavy.
I think your getting hosed.  There are some v6 small sport utilities that lease really well right now inc. jeep liberty/Ford Escape/Grand Vitara. If gas is your gig, then Tuscon will consume less but not a ton as although energuide list's it's city/hwy as 27/36, the 140hp engine will have a lot more work to do most of the time to haul the Tuscon up to speed.  I have heard that 4cyl. Ford Escape's are a smokin' deal right now on leases.  Even though they have a higher MSRP.  I recall putting a friend onto a 2005 Escape LTD that she's paying 473 TAX IN over 36 months/25k a year. Now she put down $2000 but that was on a veh. with an MSRP of 36k, so shop around.  Provide the rate on Tuscon, residual, Freight charge and I can work out what it should be @ MSRP.

Thanks for the feedback.
I am looking at the '06 model.
I believe the price isn't listed yet as they are new...I could be wrong though.

Soo..I should go in armed with the MSRP?
Does this mean what Hyundai paid for the vehicle compared to what they are charging me?
Also, what are all the extra charges...PDI...Freight....Admin fee.....blah blah blah??

Please explain this to me....

Argh....I don't want them to walk all over me.

If someone could send me what the Tucson cost Hyundai and figures that I  negotiate..I'd appreciate it tons!

TOTALLY CONFUSED.

Arming yourself with the MSRP ain't that useful - they'll happily tell you  :P

What you want is invoice cost, and bargain up from that, removing any admin fees from the equation.  PDI, gas and A/C tax, licencing (if new plates) and GST/PST are still line items to be paid.

The easiest method?  Get a pricing report from www.apa.ca and use their buying service.  At $65, it's cheap compared to the cost of the car, and you won't do any better on your own.  www.carcostcanada.com are even less expensive, but I like (and trust) the guys at APA.

In fact, if you are confused and not good with math, just go with the APA.  Seriously.  We could explain how to calculate the monthly payments all day long, but you won't do better than the pre-arranged deal they'll have waiting for you.

You are welcome for the feedback, now just read it carefully.  I already posted cost.

22758, plus 799 freight, 89 metallic paint, 2 dealer council assessment, AC excise tax 100.00.  $23748.00

Quote
Invoice freight included on a metallic colour is about $23800, compared to the MSRP obviously there is little margin here.  About $1100.

Jedda, the website is still priceing '05's, the 4cyl AWD wasn't available in '05.

Look at my post, the MSRP is not indicative of the out the door price.  $25019 with freight and metallic paint.  About $1100 total margin as I stated above.   Plus excise, plus PDI($varies by dealer, we charge $394, includes block heater and carpeted floor mats and tank of fuel.  There is no mark-up in that, that is the direct cost to the sales dept from the service dept). puts you at $25513.00.  Plus lease aquisition fee $350, a charge from Financialinx and outside the dealers' control.  $25863.00.

Now I just ran this through the lease abacus, and the payment based on the above is $338.68 plus tax $389.48 at 15% sales tax.  Plus your drive away cost of $289 plus any dealer admin fee.

This is much less than what you are quoted, so there obviously they are using a number somewhat higher than msrp.  Or included in the quote optional life/disability coverage.  Some dealers add local charges to their cost,  including a "lot pack" or "writedown" which covers lot insurance, damage, and other incidentals.  Adding $600 for such still brings the payment under $350 before tax, about $40 cheaper than your quote (which equals to a mystery $2000 somewhere)

$1100 margin is very reasonable, and the Hyundai's are priced to value.

Hope that helps.

Hey Neil,
I noted the same thing, $440 seemed like a lot of dough over 5 years unless there was some neg. equity roll...I trust that you have provided enough info to the customer, the invoice is $22758 for the 2006 GL 2.0L AWD.  Hence a $1337 margin but the dealer will likely have some deductions out of this number.  There is not a ton of room.  Expecting a maximum $500 off would be a wise negotiating position.

Okay...I just got back from another dealership.
I went in armed with the numbers that were given to me.
I also looked at a 2WD rather than the AWD.
The salesman told me the lease rate was 5%
Base model for the 4 cylinder 5 speed with air was 22374.00
He came back with a lease rate of $395.00/month.
Now considering that I went from an AWD to a 2WD it seemed like a better deal.
I walked away saying I would consider and call back on Monday.

Can someone tell me if a 2WD on the Tucson is okay in winter driving.  No I don't go off roading and no I don't do alot of driving.  From work and back most of the time.  I do however have to climb an escarpment to get to work.

This site has been soo helpful.

Thanks!

Sounds like, as a female, you're getting taken advantage of by the salepeople :-\

Here is the lease breakdown for the AWD Tuscon, which would be much more approiate for our climate...  Otherwise, bo buy a station-wagon and save on fuel.

MSRP of an '06 4cyl AWD:  $24,095
Minus   Dealer Cost: ($22,758)
_______________________
Mark up:    $1,337

A decent deal would be to split the difference with the dealer, so $1,337 / 2 = $668.

So your purchase price would be $24,095 - $668 = $23,437

JEDDAP:  LOOK AT NEILS POST, HE EXPLAINED WHT YOUR MONTH PRICES SHOULD B, GIVEN A "FAIR" DEAL FOR BOTH YOU AND THE DEALER.  PROVIDE THOSE NUMBERS TO A DEALER AND TELL THEM THAT'S WHAT YOU WANT, NOT A PENNY MORE.

Thanks again for the input.

I will definitely call and let the salesman know that the invoice price for the AWD is 22,758 which means a mark up of $1337.
I should be able to get a lease rate of $390.00 with a 5% interest rate.

I do have one more question: What is the drive away cost and the dealer admin fee?

Funny....the salesman said that a 2wd would be more than safe for me to drive during the winter months.  How many of  you would agree with that?

Wow...this forum deserves recognition.  You guys have been more than helpful.  And yes, definitely, being a woman, I was being taken advantage of.

Can I ask why you want a 2wd SUV?  Wouldn't a car wagon offer better value/space/gas mileage than this?

My 6 wgn (not pushing Mazda) offers twice the cargo space, handles better and gets the same gas mileage as the 4cyl Tuscon does.  Mazda has amazing deals on their rates right now on their 2005 stock.
Purchase @ 0% for 48mth or 1.9% for 60 mths or 2.6% for 72 mths.
Lease @ 2.4% for 48mths.
Mazda.ca has a price calculator on their site if you want to use it.

There are other wagons out there also, Mazda3, Vibe, Jetta, Aerio, etc.

As far as winter driving with only 2wd.  Buy snow tires and you should be fine.  You should buy snow tires with AWD also as you do have to stop/turn at some point.  I drove my P5 across the mountains in Colorado in a snow storm and had no problems.
