These engines look awesome. Can't wait for seeing them in the new civic.

Yeah, as an engine maker Honda seems to have really capitalized on that strength.

Greater power and efficiency to an already excellent combination will mean a lot in this market.

Honda is probably the best engine builder in the world.

I wonder if the new EL will get that engine as well...

140 hp puts this new Honda motor right in the mix as far as competition and their base motors in compact cars...

I think the fuel economy is more noteworthy than the power.

People will go "it gets 55mpg??? " and THEN say "and it even has power". Wholly shiznaught, can't beat that.

In my experience people seem to look at horsepower before fuel ratings though, if they even notice the MPG rating at all.

However, you are right, the compact car segment generally has the fuel economy feature going for them. This new VTEC looks great.

Bullit, I highly doubt all those Civic buyers care about horsepower before MPG rating and reliability... if they did, they wouldn't buy all those Civics!!

I hope they put a little more efforts in making the new Civic quieter... it's really a pain to drive a Civic on the highway with the engine buzzing constantly, it's a lot louder than a Corolla...

I never said that they put reliability after horsepower, nor did I say that civic buyers put horsepower above MPG's. I said "people", as in the general public do so when looking at cars, compact cars included.

Why would honda up the horsepower in the new 2006 civic if civic buyers didn't care about horsepower? To keep up with the industry demand of course. And what is the industry demand? Yup, you guessed it, more horsepower.

And all this time I thought people just bought Honda's because, well they are Hondas.  I really don't think many even know or care how many hp or mpg the car gets.

Whether someone has a Sunfire or a Venture van or an Aveo or Civic, people tend to say "and it's good on gas". I'd say an Aveo is poor on gas compared to an Echo, or a Sunfire to a Civic, but doesn't seem to matter.

I think the i-VTEC will be an either-or thing. Either exceptional mileage, or that 140hp. It's a good compromise tho, as the power (hopefully with more torque than the current engine) will be there when you need it, and hopefully it's a good car dynamically to make the most of the drive, while when cruising it'll get insanely good mileage.

People DO tend to buy Hondas and Toyotas because they are just that, but in this case there's even more substance and reason to.

This Civic will be somethin' else I tell ya.

Those ppl I know own a Civic usually talk more about fuel economy over horsepower rating. It seems to be those who drive Nissan/Infiniti have more bragging rights when talking about hp.

Wish Honda would offer an option to those of us who have zero interest in owning anything with a trunk. So far all I've seen indicates that we're still just getting the sedan and coupe for 2006. Perhaps they feel the Civic sells well enough now without a five-door in the lineup so why bother adding one, but I was sure they'd answer the Matrix & 3 Sport with a Civic hatch.

Honda should be evaluating whether to bring us the next Stream, which is larger than current JDM one. This ppl mover would become the "hatch" on Civic platform.

If you had to 'decide between Jetta', you'd also see that its a completely different market, homie.
