Another tire size question 195/75/14 to 195/70/14
« on: September 30, 2005, 04:41:01 pm »
Looking at the Nokian WR's.

My current size is 195/75/14 (producing an overall diameter of 25.52")

The closest size (I think - unless someone can point me to another size) they have to this are the 195/70/14's (diameter of 24.75").  The difference is a little over 3/4 of an inch (.77") smaller producing an acutal speed of 97km/hr at a speedo reading of 100km/hr (or 126km/hr at a reading of 130km/hr).

Is it ok to go with these? (namely if I dont care about the speedo reading discrepency what other issues/problems will I have if I go to these tires for example will they physically fit on my original rims, etc)

Many Thanks

I would get 205/70-14 if available.

Difference in diameter would be a fraction from stock.

I believe the largest 14" they have is the 195/70/14

I didnt notice any 205's in a 14"

You are fine with the 195/70R14 on your Ciera. The car appears to have come with 185/75/14 originally, so the 195/70R14 is actually the perfect subsitute. Very close to the original stock overall diameter.

Thanks for the reply

However, there were two tire sizes used on that car in 1996.  I think if you got the aluminium rims the size of tire was 195/75/14 with steel wheels it would have been as you said.

So the question still remains, will be ok to go with the different sized tires (difference in diamter of 3/4")?  The only problems I will have is the speedo discrepency correct?

Thanks

A rule of thumb is plus or minus 3% for the overall tire diameter. 3/4"/25.5" is about 3%.

Ideally you should go with the OE 195/75/14. However, if the tire you must have only comes in the 195/70/14, you should be fine. It is a small difference, but in this case I think it is within or close to the spec.
