I wish they would import 1.4TSI if its come from Wolfsberg plant. The Twincharger is really the best of both worlds. ;D

I'd like to get the 1.6 FSI... while we're taking votes. ;)

I bought a first year VW model made in Mexico back in 1998.  It is still functioning well.    There is some risk but I am not sure it is as bad as people make it out to be.  I guess somebody gotta buy those first year models otherwise, there won't be a second year.

My 2000 Jetta VR6 was made in Mexico and that car was solid and problem-free. I was really impressed with VW's quality.

I'll be seriously looking at the new Golf next year. Still holding out hope for a 5-door 2.0T, but even the 2.5 will be a big improvement over the current 2.0 lump.

The diesel-powered GTI will be called GTD. The Mk4 Golf didn't have that version, but all the rest did. It's a tradition, similar to GTi. The new GTD will have a 2-liter TDI with 170HP and the torque of a Cummins.

I've also heard of many problems on VW's built in Germany (or the rest of Europe), so the Mexicans are not to blame. The recent years have taken a lot of VW's audience in Europe. people see them as no better than French cars, so they buy the same shitty French cars for less money and with far more appealing designs and with more practicality. The French have been building very original and practical people movers for a decade, the Germans have only started in the recent years and still seem to be a bit comfused.

Regards,
Martin

What about importing the VW Polo into Canada?  I was just in Scotland for two weeks and saw hundreds of them on the roads.  Basically a slightly smaller golf, 1.2 liter engine, cheap and amazing fuel economy.

I wish they would import the Polo to compete in the Yaris/Versa/Fit class, if the price could be made comparable. Occasionally rumours crop up in VW forums about the Polo coming, but it seems like VW can barely give us the Golf so I'm not holding my breath for the Polo.

That's it - GTD! Thanks!

Yeah, I'd love a Polo.

Polo GTI looks great too!

Touran seems to fare well against Scenic in Europe, although its late to the party.

I was in London April 2004 and the new generation VW Golf were on the road. I just don't understand why they don't bring them to North America yet. It is already getting a facelift this year and still we're stuck with the old model.

Scot's version of the Polo, commonly know as the Ewe.  Great traction and heated driver's seat but slow 0-60 and high levels of emissions. ;D

I wish they'd just import the Touran and Polo and be done with it. Passat TDI manuals, Touareg V6 TDI's etc etc etc. Drives me nuts, what they do. Or don't. :-\

We're stuck with the "old" Golf model because VW wants to introduce the Jetta and the Passat without any distractions.

I'm wondering why can't we get the 2.0 TDI (134 hp I think) in the Jetta ... only in the Passat  ???

Can't b/c the outgoing Passat's engine is mounted transversely, vs the other fore and aft way (whatever it's called) like how the Golf's is. The new Passat's engine is mounted in the same direction as Golf.

Plus Passat's chassis is a matrix between A5 and B7, so its AWD is Haldex instead of Torsen.

The older gen Golf was made in Mexico till the 1999.5 redesign, then the cars came from Germany till mid 2001, when they switched to Brazil. Golfs have come from Brazil since then - new Beetles and Jettas come from Mexico. Right now there is a strike at VW Brazil and VW is losing some 10,000 vehicles of production a day there. I believe Polo is also built there, among other models. I don't think the Brazilian currency has been very stable the last while, so it's probably not a great export base at the moment.

The Golf should come from Germany in June '06 as an '07MY with the 2.5 I5 and TDI. The GTI with the 2.0T. It's in the US dealer ordering system that way as it stands. The delay in the Golf importation is partially blamed on the strong Euro, but little while have changed by next year on that front I'll wager. The Golf has grown just like Jetta has, and coming from Europe I bet the gap in price between the two will be even less. I wish I could get a 3dr GTI TDI, or "GDI" as I think they're going to be badged in Europe. Even a TDI GT would be nice.

As far as I knew, the Mexican plant was and is being expanded. Future European market Jetta Wagon/Variants will be built there, along with the North American crossover Jetta Wagon-thingy planned.

I wish they'd just import the Touran and Polo and be done with it. Passat TDI manuals, Touareg V6 TDI's etc etc etc. Drives me nuts, what they do. Or don't. :-\

Actually SirA Brazil lost the Golf to Mexico because they are supplying lots of markets with the new VW Fox (including the european one) and the new pick up truck (believe me or not) from VW will be done there.

Hmmmm... could be. Will have to investigate. Seems strange tho, as moving production from Brazil and retooling in Mexico to build the old style just for North America would be illogical. But wouldn't surprise me. Will have to investigate  :)

In VAG's own quality/efficiency rating, Mexico rated ahead of Brazil. AFAIK.
