I guess it depends on what volume of car they are interested in producing/selling.
If they can produce 100.000 cars per year, they'll price it at 35-36k. If they can only produce 15.000 cars a year, they'll price it at 40k! It really depends IMO on the volume they want to sell. Toyota is the volume producer, not Lexus.  ???

Saw an AWD 250 on the 404 this morning, burgundy colour.  I think I like the old one a little better, in terms of exterior styling.

They have more important things to do at Lexus/Toyota today - like screw up the pricing on the Yaris site.  ;D ;D

I would shop the IS, but not the Acura TL.  The Lexus has RWD or AWD.  In comparision to the G35, the Lexus will have less power, but I'm sure the interior will put the G35 to shame.  Also, the Lexus reputation still rises far above the Infiniti's.

For me, the shopping list in the $40K-on-the-mark would be:

BMW 323/325.  I'd look at both carefully to see how to get the best value for the car I wanted.

Lexus IS250.  RWD or AWD. Hopefully an AWD version won't cost an arm and a leg. Lexus.  Oddball IS300-ricer styling gone.  Hhhmmm.

Infiniti G35. RWD or AWD.  Big price jump for AWD.  Great driveline, lots of features, still room to improve fit and finish, but pricing is very agressive.

Mercedes C-Class.  Probably still gun-shy on quality, but I'd look anyway for the heck of it.  Massive price jumps with options or AWD.

Subaru (yes, Subaru!) Legacy wagon.  Lots of luxury-type goodies, lots of power (GT models), superb AWD and wagon utility.

Hey John, there is no BMW 323 anymore. Only the 325 and 330 in the current lineup at the moment.

Hmm... I stand corrected.

But I am so sure they didn't have the 323i when the new 3-series was launched... I guess they added it back in.

Yes, you are right, it is a fairly recent addition to the family (the 320d is only available in Europe).
BMW canada just realized they needed a replacement for the 320i, I guess...  ::)

Hi everyone, this is my first post here and I am really interested in the new AWD IS250.  I am actually looking at the A4 Quattro first and foremost, until I saw this car yesterday on an advertisement.

Realistically, which cars should I be looking at for comparison to the A4 Quattro?  It sounds as if this Lexus 250 is one of them as well as the G35(which I love).  What else is out there in this price and feature range?  I also looked at the Suburu Legacy which is a nice AWD but I don't think it is as nice as the Audi.  The 4Motion Passat gets very pricy when adding extras.

Hi Sandy,

Are you looking to get a car with manual transmission?  If you are, then you can count a few cars out.  Namely, the G35x and IS250 AWD are only available with automatic transmission.  You're right, the Audi A4 is a notch above Legacy GT in terms of luxury (and the price), but you'll likely spend less time at the dealers with the Legacy.  Speaking from experience, having owned both Legacy and A4 prevously.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the input.  My wife actually wants an automatic but the Audi dealer told me that the tiptronic type of tranny won't give me what I'm looking for as far as driving fun.  I tend to believe him because he sells both types with the tiptronic likely going to make him a bit more commission.  I may end up with one anyway...

I think the Volvo is just not my style and actually heard that it was made by someone else anyway, not even by Volvo.  I really want the AWD in some flavour and by your replies, it looks as if there are really only a few cars I will realistically be looking at.  I didn't know that the Passat 2.0 didn't come in AWD.  What a shame because I like the car.  The 3 Series BMW doesn't come in AWD either...I also looked at the Acura TL but it is quite expensive and no AWD.  Does Mercedez have an AWD in the 40-50 price range?

IS250
A4 Q
Suburu Legacy
G35 AWD

Thanks for your help.

Sandy

MB has a few 4MATIC (AWD) models. I know for certain they have a C240 4MATIC. They may also have a C320 4MATIC and maybe one or two vehicles in the E-series.

Jaguar has the X-type which is (AWD) in both 2.5 and 3.0  V6 variations. It is much improved from the first problem plagued year for that model.

Mercedes has the C280 4MATIC, which starts at $45,850 for 2006.

On the BMW side, they do indeed have AWD available now in the 3. The cheapest entry is the 325xi AWD at $42,900.

My favourite is still the A4 2.0T if I was in the market for an AWD sedan or wagon in that price range. I've driven the 2006 with tiptronic. It's fast and the transmission suits it well.

Yes it does.  Check bmw.ca as they have the following choices for awd.

2006 325xi sedan
2006 330xi sedan
2006 325xi touring

Edit: Bmorton beat me to it.

Subaru and Audi have the most time-proven AWD systems.  The Subaru is not as nice as any of the luxury brands, but it's price maxes out where the others are just starting.  Also, if you're not picky about the leather and a few other goodies, the Legacy can be had for well under $40K.

I keep my cars for a long time and that fact would scratch the Audi off my list.  They have improved, but the Subaru is far ahead in terms of long term reliability.  The one place Suabru REALLY falls down is in the dealer experience.  They are still providing "Justy" service at modern "near luxury" prices.
