Help me understand - New vs Semi used mazda3 ?
« on: January 24, 2005, 10:49:40 pm »
I am reading  up on this and im a bit baffled.... here is an add from a mazda dealer aboout a mazda 3 sport with 25k

Year: 2004
Make: MAZDA
Model: MAZDA 3
Model Detail: SPORT
Price: $22,995.00
Mileage: 25000 km
Ad Code: CNLLCQ
Date: 1/24/2005
Features: Grey, 5 spd., air, power group, CD, keyless, 17" alloys, p/roof, bal. of fact. warr., 25,000 km.

Now if I goto the mazda web site... and i pricec a 2005 with AIR its 22.485.

I do realize you might save some on freight air pdi ? dealer costs.. but why would i buy a used car with 25k on it when i can get a brand new one for 500 less if all the options are basically the same....

Just wondering

In either case, are you planning on paying the asking price? If you are then no, it wouldn't make much sense to pay more for a used one.

Err no... im just wondering why a dealer would post a car like that when the offical site lists how much 2005 are... just trying to understand the logic behind it all...

I'm very nervous about being suckered :-)

Shol Welcome to the Forum, I don't think you will be Suckered as you are smart enough to come here and ask for advice. Good for You catching the dealers little trick there. I would not even consider that vehicle as you already know there's a problem with the price on it. . Some buyers may not catch the ploy but you did. Are all the options the very same or only close? There has to be a reason for it to be that high.

It's done because people like to "win" when they buy. The high starting price lets the buyer negotiate a big discount which lets them feel great about themselves.

Geez... nice trick by the dealer.  The high used car price on that car probably helps to sell new ones.  Either that or it's laden with a few grand worth of options -- either way, I'd be looking at a new one.  Good catch -- it sure pays to be an observant consumer!

$23,285: Sport ($21,485) plus Air ($1,000) and Roof ($800).

But yes seems a little ridiculous.

Mazda3's aren't being discounted much at all, and after seeing dealer invoice there's really precious little to play with.

You gotta pay $800 extra for the roof?  That is ridiculous.

Hey thanks for the responses..

The dealer called me because I asked that question myself....The *only* difference is the car has a sun roof, and the price i said (22485) would be a brand new 2005 with no roof.

i still dont get paying 500 more for a used car 2004, that has 25k on it, one year less of a warranty, to get a sunroof lol...

And I think you guys are 100% right, when he called me his attitude in the message was "Well we can talk about what is right for you to pay and blah blah blah blah"

I guess just how it was approached makes me apprehensive... blehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....

still deciding go for a new car like a toyota echo or spend more... I kind of love the mazda  but not sure if i wanna spend all that much on a car when I get cna one so cheap :-) hehe..

Well, best of luck Shol and if there's anything else we can do, that's what the forum is here for (well that and making fun of people too, ha ha).

Cheers!

Can someone explain the passion for sunroofs?  I don't find them useful at all.  Mine came with one, but I rarely use it.

What could YOU sell it for on your own?  If you could get $23K in the used market, then it's not a bad buy.  What if you could only get $17,000?  Then you'd pay $23K and have an asset worth $17K.  Bad move.

At the same price as a new one, no one will buy it.  They'll buy new.  If you advertised it privately for $23K, I doubt many calls would come in.

Now, at $16-17K, you'd probably be able to move it.  Seriously, I'd ignore the asking price and offer them $16,000.  If I couldn't get it for close to $17K, I'd probably forget it.

When we looked at Foresters, most were aksing $17-19K with some private sellers in the $15-16K range.  The Subaru dealer had a higher mileage one with stained upholstery asking $22K.  If I paid that $22K, I'd be upside down right off.  I'd have just shelled out $22K for a car I could get maybe $16K for.  What's the point of buying used if it depreciates as you put the plate on?

I love having it in the Benz, in the spring and fall.  When the temp is above zero and the sun is shining, but it's not hot, the fresh air coming from the open roof is awesome.  With most new cars having aerodynmaic properties that create severe buffering when a window is open, it is a great way to get fresh air without having everyone blown and buffeted by an open window.

I also use the tilt feature when it's hot to help let hot air out of the cabin when first driving.

My car has a feature from the remote where I can open all the windows and sliding roof as I walk up to the car.  Having the roof open helps vent the car even faster.  (My car is black/black)

It will limit your top speed if it's open.  Tested and verified by me.  Fun.

I agree as I have this option in my Old Seville and love this Toy to Drive with. I do the same trick with the air conditioning and find this to be the most relaxing drive there is for temperature and pleasure.

I was in a ’87 Mustang that ended up on its roof that had a sunroof. I had 200 stitches in my scalp form the glass….I don’t like sun roofs.

Sunroofs are very useful in older cars when the AC goes for a final dive and you have all that extra capacity for ventilation.

Ouch, Snowy.  So... I guess that explains the bright orange cap, then?    Wasn't even hunting season, now, WAS IT?  (Kidding.)

As for venting - that's what power windows, front and back, are for.

I opened my sunroof once, in the old Audi, on the highway.  Ended up with a lit cigarette butt from an 18-wheeler landing on the leather inside my car.  Never opened it again.

I used to like the tilt feature on roofs a bit;  but must admit last few vehicles that had them, never used the sunroof at all. I won't pay extra for it, in fact, it can cut down on your headroom so I usually avoid them now (and I'm not tall like the Jolly Green _____).
