2006 BMW 330i Test Drive
« on: July 01, 2005, 09:12:06 am »
I just spent 3 days in a new 330 sedan while my X3 was in having an iPod system installed and a scratched door trim piece replaced under warranty.  They had previously agreed to loan me a 325 for the day but when I arrived they couldn't find the 325 loaner car so the Service Manager got pissed off and took the only 330 demo from the sales department and gave it to me.  They thought the two jobs on my X3 would only take the day, but over 12 hours of shop time on the iPod job alone (no, I didn't have to pay for any of the labour, thank God!)

The silver 330 with black leather and six speed auto is a beautiful car.  It looks a lot like a new 5 series to me and that is a good thing.  I haven't seen more than a handful of them on the road and boy does it ever attract attention.  I had a lot of swivel heads checking it out and people asking me about it in parking lots and gas stations.

I found the car to be extremely fast.  Off the line using the tiptronic, first gear is very low and hits redline in about two or three seconds forcing an automatic shift to second.  From there the needle on the speedometer moves up to highly illegal speeds very very quickly.  It took about 20 minutes for me to even realize that there was a sixth gear because in fifth you can cruise at 120-140 with the revs about 3000.  When you are at 120 and nail the gas, the speed still climbs very fast and I could sense the OPP waiting for me so had to be very careful.

There is solid acceleration in every gear and on the highway in sixth you still feel a surge and can pass without downshifting.  The transmission is extremely smooth and unless you have it floored you really can't feel the shifts.

Handling is excellent.  Very balanced and great feel through the steering wheel.  You can push this car through turns and never feel near the limits.  I took a couple of on and off ramps at over 100 and felt totally composed.  The ride is very firm and in a construction zone over some major breaks in pavement the suspension bottomed in a harsh manner.  Apparently the run-flat tires are criticized for being too hard.  The brakes are very powerful and precise, solid pedal feel and absolutely no fade.

The seats are very very comfortable and supportive and my 6'3" 250 lb beefy frame fit in there without feeling like I needed to visit Jenny Craig.  This model did not have the sport seats so there could have been more bolstering for the corners.  I love the four way lumbar support that you can adjust up and down as well as in and out.  The turn signals took some getting used to.  One light touch give you three blinks for a lane change and then shuts off.  But press a little harder and they stay on.  To shut them off you acutally press again in the same direction and a few times I was turning and struggling with them to shut them off.

You have to love the push button starter, at least at first.  After three days the novelty wore off and I would just as easily prefer a normal key.  The stereo is good and I liked being able to skip through all 18 presets using the steering wheel controls rather than just six at a time on my car.  I did feel the sound was not as good as the X3.  The sunroof feels tiny compared to the X3 and doesn't have an electric sunshade.

Overall I would highly reccommend this car.  If they had a 330 with all wheel drive I think it would be the perfect Canadian sport sedan.  I put about 400 kms on over three days so got really used to it.  When I picked up my X3 yesterday I had to compare it and would say the following.  The X3 is slower and could benefit from the extra 30 hp in the new 3 liter six.  I prefer the seating position in the X3.  The stereo sounds much better in the X3.  The 330 sedan would win in a beauty contest for sure, it's a hot looking sedan.  My new iPod system is awesome and I can control the main functions through the steering wheel controls while the iPod remains in the glovebox, hardwired to the stereo.

Now if only I could afford both... the X3 for winter and the 330, maybe a coupe, for the summer... mmmmmmmmm.

Good write up FW.  I too am a little surprised that there aren't a few more of these new 3's out on the streets.  Perhaps the dealer doesn't have much?

FW I have a 330xi (e46) and it is the perfect 12 month sports sedan for Canada...

The new 330xi  with the X3 powertrain and the new engine is supposedly out this fall. I will go and try one as soon as the dealer has one!

I haven't seen a new 3 on the street yet

I've seen a handful.

As for the 330xi being the perfect 12 month sports sedan.  Pretty much.  BMW had the year round sports sedan figured out long ago.  I was looking for an E30 325ix for the longest time.  Hard to find one even up for sale.  There's a guy who drives a white 325ix to work on the same street as I do...asked him one day in traffic if he'd sell.  He looked at me and said "I'll sell my car when I can no longer repair it."

A colleague has the g35X and apart from the automatic only.... its pretty good and then there is the WRX or WRX sti.

The 530ix is now available.

The rest are not "sports" sedans ( E class mb etc)

Were they wiring it so you have the ability to control it using the steering wheel buttons?

A 330i starts at $47K.  Load it up and it'll push $60.  I built one on their site and checking most options (no auto), the 330i was 61K.

Yeah I'm also curious about how the iPod was covered under warranty. And also how a scratch on a door could be covered under warranty.

Anyway, great review. The 3 series has always been one of my favourites and I especially like the 06's. IT must've been a blast to drive. Thanks for sharing.

i dunno. missus and i were in bmw mississauga to inquire on the last remaining 325i EE. But they don't have a manual. the salesman proceeded suggest what about the 325i e90. and took us on a drive. I didn't find the interior any nicer than the 46. In fact I thought the it was a bid drab.
The exterior takes a while to get used to but I have a feeling it will date the e46. Thought I'd share. But it's a 325i so not sure ho the 330i would be...
I've seen a few of the new models over the past week now.

a lot of cars in europe are fitted with a push button starter, its all the rage, some you don't even have to take the key of of your pocket.

FW - thanks for the report - well done. Must have made the sales ppl mad to lose their only 330 demo for 3 days - yikes!!

IMO the both the present and the new'06 3 Series are some of the nicest sedans ever built by BMW. Interestingly, we haven't had a BMW dealer here for over 12 years but there are many 3 series BMWs around. A new BMW/Mini shop is under construction and should open this summer. I'm sure they'll do well in this area.

The ipod is now hard wired to the stereo so I can select which playlist I want and move through the track without touching the ipod itself.  It also charges the ipod while connected.  The cable is inside the glove box so the ipod can remain safely hidden and locked in the car.  I had to order a conversion kit from a company called Dension in the US for about $330 Canadian including delivery and duty.  The reason I didn't have to pay for labour was because when I bought the X3 I paid about $300 for the BMW ipod connection which ultimately didn't work due to the premium stereo I have.  So they credited me the $262 back to my visa and did the install for free.  Had they know how long it would take for their tech to figure it out I'm sure they would have just said forget it!

The (tiny) scratch on the door trim was there when I took delivery of the vehicle in March.  Good thing I did a very close inspection before leaving the dealership.  They had to order a replacement part from Germany which took two months.

My buddy has an ipod with a wireless connection that allows you to listen to his 2300 songs while the radio is on 87.9.  It has a range of about 60 feet.  Is similar to what you have? It sounds like you have a cradle etc....

Those FM transmitters suck to be honest.  Tried one in two separate vehicles and the sound is like listening to a clock radio on full blast.  Hence the need to wire right into the back of the stereo where the CD changer would plug in.

Great review of the 3 series.  Thanks for sharing.
