AN elderly motorist driving along a 130km/h expressway in eastern France caused a crash when he followed the advice of his onboard GPS computer - and made a U-turn.

Police said the hapless 78-year-old driver, who was not named, and the occupants of the vehicle he ran into escaped unharmed from the collision on Sunday, but it could have been much worse.

The man told officers his car GPS had told him to "make a U-turn immediately" as he drove along lost near the town of Nancy in search of a hotel.

He did so, not realising the limitations of his satellite navigation device, which guides using verbal directions.

"It's not the first time we've had a GPS incident," one of the officers said, recalling the time a police vehicle found itself face-to-face with a motorist going the wrong way in accordance with his computer's instructions. "

My system says "If possible, make a U-turn."  I can see it being an issue....especially with people who do not read the disclaimer screen on startup.

Hahaha, mine says that as well.  "Make a U-Turn when possible"  Of course you can also uncheck the U-Turn option so it avoids it, this can be a pain though as if there is no other way you may be forced to drive a long distance before doing a series of right turns.

'Cept here the reference is to the 3 digit phone number to get to police/fire/ambulance in a hurry, not the anachronisticaly styled sportscar.

Your suggestion is good but it'll just get MDX all riled up.

A man in his late 70's...probably not too involved with technology most of his life...now his car talks to him.  Must be a freaky thing to experience.  The automakers have their arse covered, everytime my car starts up, I have to physically press the OK button to agree to their terms and conditions...thereby releasing Acura of any liability.
