Ontario laws vs. B.C.
« on: February 11, 2005, 04:16:21 am »
I am thinking of buying a used car (Subaru  Forester) in B.C from a dealer that had bought it at auction in Ontario (apparently ex-lease).  I know from reading other links that certain vehicles are cheaper used in the East, and it can be good economy for Western dealers to purchase out East and then flip out here in the West. I checked out this specific vehicle on Carfax and everything is O.K. there. However, I have heard that in Ontario if a vehicle is in an accident over $2000 it doesn't have to be reported to the Dept. of Motor Vehicles as required here in B.C. Can anyone shed any light on this matter for me? I Do not want to buy a vehicle that has possibly been in an  accident out East  and was brought out West to help clear its history.
Thanks!

Any car you go to buy used needs to be thoroughly examined regardless of where it comes from.

Interesting though that this dealer goes all the way to Ontario for a car, ships it out there and can still turn a good buck. Wonder what that says about our market here?

Anyway you want to have it fully examined for your own piece of mind. As for the legal question you raised I'm not sure about an answer for that but I suspect others will help.

Technically, any motor vehicle accident over $1000. must be reported to the police or their reporting centre.  That info goes to the insurance industry.  It is not reported to the Ontario government.  The question is whether or not Carfax taps into the insurance companies' database.  I don't know.

When a vehicle is sold or bought in Ontario an info package must be purchased from the Ontario government and it lists previous owners and liens but not reported accident claims.

I would STAY away from any car from the east. True, you don't see the body rust like you used to see on cars from the east. But it's the rust you cannot see that is a problem. Steel brake lines, strut towers, all the nooks and crannys on the chassis. The rotors and brake drums take it hard too as do the linings, exhaust systems, engine brackets.
Enjoying the Alberta advantage

Jamie we do maintain our Cars here in Ont and The odd bit of Salt gets washed off. We do not purposely abuse our vehicles and should not be slagged because of a little bit of salt on them on occasion. Our SalesMarket is larger here then out West so the prices are less. Dealers need good cars from anywhere so they can stay in business and make a profit as well. Its not as much Salt as you think with the City Halls cutting back on everything including Snow removal and salting of the Roads. We are having much milder Winters in the last few years so the Salt problem is almost non-existent nowadays.

I would not agree with Jamie not to buy a car from central/eastern Canada. It's all a matter of proper winter maintenance and the days of the "fast rusting Fords" of the late 70s/early 80s are gone. Just be sure the vehicle had good maintenance done. Prices are cheaper in central Canada and sometimes a good deal can be snagged.

Strange how the Japanese Steel makers sold all of this crap steel to our Car makers in the 70's and 80's and then after damageing our Big 3 they bring in their so-called cars of quality right behind all of this Rotten Steel from them. Their products should have been banned from our shores then until they covered all of the damages they caused.  To Me the Buying Public fell for this Scam Hook Line and Sinker.

Strange how the "big 3" built such awful, poorly designed crap in the 1970s.  I don't understand why they weren't outlawed.  To me, the buying public fell for it hook line and sinker.  Terrible cars, poorly built, and badly engineered.

Barrie1,I'm not saying that cars from the east are not taken care of. The bodys will look as good as any car today. Its the rust the average person cannot see. The stuff under the car is where the damage is happening. I see this EVERYDAY. I can spot a car from ont a mile away.

Jamie you must be part Bird to spot a Ont Car a mile away. Is it the Ont Feathers that give it away?

Road salt in the snow belt parts of Ontario is in use as never before.  In my county, just a threat of a snow flake will bring out the salters.  In my thriving metropolis the trucks plow the snow as they spread the salt.  Eventually, they end up plowing salt.

I agree with Jamie; to all you in BC, don't buy imported used dealer cars from Ontario.  Mostly off lease, non maintenanced units with road salt nicley penetrated into interior body seems.
