Make yourself a comparison chart.  Look at performance, comfort, safety, fuel ecomony, realiability, and don't forget to include which vehicle you enjoyed driving the most.  Drive them back to back.  Everyone is different.  Features that I may feel are important you may not.  How badly do you want all wheel drive?  Who has the best borrowing rates?

What are you looking for in a car? Will AWD be useful to you? What is your driving style? Both are excellent cars with their own characters and strengths. Please provide more information and we may be able to help.  :)

Personally, I really like them both.  However, the addition of the side-air-bags to the Subaru, the new nose (that I really like, flame away...) and the AWD carry the day for me in that comparision.  The Mazda has the slickest interior of any <$25K car on the market and overall I think the looks are terrific, save perhaps the almost odd shape of the hatch below the glass.

In theory the Mazda would get better mileage, but I understand in real life they're not that far apart.

My pick is the Subaru.
AWD and new styling.

Is leather seating now available for 2006?

Having had a Subie Impreza 2.5 wagon, I might be inclined to go for the Mazda3; but that's just me. What are your pros and cons on each of them, Mrlost? Make a list of the good/bad on each and then pick the one that suits you best and feels like the one you would like to drive daily. We can't answer your question. Good luck. They are both good choices.

Can't go wrong with either IMO. Both are comparably reliable, but the Mazda feels a tad bit more upscale.

Personally AWD rocks for winter driving. Makes it so much more enjoyable.

The real eye-opener in my Mazda3 testdrive was the tremendous bang from the rear suspension when the 3 went over a moderate bump.  I just could imagine the rattles--both in the car and my teeth--after living with a few years of that.  I was also unimpressed with the 3's cargo space: it's significantly smaller than the Impreza's, and with the seats up, isn't much bigger than the trunk in the Mazda3 sedan.

The big drawback with the Impreza is fuel economy.  If you live in a milder part of Canada, the AWD vs fuel economy tradeoff may not be worth it.  The Subaru stereo is also pretty mediocre, and in general it seemed a noisier car than the Mazda (except when you hit those bumps!!).

You might also take a look at GM's Impreza, the 9-2X.  I don't know if they've still got the big discounts loaded on it, but it was a good bargain in August.

Someone else has finally mentioned one thing I always thought a problem w my '02 Impreza 2.5TS and that is noise. That car was one of the noisiest cars I have every owned. Road noise, tire noise and general harshness were common. Maybe the newer ones have improved but the 02 was a noisey devil.

A couple of other possibilities in the same price range are the Toyota Matrix (built in Ontario) and the new Kia Spectra5. The base-engine Matrix is supposed to get the best mileage of these 4 cars. The Kia has a 5-year warranty (bumper to bumper I believe).

I'm not personally endorsing any of these cars as I have no experience with them, but I've read good things about them all. Like most people here have mentioned, it is up to your personal requirements and all these vehicles are highly rated.

Good luck!

My 04 Impreza OBS was a noisy little devil too!  (same noise level as my old 03 Corolla too) Poor sound insulation, I think.  I felt the difference right away after test driving other cars, and then drive the Impreza back home.

However at idle, the boxer engine is very quiet... quite a big contrast during highway driving.

the 06 RS wagons are quite nice. I like the new look too. Am glad the Alfa-grille works well with the Impreza unlike the Tribeca. There's just too many Mazda3s around although they are quite nice to drive as well and the interior appointments are top notch for the price. Why don't you wait a little, save a little and spring for the new 3-series Touring wagon?

On a related sound deadening note.......

One of my speakers in my door was cutting out in my S2000 (previous owner installed aftermarket ones).  I took the door apart expecting all the usual felt / insulation crap to find NOTHING.  Just plastic on metal with a tiny water barrier of plastic between.  Wow, lightness for sure!

I have driven both and this would indeed be a tough choice for anyone. The Mazda wins hands down in the styling and interior room. The Impreza has better handling and all season ability. I think the Subaru also wins in the reliability department also.

Fuel economy is not a deterrent for me and I will not compromise handling or safety to gain a few $’s per month. I would pick the Subaru.

I bought the 06 Impreza wagon, after I looked at Mazda (3 and 5). I've been been a satisfied Protege owner since 1994.

AWD and side airbags helped decide me, and a bit more usable room in the back of the Impreza with the seats up.

Then there was the dealer.

The Mazda dealer here is of dubious honesty/competence in the service department, in my opinion. They wanted to replace $1800 worth of fuel system when the Mazda failed to start in January. A private garage replaced the plug wires. For less.

The sales guy was right out of the old days. He had to rush back to the sales manager to check on everything we discussed. Hell, son, it's a $20,000 automobile, if you haven't got the authority to make a decision, then let me talk to someone who does. I could never get a delivery date pinned down. In August, it was somewhere between 4 and 6 weeks for the 2005 Mazda3. Maybe. Sort of. And he kept talking about the low financing and monthly payments after I said several times "I'm paying in full. You want a cheque, a certified cheque, or unmarked fifties?". He didn't quite show the little woman the makeup mirror on the back of the sun visor, but that may have been an oversight. All he needed was a Herb Tarlick plaid jacket.

Subaru dealer was laid back, sometimes to the point of unconciousness. They ran out of 05 wagons in August. I checked around and couldn't find any either. He said back then the first 2006 five speed wagon he was getting in would be sometime in October and it would be red. It was, so I bought it. And I didn't need a certified cheque.

So with a whopping 200 kliks under my belt, I can say that the 2006 Impreza wagon is much quieter than a 1994 Protege with 293,000 kliks. We'll see how the servicing goes. And I haven't tried the airbags yet.
