DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group will use a transmission created by Nissan Motor Co. and a diesel engine supplied by Volkswagen AG in a new Dodge car, as part of efforts to cut the time and cost of vehicle development.

The 2007 Dodge Caliber, set to debut next year, will be available with a so-called continuously variable transmission developed by Nissan's Jatco Ltd. unit and a diesel engine for outside of the United States from Volkswagen, Chrysler engineering chief Eric Ridenour said last week. The car will use an all-wheel drive system developed with Mitsubishi Motors Corp., he said.

Oh, that's a good one:  It's a Dodge Nissan Volkswagen Mitsubishi, made by DaimlerChrylser.

It reminds me of my favorite truck:  shortly after Volvo bought GMC trucks, I was at a trade show.  Parked next to us was a truck, and the badges on it were:

Volvo/White-GMC Autocar.
My diesel car self-identifies as an electric vehicle.

i find it hard to believe that DC will borrow a diesel engine from VW...they dont need it...they already produce a couple of good diesel engines in Europe...
I think this information is wrong, but we will have to wait and see.

Add Hyundai in there too, as the gas engine is a Chrysler/Mitsu/Hyundai designed unit.

But it looks mighty good!

I think DC's diesels in Europe weren't as advanced or clean-burning as VW's.

http://www.allpar.com/cars/dodge/caliber.html

Engine HP Lb-Ft Nm
1.8 liter 140 125 169
2.0 liter 150 140 190
2.4 liter 170 165 224
2.4 turbocharged 235? ? ?
2.0 VW diesel 134 229 310

The 2.0-liter engine is a direct-injection turbo diesel with high-pressure fuel injection, a variable geometry turbocharger, and four valves per cylinder. The injectors are electronically controlled, allowing precise management of each combustion cycle. This system can operate at pressures up to 2000 bar, leading to finer atomization of fuel, high power and torque, and better fuel efficiency.

They might, remember the Omni and Horizon from the late 70's that chrysler produced. The first ones were powered by vw engines similar to what the Rabbit used.

From what I read.
The reason DCX went to VW 2.0L TD direct injection over MB 2.0L crd is volume. MB was unable to meet volume requirements.
I was hoping it was because VW sells the passat with the 2.0L TD in the US market. Then that would allow dodge and jeep to use the VW motor in US market too. But so far there is no plans in bringing the diesel to US market. Even though the motor will be put in the vehical in the US and shiped over seas.
Plus now that DCX is using VW motor. They will allow VW to use the caravan / voyager/ town & country platform for a VW mini van sold in the US market.

Volume was the concern. MB couldn't meet demand by chrysler. VW did.
So I've read.

VW is dumping the whole TDI technology ... trying to sell it to somebody else?

As far as I know. Diesels with a four-port radial injection pump, driven off the timing belt, to achieve the 20,000 PSI or so needed for directly injecting fuel into the cylinder will change to the common rail design. Most likely chrysler/dodge/jeep will get the new CRD motor.

I think VW is changing thier diesel motors because of chrysler. Going from belt driven pump to common rail design.
