Great review JB, I love all the pics too!!

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

James,

Excellent review.  Though when a friend and I test drove the CTS we both thought the car was merely "ok" for the money they were asking for it, and the interior we felt was downright cheap.  This is a car tagged at almost $50K, but is nowhere near that in quality, or most any other regard. Even at $30K used it's pushing it. Maybe you like it so much because a Canadian was program manager for this car??

On GMcanada.com it reads that unleaded regular is the recommended fuel.
I know on the STS on models from 2000 regular is recommened.

Oh well, no big deal, I figured it might be as the fuel door did not mention premium as I thought it might.
Although where did you find it?  Are my searching techniques out of date?  I only can see the 3.6L for the new cars listed.

Rrocket, I did not know that information, for me it just seemed like for $30k these days you are going to get NOTHING like this car.  Yes the interior is a tad on the plastic side, but heck I was quoted $20k for an echo with only A/C and cruise.  This car is light years ahead of an echo.

Like I said for $55k no way, but at $30k it's a steal IMO.  Looking at the option packages and specs it seems this car has every option availabe minus the automatic transmission.  Really a nice package.

Drive UPDATE
This morning it was rather cold, I hopped in and turned the bun warmers to hi, the heater didn't kick in until the car warmed up but the bun warmer did a nice job to keep me warm in the interim.  The clutch felt funny this morning, is it oil driven?  It was slow to release which was very odd.

Look at that big dangling wire coming from the trunk door... No telescopic?? And why no fuel door release like pretty much every other upscale cars on the market?? Oh and the cheap plastic interior... All of that in a 55k$ car, wheeee! Good ol' GM...

btw, good review James...

Hey Jamesbe...how do you do it?  I love playing with cars and taking them for test drives.  But I figure they can see right through me, especially since my car is only 3 months old.  Do they know that you are not actually in the market for a new car?  What do you tell them that makes them let you have a car for a weekend???

Well the salesman's exact word were:

"If you are interested you can take it for the weekend"

What I'm sure he meant was "If you are interested in purchasing the car, you can take it for the weekend."

But that's not EXACTLY what he said now is it?  Of course I would be interested in driving the car for the weekend

Shnak, what's wrong with the wire in the trunk?  The way the trunk is made (no hinges taking up room inside the trunk) I don't think they had any other choice.  There is a brake light and reversing lights built into the trunk, power has to get there somehow.  They did finish the trunk with a liner, which I can't say for Mercedes!

Sure but the power wire could've been hidden in the metal arm! Or at the very least, it could be attached to the metal arm! Like it is right now, it looks as though they just thought about the wire after everything was designed and had to put the wire somewhere!

I'm sorry but your level of expectations (fit&finish and details, not performance) of a car are way below what I expect...

That's pretty nit picky, they probably put it there so that the wires wouldn't get damaged by the hydraulic arm while shutting.  Kind of a VERY small detail, I never noticed till you pointed it out.

Like I said a few times, if I was buying this car new I would dismiss it immediately due to the interior plastics, but what can you get for $30k these days?  Not much really.

well if it was 30k$ new, sure that's a great deal... but a 2 year old without much warranty, 30k$ is still a lot of money!! Unless the dealership tacked on extra warranty on it?

No need for a test drive... Just sitting in it like I did in a few auto show is enough for me.

Details details details. It's all in the details for me.

You laugh Mrthompson, but without a telescopic wheel, I'm pretty sure I remember not fitting that well in it. Anyways, I didn't intend in threadjacking, I said what I wanted to say, so I'll stop contributing to it.

"Other interior appointments? Well rear seats that sit 5 fairly comfortably, 60/40 split"

Good gravy!  That's a huge-ass rear-seat!  I didn't think they were that big since the Brougham days like Barrie's.  :-)

Nice review, James.  I've placed my vote too.  The new CTS's appear to be a good lease deal right now -- finally they're getting competitive.  As Snowy and Bridge have said, your validation of this car has shed a whole new light on it.  Plus, after drooling over the CTS-V at the show a few weeks ago, I've almost gotten over the nasty origami styling.  400 hp would certainly make me forget the plasticky interior.

Shnak, you wrote, "And why no fuel door release like pretty much every other upscale cars on the market?" -- my Audi doesn't.  It's the same as James described on the Caddy.  Go out, push on one side of the fuel filler door and voila, it swings open.  Why do I need an extra mechanical system to do that for me?  It locks when the car is locked.

Oh, one last thing James... stop spending so much time test-driving and take down yer friggin' Christmas lights!!!  :-)
